The only reason Terra Nova even got a full season order with those production costs was Spielberg's backing. Very poorly executed show overall, I've rarely been so bored while watching something with so much potential.

Tell me about it. It's almost as bad as Walking Dead, which is cringe worthy in my book.

And people wonder why I avoid most US television and vastly prefer the stuff the Brits are putting out these days.

I hate the whole zombie genre, which is why I haven't watched Walking Dead. I'm not against it or whatever, just not a fan.

But the reviews said that (at least) the first season was really good. I can't confirm or deny though.

Really, the only show I REALLY look forward to watching every week is Archer

Lost Girl, a Canadian import on SyFy is also pretty decent. A bit riske for basic Cable but otherwise alright.

House of Lies is a great Premium cable show, as is Spartacus (though the 1st season was better).

Everything else is "meh" I'll watch other stuff if I don't have anything better to do, but there's not much out there that really drawls me in.

The SFX were good for TV, I agree with you that those people were just whining. The show's costs were already insane without leaning on CGI that wouldn't have helped make the actual stories more interesting. The real problem was mediocre writing and characterization. I don't know what I expected from the show but it wasn't regurgitated plotlines from TNG season 1.

Yeh, definitely the writing. I'm just surprised they failed when given such solid raw material to work with. They could have gone in any one of a dozen directions, and they somehow chose one of the 2 paths to cancellation.

Meanwhile the son drove me nuts;
  • I hate you

  • I forgive you

  • I hate you

  • I'm going to do something SOOOO stupid

  • I'm going to spend the next 6 episodes whining about a girl I just started dating being stuck in the future even though a hottie is obviously into me

  • I'm going to work for our enemy (how could that POSSIBLY back-fire)

  • I'm going to punch out the NEW dictator in front of his royal guards, because that couldn't possibly end badly for our resistance movement

  • The sad thing is, he really WAS acting like a stupid teenager which is one of the reasons why I kind of don't want kids... ever.

But it had pay-off; after hearing him whine ALL YEAR about that girl he was dating back in the future we get to see her explode in front of him 2 minutes after they're re-united. It dove-tailed nicely into getting his face beat in by the new dictator.

It really did have potential, to the point where I can't see HOW they managed to screw it up. It had:
  • Time Travel

  • Dinosaurs

  • Conspiracy (people in the future want to do... something)

  • Bad guys in the past

  • Guy from Avatar (did a great job here)

  • Guy from US-version of Life on Mars (also did a good job)

  • Skye was alright (I remember her from "Kings")

  • It had a lot of cool things going for it... and yet it just failed.

I blame part of it on dedicated too-much-time each weekend on the family-oriented stuff. I'm fine with SOME family stuff going on (keeps the main character grounded, shows what they're all fighting for) but it just seemed like too much. Add to that, the son was the worst character on TV in the past year (annoying + stupid + inconsistent).

Some people whined about the SFX, but considering it was a TV show it was alright. My only gripe was that "animated gif" of the large fish they showed... that was weak sauce. But besides that, even their worst effects were passable for TV.

No offense, but isn't push-to-talk a common thing in MMO's? I know my league asks for that in DCUO so I figured it was common practice elsewhere.

Otherwise it's just annoying in general the instant someone starts to take a drink or if the ambient sounds are loud enough to trigger the mic.

I really wasn't a fan of the last Doom.

Too many dark rooms and "jump scares" Eventually most of them became obvious where they would spawn (even on the first run through).

Also, some of the monsters didn't look that great. I know the "flying flaming skulls" are a throw-back to the older games but they looked kind of lame here.

I'm not saying it was bad, I just wasn't "wow'ed" like some other people were.

Personally I had more fun with Quake 4 (which I think used the same engine).

I don't believe we ever got a winter here in Dallas and are expecting mid 80's here for the next few days. I would have liked something cold for about a week to kill off all the bugs. But this leads me to think that this is going to be a brutal summer.

Yeh, here in NJ we've had very mild weather. It was rare to see my temps below 30 in the mornings... and usually around 40-50. I went without a jacket for most of the season so afternoons were probably often in the 50-60 range.

Meanwhile some past winters, the temps would be like 15, 10, etc on some mornings on the way to work... not EVERY morning but enough. And snow, forget about it. We had a couple minor snows by me (barely more than flurries) . I think we had maybe 2 or 3 that accumulated around an inch.

October/November made me think the winter was going to be Brutal. Since the end of October gave us a freak snow storm that blacked out a solid portion of the North East. Mother Earth is a tease.

I'm surprised that the record distance was that short. I have made paper planes that had longer time aloft than this, but they generally apex just after launch and then slowly spiral downwards. If I had a venue to fly them in I'm sure I could tweak them to fly straight. I think the world record duration is something like 27 seconds, so given the proper environment something like that could probably go quite far.
    Eh, I could see it.

226ft is just about 3/4rd of a Football field which is pretty far to throw a paper airplane.

Granted, this was inside (what looks to be) an airplane hangar or something... so the reduction of wind probably helps (and hurts). Updrafts are common, even in back yards.

Meanwhile I believe throwing into a slight breeze will give you a lot of "loft" time because of the increase air-speed and thus "lift" It won't translate into yardage, but it will let the paper stay up there longer.

    CNN Video

In short, apparently CNN (and others) took it on faith that a blog photo of a receipt with a $133+ bill the customer left a tip of 1% with a note "Get a real job" was in fact real.

Big surprise! They investigated it LATER and found out it was a hoax.

Yet another example of my lost faith in CNN... they keep posting these viral videos and such on their front page and treat them as news.

There's "News" which is researched and fact-checked. And then there's spreading what's essentially gossip from blogs and videos. I would've hoped CNN would've skipped that but I guess everyone is afraid of them 'internets.

I guess (in my mind) I filed Force Unleashed as non-canon, though that's more wishful thinking on my part as opposed to any source. And yeah, the idea that Vader had this hidden apprentice seemed laughable.

    Emperor: Where ya been, Vader?
Vader Ohhhhh...<sssiih-hauh, siiih-hauh> just running errands.

As far as the other actors, I lay all blame squarely as Lucas' feet. This is also the point where I direct everyone to watch the fine documentary "The People vs George Lucas" as it perfectly sums up my hatred of the man.

That's how I saw it too, that it fell into non-cannon or at least some flavor of expanded-universe stuff.

When I heard that they had different levels of expanded-universe, my head kind of exploded. It's hard enough keeping track of 2 things, but keeping track of 4+ things that half-encompass eachother... that's annoying.

I liked the Star Wars: Bloodlines threaad by Karen Traviss. She put together this real nice tapestry outlining the past of the Madalorian warriors (Boba Fett) during Legacy of the Force: Bloonlines.

Lucas threw away every single scrap when he did the cartoon... he didn't keep a single thing. Which annoyed her quite a bit since she was working with multiple authors to get it in there. You'd think they'd at least borrow an device or theme here and there. But no, some months after publication he said "Bzzzt... it's all wrong"

So she flipped out, and said something that ticked off a lot of viewers so they hate her now even though her books were some of the best in the Legacy of the Force series.

Steam has been a god send for indies. Their upfront seems a little high, but getting your game on the front page gets it in front of millions of people.

Assuming your game meets the arbitrary standards that Valve sets for Steam.

It's actually fairly difficult to get an indie game on Steam; you must have just the right combination of innovation, aesthetics, game-play, and planetary alignment or it's a no-go. (And they won't even tell you why your game was turned down.)

I'm sure there is a quality-component to reviewing games. The want it to be THE place to get online gaming... but they don't want every cruddy game out there.

For example, if it turned into the Apple "App Store" then it would stink. Heck even with them turning down loads of apps, you still have dozens of "flashlight" apps and other lame/worthless junk.

If you have to dig through a mountain of trash before you find something that *might* be a gem... then the heap isn't worth it.

They want quantity, but they also want to be known as having quality or highly-demanded stuff.

    Just ranting a bit.

Ah yes, the unpaid week off for the Christmas holidays. I remember that well -- though not for HP.

When I was a contractor it hurt me in other ways to. The company work-week was 37.5 hours but my contracting company was 40. So if you wanted to get paid for (other) holidays you had to average X hours of the last 7 months or something.

Of course, that week off for Christmas made it impossible to get any holiday pay until after July 4th as it dropped my average below the contractor threshold.

Arresting people for it is becoming more common.
    ...

Don't take this the wrong way: I'm the most boring human being on earth. No alcohol or anything else. And I trust our boys and girls in Blue.

Anyway, where-as alcohol consumption is pretty straight forward... wouldn't this be more subjective? So can't this one be abused by untrustworthy folk? I'm asking an honest question and not trying to troll.

Sure, if your cruiser-cam caught them driving all kinds of crazy on the road... then yeh they're screwed. But...

Odor could be because someone came from a party and now their hair wreaks. Perhaps that's the reason they left.

Similar to testing surfaces or whatever... they were at a party and left.

Similar hair or urine test might just back up the above.

You have the officer's report as to whether your eyes are dilated and such. Which could be... skewed.

But if it was something like swerving to avoid an animal (and thus crossing the line)... the cop pulls you over and smells that... even if you're fine aren't you screwed?

I know nothing about the testing... whether it's "any amount what-so-ever == positive == screwed" vs a level/ratings think like alcohol. Or really anything involved "that" whole thing.

Again, I do not do anything or saying "cops are [blank]." And if I even THINK there's a chance I'm gonna drink I arrange to be driven.

Just saying... isn't the line a little blurry on the above

Yeh, this has been one mild winter in NJ; probably the mildest one I can remember.

We've only had a couple of snow falls, and only 1 or 2 actually accumulated a little (not counting the freak storm in late October).

Very few days of bitter cold, I recall many days just a few years ago that my car thermometer would read 10F when I started it in the morning. This winter, barely in the 20's in the morning and lately only in the 30s and 40s.

I like snow: it looks nice out and if it's bad enough I get to either work from home or have the day off entirely. My dog used to love it a lot to the point I'd play a lot of snowball fetch. But he's old and slow now and doesn't do that anymore.

I'm not saying I want Northern Canada weather, but more than we're getting.

I forget what show it was, but they had a skit showing what "Ferris Bueller" was up to now.

Pretty much he's trying to pull the exact same stuff on his roommate (instead of his mom) and his boss (instead of the principle). Both thought he was a lame loser.

I think the skit ended with him trying to pull the "Sausage King of Chicago" bit; only the real "king" was actually at the bar there and had his men give him a beat-down.

All I remember about the specifics was that Gilbert Godfried was the Sausage King, so I don't know if it was SNL / Funny or Die / an old MAD TV skit / etc.

I used to think the same thing: why have both a smartphone and a tablet. Then I was forced to use an iPad for a while at work and started to like it.

Sure, I CAN browse the net quickly on my phone... but it's more of a strain on the eyes.

So I got myself an iPad with some gift money and I've liked it. I just leave it on my night-table or near the TV and grab it when I want to read something quick, check the weather, google / wiki something, etc. Just basic / casual stuff. Anything that requires too much typing I'll go over to my PC and start using that.

Meanwhile, it's more solid than any real notebook. I can semi-throw it on the cough and not worry about it... while a laptop has the screen-hinge as well as a HDD.

    Is it perfect? No
Is it worth the cash if you can only choose between laptop/tablet? HECK NO

    But it's nice.

From experience there appears to be a significant portion of people who do not believe things are done unless they see them being done.

Another group, containing mostly the same people, do not believe anyone who says they will do something, regardless of past history, therefore it must be done "now!".

Another group, again much the same people, think everything they do or require to be done is important and "now!". Occasionally that is because it actually is. But usually these people are just very bad at organising themselves and cannot cope with the extra variable of you.

I realize the "don't trust it unless I see it" mindset... I work with some people that will forget they promised something / forget they accepted a calendar invite / not read my email+text / etc. In which case seeing someone in person and such isn't that far fetched.

I don't agree with hovering, but I can accept it.

But if you see someone with a messy sandwich in their mouth and force them to stop and do something "so quickly" that they can't even go to the restroom to wash their hands... that's just being a jerk.

Come back in 30-60 minutes and ask me THEN.
