This is awesome. Nice to see throwback games like this doing well and getting high profile mods to boot.

Good for Deep Silver. Tell the whiny self entitled game journalists to take their hypersensitive crying over complete non-issues and fuck off.

News Comments > XCOM Shooter "Fresh Look" Reveal in "Days"
36. Re: XCOM Shooter Apr 24, 2013, 16:33 Prez

To be clear, LgFriess' qoute incorrectly attributes m00t's point to me. While agree that a few things were lost in the translation by Firaxis, I am nowhere near as nitpicky about the minor ways the remake strayed from the original as he is. In truth the remake did the most important aspects of the gameplay right, and did the XCOM name justice.

It does! Unfortunately by putting "simulator" in the name can lead people to believe it is all realism and tedium. I saw it on Steam and passed it over because of the kind of game the name made me envision.

News Comments > XCOM Shooter "Fresh Look" Reveal in "Days"
26. Re: XCOM Shooter Apr 24, 2013, 13:52 Prez

Obviously we are not indicative of gamedom as a whole, but I still find it telling that in a thread about the upcoming XCOM shooter all the talk is about XCOM the strategy game. Still, given how great I found the Firaxis remake to be, my XCOM strategy itch has been scratched, and I am more willing to give a squad based tactical shooter in the XCOM universe a chance.

On the subject of of the strategy remake I wil chime in that I too thought the lack of randomized maps really hurt the game. I also sorely missed the home base alien invasions. Those were extremely tense in the original.

EDIT: Oh, to address the complaint about the aliens repositioning once found - they did something similar in the first game if they avoided moving and stored all their action points in reserve. There was admittedly an initiative check that allowed high level soldiers to be able to keep going without an alien interrupt that has been done away with but since the new game is all based around cover that was taken out to avoid it being too easy.

News Comments > Ubisoft: Complexity Holding Back Splinter Cell
26. Re: Ubisoft: Complexity Holding Back Splinter Cell Apr 23, 2013, 19:05 Prez

Gamers (yes, even console gamers) are more sophisticated than publishers will ever give them credit for. Games that are more complicated don't need to be simplified. In fact, evidence is suggesting that over-simplification turns gamers off more than complexity does (Dragon Age Origins outsold the sequel by a fair margin as an example). A game system only needs simplification if it is over complicated. Splinter Cell has never been over complicated and needs no simplification for its appeal.

News Comments > Gearbox Snags Homeworld IP
35. Re: Gearbox Snags Homeworld IP Apr 22, 2013, 18:06 Prez

It seems a little unfair to judge Gearbox on how Aliens and DNF turned out. Both were extremely troubled products that had a sordid history before Gearbox even touched them. My only real concern with them acquiring the Homeworld IP is that they have no experience making RTS's , though I imagine they can easily hire some talent to fill that gap. I certainly hope they wouldn't try making a Homeworld-based FPS.

I'll admit Gearbox was not on my wishlist for companies I was hoping would acquire the property, but as someone who loved the Borderlands series more than America and apple pie I am willing to give them a chance here. After all, a lot of the problems that Borderlands and its sequel had were inherent to being designed to run on consoles, and most likely any new Homeworld RTS would be designed PC first.

Considering how atrociously bad the most recent one, "Cartel", was, I think the $15 price is about the only way to revive any interest in the series.

Having liked Dead Island as much as I did makes me more or less "review immune" concerning Riptide. I am just going to wait in case the game has similar technical issues to the first one on release.

I bought the original for 5 bucks thinking it might be decent despite the horrible reviews (which I figured could be more for the controversy than for the game itself) but as it turns out, the game really was that bad. I checked and sure enough the new version is in my Steam account now; dare I install it to see if it is any better?

Lame. Playing off the goodwill created by other Bethesda titles to announce something unrelated. They got their publicity, but they pissed off a lot of people too.

I agree. There was a bunch of hoopla over this announcement, and the climax fizzled. A surival horror game from the makers of Resident Evil? Who gives a shit. Next time just announce it without all this fanfare making people believe its something more significant.

Yeah, I went from mildly annoyed by the "teases" to totally put off by the announcement. Very, very lame.

In today's hypersensitive gaming industry, where habitually offended white knighters are constantly opining for attention and trying to score points for their faux nobility no one in their right minds is going to fund a game with "whore" in the title. John Walker might get apoplectic and fall out (Which would be just swell in my book).

There is just no excuse for Capcom not being successful - they own some great properties. Too bad they atrociously mismanaged them. I will say that Dead Rising 2, despite feeling very much like a console game, was fantastic however. I really wish they had ported Dragon's Dogma to PC.

That was a really complicated and in depth explanation for "way too many calls going through a system of only finite handling capacity". I tried reading and absorbing it twice and both times my eyes started to glaze over. I am normally very technically and technologically minded but only with stuff I can generally make use of. If my brain deems it unimportant I hear "words, words, blah-blah, words, blah, words, yadda yadda yadda".
