Doom was not the first. However, it was the first wildly popular one. This is due partly to the design and the implementation and partly to timing. Computer gaming was just beginning to flourish at the time and internet access was becoming more commonplace.

I had two SpaceOrbs (gameport-versions) and the Logitech Cyberman 2. I preferred the Cyberman 2.
But the best controller ever was the TAC-2 for my Sinclair Spectrum (aka Timex Sinclair). I remember thinking that maybe 48K (yes, that's 48 kilobytes) was overkill when I decided between the 16K and 48K versions of that computer. Those were the days...

Something wrong with the demo? |

It performs noticeably worse than the previous (and this on a dual 2GHz G5 with 2Gb RAM!!). There are no loading screens (just the map name and the tip text) when trying Onslaught and the grass foliage seems to be missing a texture (just looks like a green mesh).

Not every NAT device has a DMZ field. I use an Apple Airport basestation and there is support for port mapping, but nothing like the DMZ AFAIK.

"Also, these crazy situations you guys talk about where the lack of a use key will “screw” you, it’s just not true"
Yes, it's true. Perhaps not exactly those mentioned, but other ones are sure to arise. Modes are a bad thing (that was a basic tenet back in user interface classes when I studied computer science back in the eighties).
Making interfaces simple to learn and use is a good thing. But the primary aspect of that is to make sure it does what the user expects at all times.
Anyone remember how you occasionally got stuck on ladders in Half-life because you stumbled into one and the game decided you were going to climb it?

com_sprintf overflow? |

I took it for a quick spin in a single player game. Seems to work just fine except for the fact that I get a lot of com_sprintf overflow messages (in the order of one every two seconds). I get that in both the 10.2 apps, but not in the 10.1 app.
