I like Mad Max and I hate political discussions (though as the guy in Beamer's video pointed out EVERYTHING is about politics) so I didn't respond to the Hillary conspiracy. It seems like the same far right paranoia that my wife subscribes to, so I am used to kind of ignoring it in the name of harmony.

Now if he ever gets as bad as RollinThunder... Stunned

Some other problems I see are really bad reasoning based more on emotion than actual facts, and the hair-trigger need to go ballistic on people who don't agree with the speaker.

Despite what you think I feel about Anita Sarkeesian I was a little annoyed at her videos but otherwise largely indifferent. I agreed with her sentiment - that there are tropes with women in videogames - but only in the same way that there are tropes in RPG's like convenient amnesia and in shooters like the "take all of the players weapons away" level and the like. I just couldn't go with her on any of her examples or the conclusions she drew from them though because they were all so wrong and taken completely out of context. Dishonestly so. That was the extent of my feelings on the matter. It was only when the media began taking her cause as their own to forcefully make games conform to a prohibitively narrow extremist standard that I started pointing out how wrong she is. She became the face of their indidious agenda. I really have nothing personal against her and was content just to agree to disagree until that happened.

Facebook reveals all. Poor Jets.

If you blow the map up several orders of magnitude you see a tiny green dot for the Jets. That's Verno. Biggrin

It's looking at gamergate as an example of narrative. The inflammatory part, which he says mostly in passing, is that gamergate is the reaction of a majority to the introduction of the minority voice to culture as a whole, and that it isn't limited to video games.

And while that may part of Gamergate (though who can say for sure? So many assumptions...) it isn't why I oppose the militant feminist movement, perpetuated by a media grossly lacking in integrity and ethics, in gaming. I love when games (and people) come along and challenge the status quo and present exciting new ideas. To say that gamers by and large are happy with the status quo is very disingenuous considering how they are always looking for new expericences and the vast mjority don't care if their favorite game has princesses needing rescuing or strong badass female characters -they just want an awesome gaming experince. Present them with something new, and if it is good they embrace it. If it sucks, they ignore it or trash it. So many people are over-thinking this; gamers are decent people by and large and are okay with new things. Stop trying to say that opposition to militant feminism in gaming is because of a basic 'boy's club' paradigm, because it is BS. That has NOTHING to do with it. Minority voices have always been welcome in gaming since I have been a gamer. It is the condescending activist voice who demands that an entire culture be changed to suit their dubious standards (and alternate viewpoints be damned) that gamers by and large are against.

But for the first time maybe in my life, on that Saturday afternoon, I walked towards that pair of gamers and I didn’t smile. I didn’t say hello. In fact, I crossed the street so I wouldn’t walk by them. Because after all the years of gamer love and inclusiveness, something had changed in me. A small voice of doubt in my brain now suspected that those guys and I might not be comrades after all. That they might not greet me with reflected friendliness, but contempt.

This section really bothered me. It's like saying that some black guys held up a gas station so now I'm afraid of black people. It seemed so ignorant. But in the context of the whole editorial it becomes apparent that she is not happy at herself for having this reaction, and indeed seems to know it is the wrong attitiude to have. It seems almost like she is thinking out loud, lamenting the change in her attitiude that should not have happened.

Honestly the negative attitudes about John Riccitiello largely come from gamers who know basically zero about business or what a CEO even does.

I can't speak for the majority of gamers but the reason I disliked him as CEO is because of how bad the entire company was under him. If it was just the odd bad game from EA there would be little to criticize him for; under his reign EA was notorious for treating paying customers like dirt and consistently ruining great franchises and great studios. That is a direct reflection of who was at the helm at that time imo.

A 7.9 is a perfectly respectable score. It would not at all deter me from buying a game I was interested in. I'm more inclined to read a review when the score is around 7.5 to 8 anyway.

I also very much like that Ars links to a "refute" against the accusation of inethical behavior, and said "refute" is simply an editorial by one guy (an employee of Ars) who is on the GameJournoPro (or what the fuck ever) saying "it's not all of us just deciding what to write on!"

That is what struck me as well. Funny they didn't post "recently rebutted Anna Sarkeesian" videos with a link to Thunderfoot's video editorial. Ars' coverage of this issue has been so slanted that I'm surprised their words stay on the screen.

I bought it for $7.50 on a sale a while back, and I regret it. I barely got past the tutorial. Absolutely brutal, punishing game. I know there are people who will say things like "it really isn't that hard" but don't listen to them. It is ridiculous. I am glad there are people out there who enjoy it but unless you possess nearly inhuman reflexes, skill, and patience this masochistic game will only bring you pain.

Well...I'm going out on a limb here - did you try to beat that first BIIIG Boss, Asylum Demon? Yeah, me too. Until I realized that you don't need to - and aren't even supposed to on your first try.

Oh yeah, I spent a good hour trying to kill him the first go round before I figured out you were supposed to run past him, do some stuff, then jump on his back. That second part took another hour, until I wasn't sure that I wasn't supposed to run past him again! When I finally did kill him, the realization set in that it just took me 2 and a half hours to play through what amounts to the tutorial. UGH!!!!

When I got to that island I made the mistake of attacking the dude there, who just kept killing me and killing me. I'd spawn, and BAM! he'd be on me and I'd be dead. I tried apologizing but he wouldn't have it. I finally restarted, got all the way back there, then got my ass handed to me several dozen times by skeletons. I finally just quit, humbled and discouraged.

Handled correctly I think this game can actually be a decent social commentary. I doubt the developers will utilize that sort of nuance, but even then, could it just be a guilty pleasure that lets people harmlessly blow off some steam after a shitty day. I'm not sure I see anything wrong with that.

I've always thought Facebook needed a "STFU" button. And maybe a "Quit Your Friggin' Whining" button. And while I'm at it, how about a "No One Cares Narcissus" button.

Is it an attempt to cash in on the 'tropes vs women' popularity??

DING DING DING!!!

I don't have problem in the world with it; but the concept seems forced. Maybe the in the actual context of the game it will feel more natural.

EXACTLY. Thank you. While everyone is trying to pinpoint complex reasons for why there are fewer women coders than men, the obvious just seems to elude them.

Well yeah, but I don't know if you're characterizing the Pinsof thing accurately there...

Neither do I but it sure smells fishy. I am not sure a court would look on what he did very lightly at all.

It's pretty naive to think that journalists in any field don't communicate with each other though. It's no different with games. Journalists don't care if their corporations are competing, they are still colleagues on an individual level. You don't think all those journalists who sit together at press conferences aren't getting drinks later on and discussing their work?

This naivety about how journalists actually do their jobs is probably one of the reasons why mainstream coverage of gamergate is dismissive of it.

There are a few journalist bars in NYC. After 5 its all newspaper reporters. Yes, they discuss work. The crews in Ferguson all meet for drinks near their hotels and do the same.

Of course they all discuss work - it's what they all share in common. The same way I can discuss my military service with other veterans. That doesn't mean there aren't forbidden interactions I need to avoid considering I had a Secret clearance and many people I talk about my service with do not. Journalists are very aware that there are unethical interactions they can be having with their colleagues.

If it were found that journos from USAToday, CNN, MSNBC, and other mainstream media outlest were colluding about which stories to run and which to ignore, as well as which journos to not hire, it would be a big scandal, worthy of lead stories for quite a while. It may or may not actually be going on but outing it would be HUGE. Colluding to deceive and colluding to blacklist people is not sitting down to drinks after work.
