Longest running MMO?

Isn't Ultima Online still active? If so, it would be going on 14 years.

News Comments > Two Worlds II Review Flap, Sequel Revealed
29. Re: Two Worlds II Review Flap, Sequel Revealed Feb 20, 2011, 13:21 Blackhawk

In an industry where reviews are one to four stars, one to five stars, 1-10, 1-100, positive versus negative, three tentacles up and a dozen other quirky variants it is pointless to use the word 'standards'. Reviewers don't have an industry defined 'standard'.

In the absence of actual standards, common usage and common understanding become the defacto standard. The common understanding is that 70% is an average to mediocre game and 50% is a poor game.

If one or two media outlets want to go against the common understanding as a way of waving some idealistic banner, that's fine. They can be idealists. They should, however, realize that their scores don't match the rest of the system that they'll be measured against, which makes those scores irrelevant. They're the +/- x% variation that should be ignored.

Either they needed a large number of categories to facilitate the voting process, or (more likely) they wanted the categories to ensure that they were presenting a broad base of examples, with some from every era from every platform.

If they were doing traditional art, they might divide it by era and medium (sculpture, pastels, oil, etc.) so that the exhibit would show a little of each, even if it meant that some good examples from one of the common mediums got missed.

While I have plenty of confidence in him (I love a lot of his other stuff, too), it has to suck facing the expectations of fans looking for the "Still Alive" follow-up.

I do believe you're thinking of CoD: Black Ops.

News Comments > Crytek on PCs versus Consoles
24. Re: Crytek on PCs versus Consoles Nov 25, 2010, 16:53 Blackhawk

It doesn't help that most of the sales are around $40 - $60 versus "I'll wait until its under 20", which has become the standard PC buying philosophy. Most PC games seem to hit bargain bin prices while console titles released at the same time are still at close to full price.

I'm not criticizing - as a consumer, it is our job to spend as little as possible for the products we buy. As the manufacturer, though, it is your job to sell the products in such a way as to make the most money. That's what a business is, and a game developer or publisher is a business first and foremost, not a foundation for the arts.

$.10?! Oh wow, either this is the deal of the century or someone really fucked up at the GfWL HQs

...or marketing is using an older, but still appealing title to try to introduce more people to the GFW market system right before the holiday sales start. They lose a bit of bandwidth in exchange for a larger installed market with active accounts just before the busiest shopping season.

In other words, this is your free sample baggy.

Ya know, there are lots of reasons not to like HAWX 2. Not being a flight sim isn't one of them. It's an arcade game. It's like complaining that Call of Duty isn't a realistic infantry simulator. That's not its purpose or intent.

The new class/race combos will be available to everyone on the Cataclysm launch (when they release patch 4.0.3), but the new races will only be available to owners of Cataclysm.

News Comments > On Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Consoles
22. Re: On Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Consoles Sep 12, 2010, 15:03 Blackhawk

I haven't played the game, so I can't really say how it is, but I can say that they're misinterpreting the problem PC gamers have.

Back in the '90s, games on the two platforms were very different, but I think these days it's all about bringing things together [...] I see it as convergence, and it's the same for games.

Sure, granted. PC games and console games started out with two completely different styles of gameplay, and lately they've been converging. That much is true.

The problem is that they aren't converging in the middle. 'Convergence' suggests that you should be getting games that are 50% PC style and 50% console style. People are pissed off because they're getting 15% PC and 85% console. The console market dominance has been so strong that it has been the style to set the standard, and PC gamers have had all their favorite, long established series redesigned to fit that standard.

It sucks when you support the Rainbow Six series (as an obvious example) for years, then see it turned into a shallow third person cover, health regenerating, simplified orders action game. Even when the changes aren't that extreme, any time a console/PC style choice is binary, the console option is the one that is chosen.

Any gameplay that can be achieved on a ten button pad can be achieved on a 100+ key keyboard. Any interface that will work on a standard definition TV will work on a 1680x1050 monitor. The reverse is not true. You can't put complex key combinations that work on keyboards onto a gamepad. You can't make detailed text that works fine on a monitor work on at TV. That means that when they 'converge', it has to be designed for the more limited system. That means the console.

Medal of Honor folks: Stop trying to explain your decisions. Every time you do, it comes across as ridiculous. Remember when you tried to explain the lack of blood way back in Allied Assault? You said that, historically, the enemies' uniforms in WWII were so thick that they didn't bleed when shot.

Rabble rousers will always be rabble rousers. Stop trying to explain. It doesn't work.

Consider that every time a dev or publisher registers a single domain, all sorts of silly speculation follows. This could just be the PR department disguising the real URL in a pile of meaningless ones, allowing them to announce whatever they're doing in their own time.

The nvidia stuff REQUIRES a "3D Vision-Ready" 120Hz HD LCD monitor to use 3d, plus a $200 set of shutter glasses.

So you are talking a number of thousands of dollars to get this working. Thats why I think the 3d thing is kinda silly. But I do like the idea of the surround multi monitor thing.

What was previously posted was referring to this: Nvidia 3d Vision Discover, which will let any halfway modern PC with recent drivers create an anaglyph red/blue 3d image from hundreds of games on the fly. All you need is a set of generic red/blue glasses.
