News Comments > "No Plans" for Max Payne 3 Demo
5. Re: "No Plans" for Max Payne 3 Demo Apr 9, 2012, 21:24 Blackhawk

There have been three periods of demos. The 90s through the early 2000s were the era of the free demo. Every game had one, and they begged people to try them out as a way to introduce their new game to the public.

The mid 2000s saw the worst trend - demos used as incentives. This period saw companies offering access to demos as incentives to pre-order, as rewards for registering and so on. Instead of them trying to get us to play their demos, they actually had gamers essentially paying to be advertised to.

The last four or five years, though, has seen the demise of the demo. They are the exception rather than the rule, unless you're talking indie. For mainstream titles it is more remarkable when there IS a demo than when there isn't. 'No demo' is the default answer these days.

It's not seemingly, it's statistically, and yeah, you've ignored your core base for far too long.

PC users haven't been anything like their core for a long, long time. We are a small fraction of their sales, and therefore not a priority.

38. Re: Beamdog on Possible Baldur's Gate III Kickstart Mar 19, 2012, 15:59 Blackhawk

Nobody said they had to give up all the rights. They can just enter into a publisher/developer contract. The publisher maintains the IP rights and a small degree of veto power over how it is used, while the developer has otherwise full creative rights and provides the funding. Interplay is out zero and has potential profit, Beamdog gets rights to the IP. Win/win.

The problem, again, is WotC. I don't know that a 2nd edition game is going to sell these days. They might be able to leverage access to the 5th edition rights on the basis of cross advertising, which Wizards desperately needs right now.

Then again, they could just get rights to the rebuilt engine, license the Pathfinder rules and setting for a song and make Golarion's Gate. Given that Pathfinder has been overtaking D&D as the RPG industry leader, their lack of any game presence might make them willing to deal.

I'm curious how you're going to Kickstart an IP that belongs to a publisher.

Easy. You don't take them out of the loop. You tell them that they let you use the IP (assuming you've proven yourself with it on the EEs), and that you will finance the project yourself, but that they continue to get their cut. Since it the IP hasn't been doing much, it is a no-lose for the publisher as it is potential profit at zero financial risk, and the developer gains access to the publishers press, retail and advertising resources.

you do know that this is a VIDEO GAME, right?

its not real, its not supposed to be real

its about elves and wizards and dragons.. its not about your pathetic idea of "immersion"

What do any of those things have to do with the quality of immersion?

Heh. I have yet to see a countdown like that that didn't end up with a server crash.

What you worked on has more to do with the opportunities you were presented with than with your abilities or knowledge. How many games like he's describing actually exist? The R6 series, part of the SWAT series, ARMA, OpFlash: CWC - possibly the original Ghost Recon - what else?

There haven't been that many opportunities to get this type of game on your resume.

I like World of Tanks.

I have yet to figure out what about it makes in an "MMO", though.

The trailer is a fake. It is a fan trailer made at least a year ago, and originally posted here.

Between the changes to WoW's mechanics to make gold farming less appealing and the introduction and widespread adoption of authenticators on accounts, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find that the number of customer support issues has dropped dramatically over the last few years, significantly enough to require less staff to handle them.

We did do every possible quest, and all of the DLC, but didn't beat the final boss because it required a 2nd play through to level up enough to take it on.

Had you done a second playthrough, you'd have discovered that the boss had leveled up right along with you.

WoW is losing subscribers, but it is still the single largest money maker the company has. They aren't going to fiddle with that too much.

Paintings of mechs that have been around for more than a quarter of a century isn't what I would really call 'concept art.'

Yeah, far be it from us to expect the co-founder and managing director of Valve to know the details of his own business.

We live in a society where even lawyers have to specialize in a narrow branch of the law to gain an even basic understanding of it. There is absolutely no reason to expect a 'managing director' to understand the thousands of subtle legal quirks related to a company. That's why corporations have packs of expensive attorneys - to tell the directors how things work when they have need of a specific piece of information.

What the fuck was that shit? What the fuck is with these mech devs not releasing real media of their games? In the words of Mr. Garrison they can just suck my balls.

They haven't even made an announcement yet. This is like complaining that an announcement of an upcoming trailer didn't include the trailer.

There's nothing wrong with the way they're doing it. I was just hoping for something a little different.

I've gotten tired of twitch action multiplayer shooters. I was hoping for something where seeing an enemy meant fighting back and forth with them, as opposed to a contest over who has the quicker clicker.

I like the idea, and I like the look, but it looks a little too twitchy. It doesn't seem to have the lumbering, walking tank feel, or the careful maneuvering that mech games are known for. It looks almost like Quake with a cockpit.
