News Comments > New Star Wars RTS Game
29. Re: Hate it Jan 3, 2005, 08:27 m00t

This is just on the PC as that's all that's worth playing...
Good Star Wars games:
X-wing and all direct successors (Tie fighter, alliance, etc)
Dark Forces and all it's progeny.

Bad Star Wars games:
Anything that is even remotely inferred to be a "strategy" title.

Mediocre Star Wars games:
Anything that is even remotely inferred to be "adventure"

Now, if they just took the Generals engine from EA, made it a star wars game and added some cool game modes involving jedi, made the maps 10x larger and had space tile sets. I think it'd be a good game.

*cough*it's a _beta_*cough*
Perhaps some of you are too young to remember what that really means.

Unlike sony and Blizzard, some companies still use closed betas to find bugs, not as marketing tools.

But you're probably too fanboyish and newblike to figure that out. You just want free games to play.

False. It is not more secure. Dictionary attacks include those characters in the attack. Try again. A dictionary attack does not mean going through Websters looking for a password. It means going through a precompiled list of all known character combinations of length X. It is computationally prohibitive to do this for long passwords (PasswordCharacterSet^PasswordLength) because you have to store the password and the corresponding hash (for the fun times when you have their .passwd file).

Let's calculate how much disk space it would take to store all possible 5 character passwords (let's pretend we live in an ASCII only world since most software doesn't support unicode passwords). 255^5 = 1078203909375*5 characters to be precise.
However most passwords don't let you have all 255 characters either. It's probably closer to 96 characters. 8153726976*5.
So 37.96875 GB of data. This increases exponentially with each character added. It's good to *allow* as many characters as possible to force people to include them in their dictionary attacks, but having a password that contains them does not necessarily make it more or less secure.

It might keep your little brother out, but not someone who's actually trying.

I recommend a minimum of 8 characters in your password (even using just a-zA-Z and [space] works out to 53^8 or 283.12 TB of combinations minimum.

volkswagen = V0lk5w@g3n

stick with 10+ letter words too.

Except that "V0lk5w@g3n" is in no way more secure than "volkswagen".

The 10+ letters is good advice. Length is the best defense in regards to brute forcing passwords.

Try using pass phrases instead of pass words.
Like, "I drove a volkswagen last week"
It's also easier to remember phrases.

43. Re: lag and crowding Nov 18, 2004, 22:07 m00t

Lag: Well, it is a *STRESS* test. You know, where they try and overload the server to see where it breaks and how? What kind of fucking moron are you if you're playing a STRESS test and complaining that it's laggy? Make note of it, to be sure, but bitching and moaning about lag in a STRESS test is like crying because your poop is brown.

Character Wipes: I think it's a good idea. I think if you don't, you're opening yourself up to a lot of headaches, just from a technical standpoint. It clears up any possibly invalid or bugged items. Starts everyone on a level playing field. And, last but not least, it's a fucking beta. If you have any expectation of keeping anything you're an idiot. Short of the devs saying "Yes, xyz (being you, some people, or everyone) will be able to keep abc (character, items, whatever) guarenteed or your money back." you should expect that all "work" you put in to the game to be lost at ship. Complaining otherwise just demonstrates that you are a freeloading dick that just want to play games for free. I see that a lot. People get in to betas not to help with the quality of the game but just to have a free game. People like that can suck down razor blades and let someone who will actually give back to the game their beta codes.

tell me about it...
At MS we were playing on 3.2ghz P4's with 1gb RAM and 9800's last year and it would barely stay above 35fps at 1024x768.

Gearbox fucked up on this one big time.

70. also, forgot to mention Nov 13, 2004, 14:12 m00t

Pagans loved sex. lots of it. With everyone. They celebrated life. They celebrated fertility. Orgies, homosexuality.

That irks a lot of christians, repressed as they are.

So christians vilified them. tried to portray them as evil.
Seems a little backwards.

It's easier to get people to change their reasons for doing something than it is to change what they are doing.

jesus christ is a fabrication. created to make people hate other people.

Why do christians hate paganism?
Because paganism loves all life and nature. They were at peace with their environment and were generally friendly people. They respected animals and life. That just doesn't sit will with most christians so they associated it with Satan who according to christians is a mean dude. Hence why most people confuse satanism with paganism. Satanism is a different thing for a different post. Satanism isn't about hurting people, but it just wouldn't do for the christians for people to believe that.

Supposedly the bible dictates that there is a 7 day week.
Earth created in 6 days and 7th day off blah blah blahbullshitbullshitbullshit.

Why do christian's take sunday off (or believe to be a day of rest?) Because Constantine the Great declared it to be so! The day of the sun (which celebrates Ra, helios, apollo and other sun gods). Everybody worshipped the sun because (quite obviously) without it we'd all be very cold and not here.

Want to know some neat facts about the other days of the week?
Monday - Mona day! Saxon moon god.
Tuesday - Tiw's Day! Named after Tiw, Norse god.
Wednesday - Woden's Day! Named after Odin, Norse god (Odin is the modern English spelling, used to be Woden)
Thursday - Thor's day! Named after Thor, Norse god.
Friday - Named after Freya, Norse god.
Saturday - Named after saturn. Crazy greeks!
At least in english. Most asian languages have relations to the planets or just numerical.

Basically the bible is made up. Some of the tales may have a degree of truth in their basis, but largely it's all bullshit. 7 day weeks were around before the bible and before "christ". Demonstrably in Rome.

The bible was written to impose beliefs and took what people already knew and were already doing and distorted it to be used for the bible writers' agenda (or whoever was comissioning the writing of it such as King James, what a bastard).

As for the whole jewish conspiracy or whatever, I doubt it in general.
However, the whole pouring of tax payer dollars in to israel irks me. They're a nuclear power and destabilize the middle east region. They're volatile and generally trouble makers. That said, I'm glad arafat's dead because I can't really be comfortable about people who had nazi ties as closely as his. (Several nazi's fled to the middle east after WWII and arafat's family had close ties to one of them). They're all a bunch of bastards and they should just stfu and live peacefully because they're fighting over a bunch of made up bullshit.

Let's not forget that "christian" holidays are based on pagan rituals and celebrations.

Easter? Spring Equinox celebration (fertility celebration)
Christmas? Celebration of the birth of the sun god Mithra (Roman). Pre "Christ"

The Cross? Rip off of the Ankh which is an egyptian symbol of fertility.

Some things the christians would like people to forget so they can pretend to be original or something.

Basically, most modern religions are rip-offs of previous ones. They're just used to get power and enforce garbage beliefs on people.

I don't understand why CoH doesn't take more aggressive actions against people who are obviously making clones of characters. Parody is one thing but Wulverine that looks exactly like the real thing (or as close an approximation as you can get in CoH) really ought to go. When I played I sent reports to the CSRs regarding such players and they were never dealt with. They were always there, day after day like they were some sort of original character.

Yes, 17 was pretty tough for me but then I noticed where I went wrong.

I forgot that you could hit the side of the exits to stop yourself. The exit you're going for is the one on the right.
