Like any serious gamers really care what movie critics think of "games". It's not their specialty. Stick to movies. Some people just don't like games, and don't get into them.

This would be awesome if it does get ported well. That game is one of the main reasons I bought a Dreamcast.

So... do we still think they are not trying to compete with Steam? Why wouldn't some one want to compete? The digital download service is a growing market with lots of money to be made.

Actually, I've had similar delays myself. It might be related to the internet connection but if it doesn't launch instantly I've had quite a few occasions where it can take 30+ secs. Whereas if I simply restart the Steam client in Offline mode it launches instantly. If it's instant in Offline mode it should be the same online.

Huh sounds logical. Maybe I have just been assimilated to my wait time and don't notice it as much heh.

I wish review sites would use a bit of muscle to get Valve to improve Steam.
Nothing pisses me off more that sitting down to play a singleplayer game than Steam popping saying 'preparing to launch ...' for 2 minutes before either running the damn game or failing!! ( it's about 50/50 these days )
I wouldn't mind but the two most common games I play I used the pirate-try-and-buy approach(since demos where not available) - both games I loved so bought the legal versions at a retail store - now I have suffer steam!!!
Developers wonder why people pirate games, here's a clue:

Illegal version, download, unzip, doubleclick game.exe - play

Legal version, insert DVD, hit install, wait for steam to sign in ( two attempts ) then steam starts downloading FULL game, despite the fact I have the full game on a shiny new legal DVD in the drive!, cancel steam download, google "how the 'f*&k do I install X game from DVD rather than Steam trying to download' close down steam, open a DOS prompt, run steam with some long command line args, wait for install to finish, close down steam, re load steam normally, sign in again( busy please try in a couple of minutes ) F&*K You steam - try again, I'm in, Game updating, 30mins later, game ready, click play game, 'preparing to launch game' 2 minutes later game starts, hit Play on games own launcher, play game ...
PS: I didn't make any of that up, that's what actually happened a couple of weeks ago when I bought Skyrim on DVD from my local super market. Other game was not quiet as bad, at least it installed from DVD into steam.

2 minutes on preparing to load eh? Older machine maybe? Mine is a bit older and I don't even wait that long.

I can't even remember the last time I bought a game at the store and used a DVD / CD. However, those who do have to go through that bit of tripe with the steam download / install on a disk sounds frustrating.

You won't beat steam EA. Give it up.

Gawd. They're not even trying to. Anyone with half a brain, i.e. not you, should be able to tell that EA's Origin service is not even trying to compete with Steam. EA is only using Origin to control their own content on the PC platform. They do not even intend to sell other publisher's games or broaden the spectrum of Origin beyond their own stuff.
I'm also sure that they don't really give much of a fuck about Steam or their own Origin service even. It's a fun little side endeavor for them. They are making 90%+ of their revenue on the consoles. If you think they really care about Steam you had better think again.

I love the name callers here. Always a great way to get a point across.

People who work overtime without getting paid for it, are stupid.

By your logic, all those movies you like watching with their cool effects, all those games you like playing, the majority of visual media you see - it's all created by stupid people.

I know I woulnd't do it. Nothing is that important. If it is umportant enough for me to work, you will pay me for it.
That was a part of the whole EA employee issues as I recall. My understanding is that many salaried programming positions don't have overtime, so they get hit hard in crunch time. The companies that know better usually follow crunch time with extensive vacation. I heard that EA started just throwing employees directly into another crunch time, constant 90+ hour work weeks with no overtime tends to suck.

The whole crunch time issue is also a big part of what changed valve's development philosophy from what I remember.

Indeed it was. Here is roughly what was happening. As we know they were upset over no compensation of some sort for working more than 40 hours a week. EA justified this by stating game developers were "Specialized" employees / contractors. This isn't really true anymore. At least that's what the courts must of decided. In CA apparently as a specialist you can (or could?) be asked to work OT and not be compensated.

This whole thing from what I understand had the laws changed there. It also made EA decide to switch most everyone but management to hourly pay and OT having to be authorized. That's pretty much how it was at Mythic once they were bought by EA.

What they had was good - the Greenskin campaigns are still my fave of any MMO to date - but not ner enough content for launch. It just got way too repetitive to fast with the PvP grind.

Well... PvP "was" the focus of the game. Lacking content or not, a PvP grind was the intention.

The game was doing well until EA bought up Mythic. Then things changed. As usual.

Warhammer is the goofiest game I have ever seen. Looks so fucking dumb, and not sure why Relic keeps working on it over and over and over without revamping and moving forward with Homeworld and CoD.

Not sure if serious.... or really has no idea what company works on what IP.

I am pretty mild in getting involved in competitions. Some I do, some I don't. I also know I may win some, but most likely will lose some. So with this event I spent a little effort at the end but only ended up with 14 items in the inventory and 5 coals? However, I won Saints Row the Third just for doing something in Orcs Must Die. So I won. Got lucky. I guess people don't think of this like Vegas where as we should all well know the Casino always comes out winning.

I don't really believe in resolutions... because nobody really keeps them anyway. They make too many outlandish resolutions that, if you haven't come close to doing it anyway, then promising you will (with some liquor in you) isn't going to happen.

On occasion I have made vague ones: like I'll try to do THIS more, or THAT less. Those are relatively easy to keep, partially because I've been considering them for a while and already started the ball rolling.

To me, it seems silly to base changes on a calendar date. You can make changes any day you want, and if people need a certain day or the year to prod them into it (and that's their BEST reason), I don't see them lasting.

This, and what a couple others have said.

Actually redoing the series in 1st person, but keeping it turn-based wouldn't be a totally bad idea... if they could keep it like the upcoming Legend of Grimlock game, which is a modern Wizardry clone.

http://www.grimrock.net/2011/11/28/beta/

Reminds me more of Eye of The Beholder series heh. Either way LoG looks sweet.

If I recall... some folks at EA find UO2 to be destined to failure by "curse" lol.
