Anyone know how a laptop with Intel 4500MHD video card will handle StarCraft 2?

Someone was asking me about it today in conversation. They were thinking of ordering a Dell laptop with that card, but SC 2 was a consideration (as well as light gaming in general).

I looked up the basic specs, and it looks like an integrated video card with less than stellar specs. However I also know that Blizzard is fairly lax with the minimum requirements.

Unfortuantely, I'm not finding much on Google about the combination (4500MBD + StarCraft 2).

I bought it online last night (Blizzard's digital download version).

I only had enough time to play through the first mission. I tried to do the tutorials, but some of them were SO flippin' boring, not-to-mention useless since I already know most of the interface.

I like what I see so far. Part of me wishes I could zoom out more, it's not as close as some games but a little higher up would be cool.

Well, this combined with the whole Anti-Aliasing mess is a bit unexpected.

Any product will have bugs, but some people are expecting Blizzard to be the Alpha/Omega of developers.

I didn't play any of the old Blizzard's games at release. Each was already months (or a year) old before I hopped on. I recall they were quite stable and polished, but again that wasn't at release.

I'll be honest, the newest Blizzard game I sent my time in was StarCraft and the expansion.
- I spent a few days with WarCraft 3. It was alright I guess.
- I couldn't get into the whole World of WarCraft thing
- I don't even think I played Diablo 2, I think I only played the first one. Granted whichever one it was, I did play a lot.

James Bond

I'm not that worried. There were recent 3 and 4 year gaps:
1999 - The World is not Enough
2002 - Die Another Day
2006 - Casino Royale
2008 - Quantum of Solace

The only thing that might stink is if it goes on too long and we don't get another Daniel Craig movie. I thought he did a good job.

I rather they wait until they can afford it then rush out a stinker. True, you can have awesome spy films on a shoe string budget... but Bond is all about the big bangs (no pun intended).

4. Re: Why the iPad hasn't killed Kindle: Jul 28, 2010, 09:21 kanniballl

As an e-Reader, there is no comparison. Price, screen, battery life, and I'm sure a bunch of other categories goes to the Kindle (and other similar devices). I consider getting one from time to time, but prefer physical books when reading.

The only nice thing about the iPad is its non e-Reader capabilities. It's a decent tablet for browsing the web, doing basic tasks, and has a bunch of cool little apps. Personally I'd rather get a cheap laptop for that price, but I can see how it appeals to some.

I got an iPhone last year, and since then it's actually offloaded some of my browsing tasks from my PC. I can sit in the family room, pick the thing up, and quickly look up something on the web, check the weather, see who an actor is on IMDB, etc. Obviously for anything major, or even writing emails, I go to my PC.

Even if I didn't have an iPhone, I still wouldn't get an iPad.

Hah. The last Blizzard RTS I really truly enjoyed playing was WC2, but I was 13 and easily impressed.

I *really* enjoyed WarCraft 2, it's one of my favorite classic games. The gameplay, the humor (of the units), it was a blast.

I later tried WarCraft 3, I was not impressed.

StarCraft was one of my favorites as well. I enjoyed the overall single-player experience (story, cut scenes, etc) and I'm a bigger fan of SciFi with cool looking tech than fantasy with siege weapons. Though when playing as the Zerg you might as well be playing an old-school fantasy game.

I have next week off, so I'll probably pick it up by the weekend.

There are 2 BestBuys within driving distance, a couple of Targets, a Walmart, and bunch of GameStop boutiques.

I figure the BestBuys and Walmart will be my best bet later.

Worst case scenario, I buy the game directly from Blizzard.

Good to know

My lack of knowledge still let me laugh though, since the real joke was along the lines of:
- If you're an alien, why do you sound like you're from the North
- Because most planets have a North

I think they repeated the joke a few times in season 1.

Beyond that, not much in terms of cultural gaps, even the historical references to past queens.

I recall years ago going on a family vacation with my immediate family as well as aunt and cousin. We went down to Virginia and while there decided to head to the beach.

We picked a horrible weekend for it, cloudy, hazy, rainy, etc.

We went down to the beach and such on one day where it was quite cloudy + hazy, and none of us (even the adults) considered putting on sun block since it was so gray outside.

Big mistake. We all got quite burned; painfully so. I think we ended up calling the trip short as a result. I probably made out the best since I was wearing long shorts and didn't go in the water and was thus wearing more clothes than everyone else.

So, just because you can't see the sun or the blue sky doesn't mean those rays can't get you.

British humor is easy to understand. Dress up a man as a woman, throw in some heavy sarcasm, a bit of French bashing, and top it off with an unintelligible dialect.

Hey, it's better than, "Git 'r done."

The humor of Doctor Who is easy to follow for those of us on the other side of the pond.

There's not much of a culture gap since they're usually off-world or in a different era, and on the rare occasion they're in the UK the cultural references are low. I think the only time I didn't get the *exact* reference was when they were talking about how Chris E's accent sounded Northern... I guess that means Welsch?

It's been AGES since I've seen British comedies, some of what I've caught has had either a younger Hugh Laurie or Anthony Head. I do recall some of the older sketch comedy to be a bit more different than I'm used to (more "drag" and flamboyant stuff) but I guess it was funny.

The recent Who season was quite a treat, I liked Amy Pond and Rory and thought the season finale was great. I'm really looking forward to the Christmas Special as well as next season.

My *only* complaint was the latest Doctor/Actor (Matt Smith) looks too much like the previous incarnation (David Tennant). I guess they're trying to keep the fan-base now that both the doctor and head writer left.

At least the difference between Chris E and David Tenant was pretty big in terms of looks and behavior. David Tennant and Matt Smith just look too similar.

Actually can I include Valve too, or have they made console games?

They're primarily a PC house, but their games are also out on console.

  • The original Half-Life was ported to the PS2.

  • Most things Half-Life 2 related are on XBox 360 and PS3.

  • Portal is also on the XBox 360 and PS3.

  • Left4Dead is on the XBox 360

  • However my understanding is they develop *for* the PC, with the console versions being ports (or second thoughts).

This is opposite to console games that are ported back to the PC, with all of the horrid UI / control issues that we often see.

It's the nature of the beast. Consoles are powerful enough to do a fair amount of gaming and popular enough that it's a sizable market. While their controls for some games are questionable (like RTS) they handle FPS games well enough.

So if you plan ahead enough, you might be able to port it across 1-2 consoles and bump up your profit a little.

I must be getting older, as I find I'm a lot more picky these days. It seems like anymore, the vast majority of the time I just stuff the title into netflix and vow to see it 6 months later when it hits disc.

Ditto. To drag me to the theater I need at least one of the following:

    a) friendly company

    b) something that looks like it will be thought provoking with a twist ending, so I don't have to avoid hearing about the ending for 6-8 months at work or online. It has to be something I *want* to see, but want to be surprised or go in fresh.

    c) something that just *really* appeals to me, something that I really can't wait X months to see. Maybe nostalgia, maybe a concept I like, etc. This is becoming more and more rare.

Visuals don't really cut it for me anymore as an incentive for the theater, my screen is nice and works fine for everything. Heck I even skipped Avatar at the theaters and that was simply eye-candy.

However, I will admit that *one* of my local theaters switched to digital projectors and I notice the improvement. I'm not saying it's better than classic, but it's better than the *trashed projectors* some of the theaters near me use. FOCUS! FOCUUSSSSS!

Boo, just read on wikipedia that they're going for the $15 subscription fee.

I recall reading early on how the team was hoping it would be free-to-play, but it was still up in the air.

Since we're talking Sony here I doubt we'll see a lifetime subscription option. Oh well, I guess I'll play it for 1-2 months.

    11. Biker Found Shot, Dead After Collision With Deer. Jul 19, 2010, 14:53 kanniballl

Weird story. Gotta feel back for the family.

I wonder what happened, but I doubt it'll ever make the news.

I could see that branching out to a Darwin award. Like he tried to shoot a deer/tree/object while riding but crashing into a deer and accidentally shot himself in the head mid-crash.

Or a hunter shot what he thought was a resting deer, walked closer to find it was a bike accident and that he shot the biker in the head. He tossed the gun and panicked,.

Or it was a murder (shooting him in the head mid-drive) and he just happened to crash into a deer after shot. The murderer is probably scratching his head over that one and left the gun behind in shock.

Or a murderer somehow set it up so a head-shot corpse was on a moving bike going like 10MpH was hoping to drive it into a lake or make it look like a decapitation-accident and a deer walked in front of him.

    Really... weird.

Well, if your experience matched mine, basically unless multiple AI armies attacked in series you could beat them 1 on 3-4. We usually were able to win 2 vs 6 without much trouble -- as long as we had choke points.

    That's all I remember.

I recall playing with my dorm-mates doing 2vs6 in that map I described. It was just about the only map we ever played in matches or humans-vs-AI, save for variations with different mineral counts.

I think I also did 1vsX in that map too.

But I don't recall playing on any other maps, which might lack choke points.

Oh well, I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks how poor of a player I am.

Good theory, and it's one I considered when he appeared to wake up in the plane. After he finally wakes up at the end he doesn't really interact with his team or the client much. They just exchange glances, which is about as much as one would do with a stranger on any other flight.

If you want to think about it heavily there are still lots of ways to interpret it.

Another thing I noticed (or perhaps missed and am wrong)...

About 1/2 way through the movie after he tests the new sedative he is interrupted mid top-test. The top fell down and he picked it up and left in a hurry.

I don't *recall* him ever trying the test in what he assumes is real life after that event until the end. Perhaps from the sedative taste on it was a dream.

Unless he tested it in front of Ellen Page after she woke him up in the warehouse later in the film. There was a lot of stuff happening in my row around that scene so I don't recall if he spun it for her.

Yeh, I like that one map that had multiple variations (mostly due to resources). It was an 8 player map where each player got placed in a small isolated section only reachable via a choke point or via air.

I caught Inception on Sunday. I enjoyed it, definitely one of the better movies I've seen in a theater in the last few years. Then again I've only been to the theater maybe 5 times in the last 2 years...

It was decent, it wasn't too much of mind-frell like eXistenZ or some other weird reality-questioning films. But it was interesting enough that it kept my attention.

I did hear a few "what just happened" questions in the theater with someone else explaining to their kid/father/girlfriend/etc, but it wasn't too loud or that often so it didn't bother me much. At least this wasn't the kind of movie where you take your impatient children, so I didn't have to worry about whiny kids for 2 hours.

I give it a 4/5. It wasn't my favorite of films, but it was quite well done and fun. And to be honest, compared to the rest of the dreck I've seen on DVD lately maybe it's closer to a 4.5/5.
