2k4 is damn fun, 2k3 was a chore, this coming from a clanner from UT.

2k4, if you have good players, every gametype is fun. great game. I agree about the fragmentation of the player base though. so many modes, everyone chooses their own thing, but i guess it brings in more players overall to buy the game, online i dont think it helps. who knows.

graphx were fine, sound definitely not the best..tried playing with settings, couldn't get it any better. Can't tell when you're pushing the limit on pro mode, just jumps sideways randomly. No squealing, also, no rear view mirrors, have a rear looking camera that you can switch to, but then u cant see front, but only way to tell if someone's close to you is this wacky red arrow dancing around the bottom of the screen, no engine noise from other cars, can't tell when you're locking up wheels, either graphically in the formula fords or otherwise, no squealing, no scratching, no nothing.
I wanted to like it, had decent fun playing online for 1.5 hrs, and its kind of fun, but handling is bizarre on pro-mode. this is coming from grand prix legends and nascar2003 running with wheel and pedals

I thought the same thing about the marketing speak, its like they handed out the wrong press release...btw Hitman 2 was kick-ass, more of the same would be fine by me, but sounds like they made it better, screens look tight, i'm excited

I thought it was fun, lots of different ways to play, seems like everything was interactive, actually finished this demo, unlike first deus ex. UI is unintuitive, but I got the hang of it. Weird thing is everytime i died or moved from one location to another it totally lost all my movement configuration customization. Fortunately there's not that many keys to customize, but still, wtf?

did play like a slideshow though, dunno whats up with that, except my comp's old, but it runs ut2k3 just fine. Whatever, i wasn't impressed at first, but this demo's making me reconsider buying this. First Deus ex did nothing for me, this one's fun. Go figure, but thats my opinion.

"the need to be online to play single player if a prior online access was made"

I wasn't aware of that..
That'll *really* piss me off if my network goes down (like it does occasionally) and I'll be cut off from playing **single-player** as well as multiplayer...grrrr. Net access is not exactly ubiquitous or, need i say it, 100% reliable.

hehe yeah the menus are a bitch, i finally just kept pressing enter repeatedly and it runs you through some bizarre series of events. If you keep continuing after every race you get to race every type of car available in the game.

basically the way the menus work is each time you press "enter" you get a new batch of options above the current selection
So, you move down the tree until you get to go drive something, and with each "enter" there's options that are configurable for that step.

So yeah, its confusing, especially since many of the options are blocked due to the demo status of the game. Also instead of escape key getting you out of each option screen, its the Backspace key, and "delete" key to change options...bizarre.

worth it, though configuration is a bitch, but once you get that down there's a variety of cars, from an old 300sl gullwing to whatever that new roadster is, to some mercedes SUV i've never seen before (which you drive off-road) And the unique thing about it is its like Grand theft Auto, in that all the tracks that you race on are based in one environment, in this case the Alps. See a castle up in the mountains in the distance? Get the SUV, crisscross mountain roads through tunnels over hills, through alpine meadows and forests till you get there. You can easily drive around for an hour and not hit the same road twice. Good looking game too, though really you should be using a wheel to get the most out of it.

surprised to hear people think ut2003 is too fast, if anything i thought it was too slow, but then again, i'm not coming from counter-strike. The fun factor was definitely missing from ut2k3, mostly cause it sucks worse to be a noob in ut2k3 than it did in ut. less powerful weapons cut down on lucky kills..etc.
btw, whomever it was that was going to buy em both in the bargain bin for $20 each, its looking like you could just buy 2k4 when it comes out and get the same thing..

nobody'd be bitching about the chainsaw if it hadn't been done...what...in every FPS game made since doom 1? They'd be like..CHAINSAW?? WOW WHAT A GREAT IDEA NOBODY'S EVER DONE THAT BEFORE I CANT WAIT TO CHOP CHOP CHOP YEEHAWWW!!! The argument that it worked in doom 1 so it should work now doesn't hold water..wasn't doom 1 x-axis only? Seriously id, what do i pay you for anyway...I had one simple request..a chainsaw with frickin lasers attached to it...

wasrad is on the right path...a little bit of creativity goes a long way.

By the way this thread has probably been the most entertaining pointless thread I've read here. Actual humor with the bitching...what a concept.

"You are awakened in the future. Several of the characters from [the original game] are back, including Barney the security guard, the G-Man, about whom you learn more and in whose employ you now are."

anyone else think this is a little weird? does that mean gordo got cryogenically frozen after original half-life, along with the g-man and barney? I guess that frees them up to do the post-apocalyptic-future-city-rising-from-the-past- type scenario, which....well, what the hell, why not go where so many have gone before...

my 4400 won't run the last test in 3dmark03, same way my gf2 wouldn't run the nature test in 3dmark02. So anything that won't run it gets the points only from the tests it WILL run. Right?

I think the last test is only with pixel shader 2.0 compliant cards. i.e. radeon 95-9700's... or gfFX's, which aren't really out yet. Or am i talkin outta my ass?

Oh yeah, all the 2nd and 3rd parts of the "demo" do is flash on black screens, can't see any graphics except for "3dmark" in the top right corner. Kinda weird.

as to "procedural" stories, this link, i think on blues the other day...has stories that generate themselves, to make games that "will be less like scenes from a film and more like a reactive and interactive world that players can explore almost endlessly. "
the prototype uses the unreal engine. here's the link:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/2708995.stm

This reminded me somewhat of the idea presented in the book "Ender's Game"..and others I'm sure.
