Ray, are you talking about the 2001 e3 video for Duke Forever? I think they were saying it was the 10th anniversery of Duke\Duke Nukem franchise, as Duke Nukem 3D was a sequel to two previous side scrolling Duke games from the early 90s for the PC. Duke Nukem 3D came out in 1996.

When Steam first came out I was kind of uncertain about it in general, but now thats it's matured for over a year now I think it's an absolute step up from the interface days of old 4 years ago. My only small minor beef is that the buddy list is still kind of quirky. It works about half the time, or it doesn't show your friends as being online. Other than that it's been smooth sailing and bug free as far as my experience.

I got my ATI HL2 rebate from ebay for 20 bucks, months ago. As most of us know, this is the vanilla bronze package. I just upgrkaded it to the silver package for only 10 bucks through Steam though! So I will be getting HL2 silver package for a grand total of 30 bucks! Score!

Neat-o kean-o, I hope this game goes gold soon. (Shameless self plug) I got my copy of Half Life 2 through a ebay bid on the ATI rebate coupon. Price? 20 dollars with S&H. Back to the subject at hand, it looks like the audio is another 1 GB of space.

Excitement isn't half of it over at the PlanetHalfLife forums. I think some of them are smothering themselves in warm gravy and having dogs lick it clean off in sheer ectasy. Nice to see some evidence that this game is coming out before the end of the year though.

The "base source shared materials.gcf" in the Steam folder is 1 GB. Luckily i got it in like under an hour. About 1.1 MB sec on my cable modem. Never had a connection that fast-- I almost wonder if this was p2p or just the old fashioned download from a server approach? I could be wrong, but didn't valve hire someone that largely had a hand in the creation of bittorent?

Just like with Counter Strike Source, I found that I could connect and get like 1.2 mbps on my cable modem by quitting Steam after the Half Life 2 preload prompt comes up and then says "try again later". After I restarted Steam I went to available games and tried again and it went. Or maybe I was just lucky both times, m'eh, not sure...

HL2 preload tomorrow |

Sometime during the day of august 19th, Half Life 2 will begin to preload according to this post by Gabe Newell. http://www.hl2fallout.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3060 It was supposed to come out today but got held off for another day because of everyone sending benchmark stress test results of their computer running the Source engine in CS: Source. Btw, I got 74 fps average on my stress test-- thats with a Geforce 6800 128 MB with 16 pipelines (not the 12 pipeline vanilla 6800). Thats at 1024x768-- 6x antialiasing and 4x anisotropic with all eye candy on at high detail. Vsync off of course. 61.77 driver set.

Doom 3 copy protection |

I know this post is about the Linux port, but it does pertain to Doom 3 as well. I burned a copy of Hexen 2 Portal of Praevus for my friend with Clone Cd. (Before you start calling me a pirater, bear in mind that this game is no longer sold directly through Activision and the only place you can get is second hand ebay\Amazon used copies, etc.-- its abandonware-- the publisher does not make money off of these). Anyway, putting the Doom 3 load disc in, it said it detected cd copying software and that I had to remove it to continue. Its not the end of the world, I can live with this, but still pretty interesting nontheless.

techie question about RAM.. |

I just purchased a 6800 128 MB card. I paid $325 for it, but I read reviews that it wasn't the best value for the dollar to invest 100 more dollars in a 256 MB version of the same card. There was a 6800 for $280 on pricewatch-- and I was initially going to get that, but then I saw it was only 12 pipelines. So I got this one instead. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-145-084&depa=1 I read in reviews that a big part of the new 6800 series being very good was the fact that it's higher end cards had a 16 pipe GPU, so I invested the 60 more dollars in that 16 pipe rather than the 12 pipe. I swear to god (it seems)every year like the emphasis on video card's hardware highlights are changed to different parts of the card. Anyway, if I try to run Doom 3 on high detail with this 128 MB card, what will happen if it runs out? Will it get dumped to my 1 GB of DDR3200 memory or will it go to a pagefile on my harddrive? If this will be a performance hit, should I just adjust individual settings in Doom 3 and put texture detail on medium? Hmm.. =/ Anyone who could give advice would put my mind at ease. Oh, and here's my video card history.
a 2 MB SiS video card Creative Labs 3d Blaster Voodoo 2 12 MB w/ a SiS 4 MB video card. Geforce 2 mx 64 MB Geforce 4 ti 4200 128 MB Geforce FX 5900 (non-pro)128 MB -I sold this to a friend after only 5 months of use, heh, I paid 210 and sold it to him for 150, which I used towards my current card; Geforce 6800 128 MB.

I don't feel as if Romero screwed Quake up, and I don't see how you can say that, but you're entitled to your opinion. If by screwed up, you mean by id's public image with his superstardom and arrogance, then perhaps you're right. I think his levels were of great contribution to Quake. He made the first episode of Quake, including the boss stage, and the last boss in the end map. He added some level of interaction to the game, like how you had to use the environment to kill the bosses rather than just blowing the crap out of them with a rocket launcher. I know this is nothing big now, but there were few fps games then that did this. Willits and and the rest were also good map authors, and at the time Sandy Peterson's levels towards the last episode absolutely creeped the hell out of me with those long dark, cobalt blue corridors. Anyway, I'm rambling.

I think Trinity was the engine that Carmack was going to make before settling on making Quake 3 Arena. About a year ago Grey Matter (RtCW) were supposed to make a game called trinity with id's blessings, but I think that game was cancelled-- i could be wrong on that last note.

Possible fix for some drives. |

I know a lot of people are experiencing problems with LG cd rom drives.
http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php
Heres a link for misc. firmware upgrades for CD ROMs. If you don't know what model # drive you have, you can almost always find out by going to Device Manager in the System window of your Windows Control Panel. Then somewhere in the hardware lineup should be a listing for DVD\CD ROM drives. If you click on Properties most systems should tell you what revision the drive is.

Mortar bug in .6 (?) |

Has anyone else noticed the mortar launcher thing for the support class sets itself upright so far in this new patch that it would be almost useless to use it against any ground unit, unless you were on the bottom of a hill, and an enemy unit were at the top? Was this intentionally done for balancing or a bug? I mean, most flying units are too fast to even hit with the mortar anyway.

I'm sure this is going to be one of those 100+ threads of people complaining that they can't stand Doom 3, throwing it in your faces they don't like it, and completely disregarding other people's thoughts that they might actually like Doom 3 and snubbing them in the process.
