82. These big battles don't exist May 10, 2003, 22:42 Lactose The Intolerant

The ppl going around on this thread talking about massive battles are BSing you. The servers were crapping out when they had 3k played on them for stress testing. The most you see on a server is 2k, that might sound like a decent amount, but this is spread over ten continents so you only have a few hundred ppl on each one. This did not work at first since there was no front line and it just ended up to be ppl capping empty bases over and over again. Now the devs solution was to create a "lattice" system where you could only attack a adjacent base. This worked incredibly well since everyone would be concentrated on only a couple places creating the huge battles advertised. Unfortunately the whiners on the board had this modified, they argued this made squad tactics insignificant since the numbers were so high. Apparantley it never occured to anyone that a squad of ten guys should be insignificant on the battlefield and should not be able to cap a base by themselves. So it was changed, they added more links to the bases (some linked halfway across the map) and now its back to smaller scaled combat, and yes there is usually an empty base or two that is linked. So what do we have left? Tribes essentially, the combat is back to squad lvl, there really is no reason to play this game if you already have Tribes 2. The biggest battles you will see now is maybe 100-200 ppl, and keep in mind this is spread out.

Isn't enough substance to the game, I won't be paying for it. Even with some good squads you just don't feel you accomplish anything, I can get the same experience out of BF1942 really, with actual objectives. I'll check out the game in say 6 months after release, the devs are capable, but the game is just missing some sort of drive.

Well actually I only own the original UT, but I can guarantee if Epic does not try to advance their game this time around they will get reamed by reviewers and gamers.

Well as long as they try to make an actual seqeul this time I'm fine with it.

"Hey guys how about we don't update anything except for the graphics and ONE new playmode, and oh yeah we'll take out the best playmode assault"

Well if gamers will put up with that crap I'm sure UT2K4 will be very successful.

Still you have to agree its odd that only one of the guys here praising EVE has posted in other threads. Fanboy/Sony affiliate or not no one can take your opinions seriously for that reason.

Oh and Ur-Quan Master Starcontrol rocks

why do you think they are writing their own engine?

Valve spent years making that engine TF2 is running on, remember a demo of TF2 was sent to ATI awhile ago so they are still using that engine.

Your system Drewbacca, the only problems I've heard of mafia having was on some CDs the AC.dta file wouldn't extract properly. I love mafia and a patch certainly wasn't necessary (why isn't more devs can ship their games in a playable state?) but I am glad they took the time to fix some minor bugs.

"Mining is supposed to be realistic, you cant just click annywhere an expect to start digging. This isnt a "bad interface", but a real life scenario. If you stick with forging you will start to make things; its called patients. You might wana try farming or leathercrafting.

You sound like you play diablo :-/"

Don't excuse ridiculous gameplay, sitting there looking for one spot to click that is a size of a pixel is not exactly what I would call a realistic mining operation. My whole point is the player SHOULD NOT have to go through such a absurd thing to start having fun. Really, would it been so hard to give me a crappy dagger or something for my hours of work? Bah, no lets do it again, and again, and again. Sorry this isn't a way to hook players, I will not play through days of boring crap to start having some fun, there isn't anything new in this game anyway so I'm not missing much.

I played the game in beta for a few days, I could see how it might have a niche audience, wasn't for me though. The interface can be frustrating at times, and development of any other skills beside combat is really, really, really, really DULL!! I though I would work on crafting skill, so I needed some ore (which my class specialized in). You literally park yourself against a rock and click for hours, whats even worse was since the interface was so bad that if you didn't click this exact point on the mountain nothing would happen, this is usually the part where you start pulling hair.

Then maybe once get some ore to craft you haul it to the furnace and attempt to forge something, which will most likely fail, and you get to do it all over again WOOOHOOOO!!!! Yeah, I don't want any of that innovation stuff, give me a game where you do lots of clicking.

If that sounds like you, then you'll have fun with this game.

There might be a good game in there, but I'm not willing to spend the hair pulling hours of lvling to find out.
