HL2 was/is great, imo.
I do a play-through every 2-4 years. Even though I have the PC version from the 2004 ATI bundle coupon (remember that?!), I am currently playing it on Xbox 360 for the silly gamerscore achievements. The only games I ever do this with are Doom/Doom 2, Final fantasy 6, and 8 bit/16 bit era Zelda games.

Dear past-self:
Team Fortress 2 finally came out in 2008, with the addition of custom party hats for your characters. There have been two expansions to Half-Life 2, but Valve software can't count to 3 so don't hold your breath on a third one. John Carmack briefly dabbled in rockets before leaving id software to focus on virtual reality headsets. Duke Nukem Forever finally came out in 2011 after 3d realms battled with feature creep, management issues, and eventual selling of the ip to Gearbox. It was bland even if you don't count the years and money dumped on it.
Also, the economy took a shit. Seriously rethink your racking up of student debt because you wanted to better your money-making opportunities. Also, stay away from Jean. She will rip your heart out, breath fire on it, and scatter the ashes like one blows on a white dandelion flower.
-Sincerely, your 2014 self.

I would be all over this, as long as the lag isn't too bad.

Well, let's just agree to disagree. I'm not going to fact check for hours on end on a debate that was 10 years ago. 30 minutes of research and forum crawling on 2004 era topics generally brings me to the same conclusion that I began with. Valve could have made compromises with some code changes with minimal loss in quality, but didn't.
I fact checked, and I can't support the other conclusion.

"...Valve coded Half-Life 2's DirectX 9.0 path to use 24-bit floating-point shaders all of the time, when it is really not needed all of the time. "
"...possible to force 16-bit floating-point shaders and see no massive difference in image quality."
Not denying that the FX card was inferior to the R300 chipset, but Valve didn't have to force DX 8.0 on the FX.
Source.
Edit: fixed url.

Seems to echo 10 years ago when Half Life 2 came out. As memory serves, Valve had some sort of sponsorship with ATI (prior to AMD buyout) and the Geforce 5/FX series cards were deliberately crippled because of poor shader model performance. Some tech savvy individuals found out that like 2 lines of code would alleviate that problem.

I gave my Geforce 260 GTX to my nephew 2 Christmases ago in a rig I built for him. But by another year's time he should have something else anyway.

Morbid curiosity made me search for this, and lo and behold the news post is still here even if the webpage (my first webpage) is not.

I'm getting old.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me...

Actually I think by now it would be at least thrice.
I'll give Microsoft this though:
Compared to when Direct X first came out with Windows 95, they really got their stuff together to get it working fairly well now (19 years later!)
I feel old.

I agree with above. This game is so minimalist designed and 1-dimensional. I played it for 5 minutes and I just shook my head. It's like those thinly veiled games that are actually ads on the side of a web browser-- you play it for 5 minutes and move on. Not sure what people are in a twist about.

Played the new Plants vs Zombies 2 update on mobile (an EA game)?
It sucks now. Lawnmowers do not replenish when you beat the map (as they did before). You have to pay cash to get them back unless you farm gold on easy but trivial/repetitive maps. It's lame. I sent them an e-mail saying I would be uninstalling the game if it wasn't adjusted/fixed in the next patch.

Lot of places are going down due to DDos today. Here's a visual representation of what's going down.
