Wow, that kind of screws those of us who live out in the country, where cable isn't available. I'm a huge Silent Hunter fan, and the other days' news of Silent Hunter 5 was the best I've had in a while, but this means I'll have to be dialed up on my 56k to play? Gahh. No way.

Good stuff all around. The fixes for the texture hacks, particularly. More and more, it was becoming obvious when people had those running on a map.

It's kind of ridiculous that for some people, anything short of absolutely steamrolling the other team is enough to send them looking for another game.

Can anyone tell me a single hit turn-based action RPG to come out since Jagged Alliance 2 (which arguably wasn't even a hit?) These are my favorite style of game, and I can't think of a single one.

Silent Storm. It was all kinds of awesome, some years back.

Interesting. This almost looks like a Battlefront version of Hearts of Iron.

This demo is giving me some serious problems. It locks up when you zoom in too close to one of the Strykers in motion, and will randomly bug out and teleport all the vehicles into a corner where they attempt to drive off the map. Anyone else getting weirdness like this?

Jagged Alliance was an awesome series. Hopefully this one goes through, and doesn't have another false start as has happened before.

A 3D engine? I wonder how similar it'll be to Silent Storm, which was another great game that had awesome potential, but just never seemed to go anywhere.

News Comments > WWII Battle Tanks: T-34 vs. Tiger Announced
7. Re: View Apr 25, 2006, 02:11 ShakyJake

Tigers have crap turn speed and were weak against late-war Soviet tanks. Look it up people.

The Tiger was purportedly quite a nimble machine for its size and tonnage, comparable to much smaller tanks. The transmission and steering system were apparently much easier to operate, if not completely reliable. It was also capable of pivoting in place, which many other tanks could not do. It wasn't a slow lumbering beast like it's usually made out to be.

And as for opponents, it positively butchered T-34's when it arrived on the battlefield. Soviet tanks got bigger, but then so did German armor. Soviet vehicles like the IS series may have eventually outclassed the Tiger, but by then there were other German tanks that made the original Tiger look like a kitten.

If the game is based on realistic performance, it might make for an interesting simulator. But it seems that as much as they throw "realistic" around in the pitch, it's mostly over physics, handling, etc, and not actual capability. Gameplay concessions may have been made.

Have you tried turning all the settings up, Ant? The graphics are actually quite nice once you enable all the bells and whistles. Or at least, compared to when I first started playing the game about five years ago.

To be honest, I just recently unsuscribed to the game (after said five years). The game is very slow-paced, and with the gigantic front that the war is fought on coupled with not exactly the largest playerbase in a MMOG, most battles in any one area seem to be comprised of no more than a dozen fighters on either side. Not a "battle" at all, but rather just little skirmishes here and there. And when a place does heat up, all the good toys have already been "used up" and won't be available for another couple hours. This is one of those games where you can drive your tank around for two hours and never once see another tank. Since armored clashes were one of my biggest enjoyments in this game, this can be extremely frustrating.

There's some gameplay changes that are being made to the game to help out some of these difficulties, and it may be that some of my problems have already been addressed. If so, this would be a very fun game for anyone looking for a very realistic simulator to get into. You won't find any hitpoints in this game, it's completely down to penetration mechanics. Getting shot is bad, one bullet is all it takes to kill you. Which tends to suck with the slow gameplay, but...

I just hope they can pull off the unique gameplay that the original Fallout games had. They were definitely of the mature category. The direction Interplay went with their "Brotherhood of Steel" console game just made me want to vomit. So shallow...

Well, they probably should never have even mentioned that they were continuing work on the game at this point. Of course, they haven't exactly even said that, either, we're sort of inferring it by the lack of a flat-out refusal to call it a "dead" project.

What I think is sort of funny about this is just how close it was made out to being done and ready for shipping. I have my own long un-fulfilled pre-order, and the game was even featured on the cover of one of the PCgamer magazine issues! That the game had ever been developed on the Q3 engine has to be seen as not likely at all, since TF2, Q3, and UT were all supposed to be competitors with the same release date. We all know how that race turned out...

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it disturbing that among all the noncommital tidbits dropped on the game over the past few years, not a one of them has been attributed to Robin Walker? Gabe Newell might be the head honcho at Valve, but Walker and his team were the folks who were responsible for TF1, and who had been "acquired" by Valve for work on TF2. A very vocal person in the TF2 community right up until the sudden media blackout, the fact that he hasn't been linked to any TF2 news in about three years makes me wonder if he's even still part of the project.

Nologic, TF2 wasn't ever developed on the Q3 engine, they had yet another homemade engine they were working on before Source, which they scrapped as not being good enough for what they were trying to do with it. The E3 media clips are from that engine. And even before they began working on it as a HL add-on, it was being developed on the Q2 engine like Dantastic said.

It's a shame it never shipped back when it was planned, as it incorporated a lot of new features that would have at least given it something in the "first to ever..." categories. Since then, other games have picked up on the announced features and incorporated them as their own. Multi-resolution mesh models, a "commander" class, smoke grenades, a better stealthy "spy" class, and so many more. Oh well.

SE4 = Best turn-based space expansion game ever.

The whole series is a micromanager's wetdream, and the complexity involved (especially with some of the mods, I recomend the DevNull mod) is outstanding. The game can bog down a bit when you get to the latter stages of the game (because you have just so many planets and ships to keep track of), but anyone who hasn't tried this series should do so ASAP. I can't wait to see how this fifth game shapes up.

16. Re: On Patching Jan 30, 2004, 02:07 ShakyJake

Regardless of anyone's opinion of the man, I don't think anyone can argue that this latest action by dreamcatcher was a pretty low blow. I for one never thought a publisher had the ability to set the price, I'd always thought that was something that was established by the developers. I wonder where the animosity between the two came from?

4. Re: absolutely stunning combat engine Jan 20, 2004, 17:31 ShakyJake

I was absolutely blown away by this game's demo when it came out. The physics engine is just amazing.

An example of its greatness:
I had a sniper get an interrupt on a German soldier who was clambering out of a window that was behind a bit of a corner. I fired, but the shot "missed" the exposed part of the soldier, instead entering the brick wall of the corner, passing through it to hit the soldier, and finally passing through him to knock out another hole in the wall past him. There are no canned death animations in this game, and the soldier was spun around in a half circle to end up sprawled half in and half out of the window.

Ever since I saw that in my first mission, I've been hooked. A game engine as powerful as this having been made with the full intention of being completely moddable? This is definitely one game that's a must-have.

Heh, you know, if they'd mentioned "Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood in Arms" in this story the circle really would have been complete.
