News Comments > Steam Autumn Sale
30. Re: Steam Autumn Sale Nov 26, 2014, 16:44 Prez

I am liking what I am seeing on this sale. There a quite a few games marked down to 2 or 3 bucks that I've been wanting to add to my Steam collection like Startopia and Hitman Contracts among others.

As is the case with most complex issues numbers alone don't tell the whole story; often they tell less than half the story. Statistics can be made to dance a jig, and are rarely presented in a proper context. Furthermore, there are factors that statistics do not take into account.

Remember during the Cold War of the '80's where Russia and the US were lobbing nuclear missiles at each other? Me neither. Basically both nations reached absolutely ludicrous stockpiles of nuclear weapons without ever using (and in fact hoping they didn't have to use) a single one. And yet ex-Soviet defectors confirmed in intelligence interviews following the USSR's collapse what we here in the US suspected - the only thing that prevented a full scale invasion by Russia is the existence of said weapons. Hell, we most likely had similar plans that went un-executed for the same reason. The paradox of the Cold War era weapons of obliteration is that it is both a horrible shame that atomic weapons were ever invented yet we were extremely fortunate to have had them. The statistics showing that they were never used and their exorbitant costs to build and maintain does not indicate they were pointless, for they essentialy prevented a horribly bloody war between two superpowers.

In a country so flooded with firearms, it's like a cold war of sorts, where many feel compelled to own them just for a similar type of deterrence. You will never see a statistic for how many home invasions or carjacking didn't happen because of the likelihood of the potential victim owning a firearm in high crime areas like Memphis. I would LOVE to live in a society where there was no need or place for guns. Unfortunately that will never be the US.

I own guns because it is legal, but more to the point because I feel it is a necessity. I work in a bad part of Memphis and have to drive through it all hours of the night. I've had a guy walk up to my car and try to et in the passenger side at a red light. I was at work last night when the decision to not indict was announced and gunshots could be heard throughout the night. I had to pull my gun once because I saw a dangerous situation developing, and the sight of me doing so de-escalated what could have been a bad situation.

All of that said, I wish the damn things were never invented.

I know sarcasm and dark humor are hard to detect on the internet, but I think Porn-o-matic was joking.

And seriously, taking down an app the same day is not "far too slow". Get over yourself Wilson.

Is it fucking ludicrous just what a goddamned fucking piece of shit Uplay is.

I'm downloading my (free) copy of FC4, taking forever, and my system hard crashes somewhere during it. (Thanks DA:I! )

Trying to get Uplay to come back up, and it keeps crashing, so finally I uninstall it and reinstall it. And lo and behold, even though I still have the 5+ GB I had already downloaded, Uplay just goes and insist on redownloading the entire fucking thing again.

FUCK YOU TO FUCKING HELL, UBISOFT, YOU WORTHLESS PIECES OF CUNTDRIZZLE.

Yeah, I'll admit I am partial to Steam but even so, objectively speaking Uplay and Origin have presented loads more problems downloading and installing games than Steam ever does. Steam's download and install process couldn't be smoother, while I can't remember a single time that I didn't have some sort of problem/frustration downloading and installing with Origin and Uplay. I ended up getting things working in the end, but not without some false starts, restarts, and general headaches.

I'm not going to weigh in on whether I think he deserved to get banned because it's not my tournament and not my rules. The tournament host thought he did, so that is enough for me. I will say on a common sense level he ought to choose his words more carefully especially when his opponent is female (which is awesome by the way. No women in gaming? Bah!). It was just an utterly stupid thing to say.

Nice gesture but my eyes generally can't handle any game made pre-1990 that isn't a text adventure.

I've been getting into some adventure games lately - I almost bought this until I noticed a common theme in the reviews for Shadowgate saying it could be REALLY frustrating. I don't like frustration.

On a side note I played the first episode of "Wolf Among Us" and all I can say is "WOW!"

I have to say that it does seem that they are really making this harder on themselves. Just give everyone who asks a refund and stop the negative publicity they are getting. Like Creston said chances are the total number of refunds paid will be small compared to what they have made already.

News Comments > Elite: Dangerous Refund Policy
58. Re: Elite: Dangerous Refund Policy Nov 20, 2014, 14:16 Prez

I think the refunds should be offered to everyone, not just people who haven't played yet. They failed to deliver on what I understand is a promised feature, and that means the ethical thing to do would be to offer everyone who wants one a refund. I played Planetary Annhilation online when it was Early Access because it was the opnly way to try out the game so I could give my feedback, but the only reason I backed it was because of the promised offline mode. I assume that would be the case with some people who were in the Beta. They are burning up a lot of their trust with gamers.
