| Microsoft knows that GFW has been a failure. They're taking the parts of it that they can't get rid of and merging it with an existing service, which will probably be followed by a phasing out of the other portions of the service. |

[mouse folks] figures you’ve got 5 fingers, so your mouse should have five inputs. I haven't had a gaming mouse with less than five inputs in probably a decade, most with several inputs per finger, save for the pinky, which is fairly vital as a guide for precision movements. |

I don't even notice anymore. The days when demos were standard are long gone. Demos for most titles are the exception rather than the rule now.
Instead, I wait and read reviews, read comments from people who've played it and so on.
After all, there were plenty of demos release where that one level was polished to hell and back, but the rest of the game stank, sort of like a great trailer for a crappy movie. |

Even that isn't behind store policies in these cases. If an employee who isn't trained in restraining someone does so and injures them on the store's behalf, the store is liable. If the employee tackled the guy and one of the laptops spun off and struck another customer, the store is liable for that.
Furthermore, if you don't specifically prohibit your employees from taking action and they do and injure themselves, they can claim that you failed to train them for that eventuality, and the store is liable for that.
A $1600 theft is an inconvenience, as the store would have to fill out insurance paperwork to get their money back. Stopping a $1600 theft could cost the store hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Hell, it costs the average business thousands of dollars just to prosecute a shoplifter, and once an employee physically stops them, they don't have any choice. |

Two problems with these kinds of 'tricks':
One, when your copy protection is so fidgety that it mistakes legitimate copies as pirated copies and destroys your saves hours in (I'm looking at you, Operation Flashpoint.)
Two, if 30% of the copies out there in the world are pirated and you add a funny but not obvious 'broken' bug (OpFlash, Batman), then 30% of the community will see your game as seriously flawed. Reviews, word of mouth, the IP's reputation, the developer's reputation and the publisher's reputation can all take a hit from 30% of the gaming world talking about how unstable, buggy or unplayable your game is. You're better off just going with something obvious (Pirate Jail), or better yet, a standard 'insert proper disk' message. |

This reminds me of the famous Deus Ex "can't get on the boat" bug that only cracked copies had. Whenever someone would hop on a forum and ask why they couldn't get on the boat in New York, everyone would gather around, laugh, heckle, and throw stones.
As to intentionally adding bugs to pirated copies: It works, but it has a drawback. If 30% of your forum is complaining about piracy bugs, then 30% of your word of mouth advertising and reputation will be about buggy products. That ends up hurting the developer as much as the pirates. |

In an industry where reviews are one to four stars, one to five stars, 1-10, 1-100, positive versus negative, three tentacles up and a dozen other quirky variants it is pointless to use the word 'standards'. Reviewers don't have an industry defined 'standard'.
In the absence of actual standards, common usage and common understanding become the defacto standard. The common understanding is that 70% is an average to mediocre game and 50% is a poor game.
If one or two media outlets want to go against the common understanding as a way of waving some idealistic banner, that's fine. They can be idealists. They should, however, realize that their scores don't match the rest of the system that they'll be measured against, which makes those scores irrelevant. They're the +/- x% variation that should be ignored. |

Either they needed a large number of categories to facilitate the voting process, or (more likely) they wanted the categories to ensure that they were presenting a broad base of examples, with some from every era from every platform.
If they were doing traditional art, they might divide it by era and medium (sculpture, pastels, oil, etc.) so that the exhibit would show a little of each, even if it meant that some good examples from one of the common mediums got missed. |

| While I have plenty of confidence in him (I love a lot of his other stuff, too), it has to suck facing the expectations of fans looking for the "Still Alive" follow-up. |

It doesn't help that most of the sales are around $40 - $60 versus "I'll wait until its under 20", which has become the standard PC buying philosophy. Most PC games seem to hit bargain bin prices while console titles released at the same time are still at close to full price.
I'm not criticizing - as a consumer, it is our job to spend as little as possible for the products we buy. As the manufacturer, though, it is your job to sell the products in such a way as to make the most money. That's what a business is, and a game developer or publisher is a business first and foremost, not a foundation for the arts. |
