Steam seems to be have gotten it right.

What has Steam got to do with this? Steam is a kind of DRM itself and AAA games there cost the same as on retail, although they should be cheaper with no media and box and stuff. If you buy them years later or on a sale, the price has nothing to do with retail vs digital distribution!

Me too, the way people describe these patches, I'm expecting Bloodlines one and a half.

It is well known that Bloodlines was released unfinished and rushed. The plus version of the Unofficial Patch restores a lot of unused content found in the game files so it's almost a kind of restoration project compared to the basic version which stays true to the original released game. Expect actual new content in some future patch as we try to recreate the cut library level according to infos from Brian Mitsoda himself using lots of assets already done by Troika!

Maybe I have already said this before, but why is it that we get news here for simple iPhone apps and almost none for Android? Is someone a hard-core Apple fan or what?

Actually I didn't like those at all. The writing just didn't grip me, try some William Gibson instead :)!

In the article they show L4D2 running on a linux machine. They talk about how they're also porting Source to linux.

I can easily believe that, after all didn't all id games sooner or later work on Linux? I can also believe that Valve plan to create a Linux Steam client. It shouldn't be much of a technical problem, they are working on Steam more than on any game anyway ;). But I would never believe that a hardware based Linux/Steam combo could be successful! Most people I know use Linux to be free of control and Steam is exactly the opposite with Valve behaving almost worse than MS!

Could be they are trying to get out from under the MS thumb with the new hardware they are developing. If this new hardware is Linux powered and runs some version of wine this could be a disaster for MS on the home desktop.

I don't believe that! Valve isn't big enough to try something like this. I think the reason is much more obvious: With HL2:EP3 in limbo, no other games except commercialised mods released for years and EA's Origin mirroring the Steam scheme, getting as much customers into their cash-cow Steam is all that Valve cares about right now...

Indeed. I didn't know about this translation stuff, but together with my observation of them only commercialising mods right now, Valve is surely using community efforts like no other community before.

Like DOTA2? Team fortress 2? Portal? Portal 2? L4D? L4D2?

Q.E.D. All of these are just commercialised mods and demos. DOTA2 is based on the Warcraft mod DOTA. Team Fortress 2 is based on the HL mod Team Fortress. Portal is based on "Narbacular Drop" and Portal 2 adds elements from "Tag: The Power of Paint". L4D and L4D2 are based on the "Killing Floor" mod for Unreal. You see the scheme? No original content! Valve just takes a proven concept from a mod and commercialises it. It all started with CS and now they add elements of a new CS mod to their new version. Surprise...

So Valve found another mod crew to do the work for them. More time to make HL2:EP3, or just a cheap way to exploit amateurs while concentrating on making money with Steam? I'm really sick and tired of Valve commercialising mods instead of creating a new game!

But, it looks like they actually did make it, but instead of being in the original release they made it a DLC...in order to get more money from those players that like the game no doubt, but at least it is available.

Maybe they didn't get this part of the game finished, but honestly, this reeks like a "Let's look what we could cut from the game to make some extra cash as DLC." decision to me. DLCs after a game ends are mission packs, but in the middle? Very suspicious...

If they're pretending not to think about how they'll make money off their games before they go on sale, that's ridiculous.

I agree. Newell comes across to me as the greatest hypocrit of the game industry with lines like the above, because all Valve is doing at the moment is cashing in on cheap franchise sequels and mods that they can easily commercialize instead of creating something unique themselves like HL2:EP3!

Episode 3 wouldn't exactly be new. It would be an expansion pack to HL2, just like Episodes 1 and 2 were.

An expansion still means new content and a new story that hasn't been done before.

I wouldn't exactly call TF2, Portal or L4D quick cash-ins either. In fact, those games were all much more innovative and new than any of the HL2 expansions.

Not in my opinion. TF2 is TF only with a new graphic style. The same goes for Portal 1 (Narbacular Drop), Portal 2 (Tag: The Power of Paint) and L4D (Killing Floor).

Sigh. Another cheap mod-to-game conversion to make some quick cash like with TF2, Portal1/2 and L4D1/2. When will Valve ever release something new again, like HL2 Episode 3? In my eyes, making games for fun is not the main center of Valve anymore now, it's just making games to keep Steam running and milking it. After BF3 and others left Steam, they probably thought it's time for their own military shooter...

Valve did exactly the same when they forced all Counter-Strike players into Steam at the time. Without this move Steam wouldn't have been one bit as successfull, so it's only logical for the competitors to do the same!

Not so sure the Russian version had any more voice audio than this either though??

Of course the Russian version had full voice overs. I'm quite disappointed they dropped even those and I will very probably continue doing my own patches to fix bugs as well, hoping they will work on the "English" versions too ;)!

As far as I know there is a Star Wars mod for FS2 in the works.

Also I recently rediscovered the Babylon 5 FS2 mod "The Babylon Project" which has been finished some time ago and is very playable. It has lots of great campaigns and missions, some straight out of the show! There is nothing that beats watching a Shadow battlecrab slice a Narn cruiser in half or flying Shadow or Vorlon bioships yourself :)!
