bump mapping and normal mapping are different... normal mappings are made from a high resolution model and make you believe the low resolution model has a bigger resolution, it doesnt change shape allows better details and smoother "curves" as far as lighting is concerned
bump mapping comes a greyscale texture brighter pixels arebumps darker ones creases .. adding further details
both techniques are compatible and they need dramatic lighting to be very good flat lighting make them look a bit flatter..
