As a side note to all of this, I wonder how many things like this it will take before Valve starts being more picky about the games you can put money down for on Steam.

Why should Valve get picky? Don't they get a percentage for everything sold on Steam? If so, every game there, even broken ones, may bring them profit, and they are clearly moving in that direction with the whole Greenlight and Early Access programs. After all, the rare games released by Valve themselves won't keep them afloat for long I guess...

Why are they giving Steam the finger for this?

Why should we need a client running in the background for a simple demo? I still can't understand why people made such a fuss about the Xbox One being online, but want everything else to be on Steam which does exactly the same thing! Free PC gaming means getting demos and patches from whatever server I like to get them from...

Its too fucking ambitious by far, and the whole damn thing is screaming SCAM! of some kind...

Well, I don't really know everything that the game promises, but you should remember that great space sims like Diaspora or The Babylon Project have been made by fans alone already and a small Ukrainian company called DeepShadows created "The Precursors" years ago, which is basically a space sim with FPS/RPG and mech combat combined! Very ambitious too and sadly hardly known in the west because the publisher went bankrupt in the financial crisis, but a game like this is possible.

I don't know where I read it, but someone suggested Valve charge full price for Half Life 3 on Windows Steam and release it for free on SteamOS. That would give SteamOS a big boost.

...or the other way around with people pirating it exactly because of that trick. Anyone remember Halo 2 and that it was only released for Windows Vista? I can't remember this giving Vista a big boost :)!

I don't see SteamOS replacing Windows, except maybe for some gamers moving into the living room. Because to me the beautiful thing about the PC compared to consoles or tablets or smartphones is that I have one high end computer on which I can WORK AND PLAY! A SteamOS game only platform wouldn't help me with that so my PC will have to stay anyway.

Several posters in here are flat out TERRIFIED that Valve is abandoning traditional pc gaming. They aren't. Calm down. Ignore all three announcements if you want.

I see it like this: Formerly Valve made games, great single player games like HL and HL2 long ago, only small episodes, riddle games and multi player games more recently, but still games! Now they seem to bet everything on Steam and hardware against the major consoles. If they fail the game company Valve may become history. If they succeed probably too, why create games when you can make even more money just by selling other peoples games for them? Where the hell is HL2:EP3?

As has already be mentioned here, this just look like the usual shooter controls of a smartphone to me, to which I have two comments: 1) Why can't we just use our smartphones instead by using a dedicated app and Bluetooth or WiFi or IR to connect to the console? Isn't this already planned for the XBox One? 2) I never could get the hang out of this way to play a FPS, so there is no way I will ever use one! Mouse and keyboard are still a necessary requirement for me.

Hey Gabe, people want half life 3, stop your jibberish about operating systems and future and get to work.

My thoughts exactly! But as Valve only lives of Steam and not of the few commercialised mods they released over the last few years, it's obvious that any threats to Steam are critical to Newell. As for the death of the desktop, I'll never believe that. Everyone needs work to be done on computers now and then and this will done on desktops, not on consoles and not on tablets either. But probably every household has one by now, while there is still room on the console and tablet front!

50. Re: id: RAGE Aug 5, 2013, 03:32 Wesp5

I loved RAGE and honestly, it's the best game id made since Doom! Most of the others were little more than engine demos, but RAGE features great shooting, vehicle combat, large level, beautiful characters and even basic quest stuff. More than every other id game ever did! But I agree with you that they seriously broke it with that mega-texture stuff. Not only did this make the game look ugly on systems not fast enough, it also killed any kind of modding which all the other id games lived upon...

So just reading all the explanations here again convinces me that the ending is stupid and illogical and tacked on :). Just watch yourself trying to explain it away using reasons like: "So years go by and you carve Anna's name onto your hand as a reminder, then promptly forget. Robert Lutece has second thoughts about all this multiverse shit, and makes his sister do something about it." Oh, and what about all these towers and all the other pairs visible watching out of them? From that moment on the mechanics of the world change which is why I feel it is tacked on!

The Rapture expansion sounds to me like it is the ending the game actually deserved, instead of the stupid, illogical and tacked on feeling ending it got in the original game after leaving Rapture...

So is this "new engine" just good old Quake 3 with an improved graphical renderer on top or something completely new? Also while those faces look cool, can they actually do facial animations to convey feelings or are they as static as the puppet faces in Bioshock Infinite? Not that I imagine that facial animations really matter much in a game like this ;).

...but then Steam itself is nothing more than a DRM managment system disguising as a Online Distribution Service.

Patch is apparently not on ModDB, and I can't seem to get it from The Patches scrolls at all--keeps telling me the source is unreadable and to try later--at any rate my normal 25k/s down from TPS does me little good!...;)

The patch is not on Moddb because it's an exclusive for TPS. But I thought their own server have improved availability after GameFront blocked a lot of countries. Or maybe you tried the short time in which they updated the patch for a little hotfix...

Yeah, you should! It's unpolished but a lot better with the patch. Please wait for a day or so though, because some stupid time-stamp checking on DeepShadows part and Windows or WinRAR daylight saving update messed the current version up. I will have it fixed in no time!

Just to clear this up, I have nothing to do with the kickstarter. I just mentioned it to Blues, because it's home forum is the same Planet Vampire site that I use for my Bloodlines patches.

Carmack and whoever is left of the good old id we love should just pack up and head over to Valve where their epic legacy can continue without another uber fail like Rage.

What should they do there? Valve hasn't released a game of their own for years! All they publish nowadays are commercialized mods done by the mod or university teams themselves while the rest of Valve lives off the money Steam provides them from games other companies create!

The problem is that they were threadbare mechanics that add nothing to the game...

Well, that's your opinion. It added a lot to the game for me: I got basic quests, cool characters, great racing and the usual fine id shooting. That's more that can be said for the typical Call of Duty clone FPS nowadays.

Be a great shooter, a good RPG or at least get the hybrid stuff right a la Deus Ex.

In my opinion even the original Deus Ex wasn't that great. Much too obvious level design to support multiple ways, always a vent where you needed it. If you want a perfect FPS/RPG hybrid, look at VTM Bloodlines!
