I wouldn't call those images "fantastic". They look kinda slapped together and rushed. Mildly interesting, but not fantastic. I've seen much better stuff from first year art students.

Think of it this way, if the game had sold well we would have multiple DLC releases by now. That's precisely what they promised before the game launched.

Considering how many years and millions of dollars they poured into development and marketing... it was a disaster.

kidding, but man did that dayz mod pump some money their way or what?

And how! It's not just Arma 3 that will be influenced by this. Developers and publishers everywhere will be reconsidering the merits of allowing modding and by extension, doing a decent PC version. Day Z isn't going to rewrite the gaming word but it's a nice boost.

I'm thinking it's more likely we will see a fucking ton of Day Z copycat games in the years to come.

What new updates?

Many of the maps have been reworked. A few were supposedly removed but I honestly don't notice and I own the original CD version. Level scripting is redone so you don't have to kill certain badguys to move on. I know you can quickly skip through some levels because they opened things up more. Certain weapons are available earlier. The rune powers are redone and switched around. The new enemies from the PS2 port (skeletons, hell hounds, and frost giants) are in the game now. There's a new autosave feature which was more necessary than I ever expected.

It's still a great game and comes with the expansion and new updates. Also keep in mind buying Rune Classic will help fund the long awaited sequel. And it's on sale now until the 20th.

No matter how bad Rage was they still make more money on it than on licensing.

Considering they announced they wouldn't be licensing anymore starting with id Tech 5, that's not surprising.

(Happened after Zenimax bought them.)

Yeah, and they announced that because no one was going to license from them, so it looks better to say "oh, no one uses this because we didn't make it available" instead of "oh, no one uses this because no one wanted it."

It's not so much nobody wanted to license from them but John Carmack deliberately prices their tech so high because he was never interested in licensing in the first place.

The difference was that people assumed DNF was going to be a turkey. RAGE was actually portrayed as a good game, yet upon release it became clear that id Software had actually lied to gamers.

Remember this? http://icrontic.com/article/why-id-softwares-rage-is-going-to-suck

It's fun going back and reading the stuff people said when these games were about to come out. So many people look like stupid assholes today, especially the DNF/Rage defenders who dominated websites and forums early on. A one year retrospective on the DNF community is hilarious.

What. The. Fuck. That is probably the most inane comparison that can be made.

It's only "inane" if you're a fucking retard and didn't closely follow Rage and DNF throughout release. Both games suffered from consolization. Both games were patched with the sole purpose of stopping PC gamers from making modifications or accessing the ingame cvars/console commands. Both were hugely overhyped and flopped miserably. Both games had the developers previewing user-friendly mod tools years before they were in stores. The singleplayer portions are rehashed watered down versions of what was done before, and multiplayer was tacked on in the last minute. Rage and DNF are practically twin brothers.

You know what's really pathetic? DNF still had two DLC packs and more patch support than Rage.

Am I the only one who enjoyed Rage? I think it was the best single player shooter of 2011. The textures were blurry, but in overall, beautiful. The enemy animations were near perfect, the weapons rocked, NPCs looked great. The plot was pretty lame, the pseudo-non-linearity and RPG elements were kind of forced... but it was a lot of fun anyway. And constant 60fps was mindblowing with latency-free vsync.

I like the technology behind id Tech 5 but it's kind of obvious the PC version sucked because of consoles. And I don't mean consoles are bad, just that the PC version could have been a bit better.

This is how I felt about Rage. The gameplay mechanics were good, and when it was possible to edit config files making the game harder and more interesting it was a solid shooter all around. But subsequent patching locking down cvars and all the other problems weighed it down too much. At the end Rage isn't any better (or worse) than DNF. 2011 was the year of blockbuster disappointments. The final nail in the coffin was the lack of promised mod support.

Here's a thread I made on the Steam forums explaining some of the things you could do before id software decided to lock us out of the game with a single patch: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2166471

It's actually amazing that ID pushes their engine like the second coming but still has some of the most craptastically broken physics in the industry and not only managed to make one of the ugliest AAA game this decade but also managed to take 4 steps back in engine technology, No dynamic light, no HDR, no deformable terrain/destruction, low res textures.

That is just... hilarious

I get an uncomfortably AvP3 "stealth kill" quicktime events vibe from this. Looking very console. Awesome art design and setting, though. Need a better explanation of how melee combat works from an outside source before I get excited.

If they are using the Witcher 2 engine for this game, then I imagine that it won't be point and click.

Did IQ's drop suddenly around here? Obviously it's not going to be point and click. The point is Westwood's Blade Runner nailed the look and did the whole choices and consequences far better than 99% of actual RPG's. It even had a dozen endings and character randomization few can touch. Do that from the full RPG perspective and it will be amazing.

Go play the game now.

Oh come on. Whilst the flavour of the Westwood game was spot on, it was pretty far from perfect.

Explain. I've played just about every point and click adventure game ever made and Blade Runner remains near the top. Its only glaring weakness was the clunky shooting mechanics. But of course this being the internet there's always somebody who has to start an argument.
