Wouldn't it be more likely to be Episode 3, rather than HL3? I haven't heard anything about there not being a final 'episode'.

Also, I'm confused by the PC Gamer tweet (the article it relates to is here). They say that one aspect of it is a hoax but don't mention the parts that appeared in the official Valve/Wheatley video.

Regardless, Wheatley is a pooter and therefore '111' would be binary. In binary, 111 is 7. If you take the Valve-produced Half-Life story games, you get HL1, HL2, HL2: Ep1, HL2: Ep2, Portal 1, and Portal 2. That's six games, so the next one would be seventh. Ooooh....

Yup, the surround sound problem is a pig. I've just taken to wearing my headphones whenever I play it now, but it still grates.

I don't know about the US, but in the UK the cheapest way to get this is to buy Trackmania United for £5 then patch it to TMUF for free. Might be possible in America too. If not, buy it anyway because it's brilliant.

I think the site looks quite good like this. Surprised how well blue and gold go together.

This game is too linear, it feels like you're on rails.

Bravo!

Whistles get blown during normal football (I'm not going to call it...you know) games here as well. I've always wondered how the players never seem to notice them but respond instantly to the ref's whistle.

If they wanted to take conc jumping out of the equation, why didn't they just make conc grenades not have the effect of propelling a player up a lift shaft or halfway across a map?
I'm all for removal of grenades personally - I don't know what it was like in TFC, but in QWTF there were certain maps ('Bases' for one) where gren spam - especially the nail gren - just spoilt things.

Does anyone remember the old school previews, pictures, promises, when TF2 was first mentioned?
I for one am a little upset that the release is going to be NOTHING, even remotely, like the game was promised.

Are you talking about the previews way back when (I think it was pre-TFC), where it was going to be a much more realistic war-type sim? I'm glad they dropped that idea - there are plenty of those type of games. I want to go back to the fun, balls-out gameplay that TF offered - I enjoyed QWTF so much that I'm glad TF2 is coming out so there'll actually be people playing it again.
The very old timers will remember 2sphinx6 and spazball. Ridiculous, different and very very fun - that's what I'm looking forward to.

Weren't the invisible spies just in one of the TF variants, like TFC, MegaTF, OzTF or something? I don't remember ever seeing it in vanilla QWTF.

An update of the old formula? Visually, sure. But there was not ONE SINGLE THING in that video that was not present in the original TF.

Good! Why try to improve on perfection? Though I seem to remember Robin Walker saying a few years back that mod makers should stop making so many TF clones. And yet here we are.

I just hope the physics are more like TF than TFC.

Agreed.

It's the over the top gameplay mechanics that hurt TF too, a high learning curve.

TF had a fairly simple premise (glorified CTF mostly), so the learning curve wasn't too high on that front. If you just played as soldier for your first few games you'd pick up the basics fairly quickly and still have fun. Then you could start with the different classes, gren timers, conc jumping, all those extra tricks.

Way too early to judge something like this though. We don't know anything about what they're doing to the game BESIDES the graphics upgrade, and considering they have at least a couple of the original creators on board, I'm optimistic they'll want to evolve the gameplay a bit.

That said, I (personally) don't really care much if they don't feel like messing with perfection Shit, they could call it Tomb Raider II for all I care!

I think Robin Cook and John Walker (or Robin Walker and John Cook, I always forget which way round it goes) were the only two creators of TF, both of whom are with Valve. Actually there may have been a third, but me memory's fuzzy. Anyway, you're quite right about the perfection...TF provided me with some gaming moments which haven't been surpassed since I stopped playing (thanks to bunnyhopping (which I could never master) and the source code release). None of the subsequent clones have really come close to matching it. Let's hope this one does.

Valve could've done it much better than the pedestrian, arcadish, ho-hum gameplay of Battlefield.

Well I agree that it shouldnt be pedestrian and ho-hum, but I'm hoping TF2 is more of an arcade experience than a proper warlike sim. We have too many games based on realism as it is and, while they certainly do have their place, I'd like to see some of the fun aspect put back into FPS mods like back in the Quake days. Catch the Chicken anyone?

I recently read that Jobs is a total jackass in person. Some ex-employees spilled the beans and the picture they draw isn't the chrome-plated sunshine Apple would have you believe.

Have a read of Robert X Cringley's Accidental Empires. Doesn't give a very flattering view of Steve at all (or, in the interests of fairness, virtually any successful person in the IT industry).

The show deals with Roy, Moss and Jen, who make up the IT department of Reynholm Industries

Reynholm? Sounds familiar...

(I'm clearly in the key demographic for this show)

Yup, there's been no game like QWTF since. AQ2, Counterstrike, and Q3F provided brief distractions, but I always returned to QWTF. And still do today. God bless 2 Forts.
