Seems like weapon repair and healing are tied to the real money currency in-game, which means you would NEED to spend money to play this. And the tokens are very pricey, too. To afford a premium weapon in the shop, you'd have to drop $4 apiece, and to hire on a merc permanently you're looking at about $15. Certainly one of the most ambitiously-priced "free to play" games I've seen so far.

I have to wonder if this is something coming from the Magna Mundi debacle. Since the Magna Mundi team got their project dropped, mayhap this is going to incorporate all the things which made that mod so great, but done in-house.

To be honest, the "Plan n Go" part of the game isn't the problem with the game. It's actually very cool to see your mercs executing their orders in real time, especially given the option for synchronizing their actions together. Unfortunately, there's a lot missing in this game, even compared to the original games 13+ years ago.

-There's no vehicles to travel around in, which kind of makes you wonder what the point of the SAM sites are no with no helicopter to cruise around in.

-The voice acting is some of the most bored-sounding I've heard in a long time, and really makes you wince when certain mercs start reciting their lines in a dull monotone.

-You can only have one attachment per gun since attachments are "equipped" to your character and not your weapon. I've read that there exist combinations of some attachments so that you're not limited to just one, but either those are much further along than I am in the game, or that discussion must have been about a mod.

-Buildings are no longer completely destructible, and you can only blast through predetermined points marked with green glowing silhouettes. Maybe not a huge deal, but I miss the mayhem you could randomly unleash with a LAW.

-You can repair weapons, but not armor. This is one of those things where I just assumed I was missing something obvious, because the different armors and the camouflage bonuses they give are actually very cool. Alas, to replace the money sink that weekly expenses made in the earlier game (there aren't any), you are intended to spend your money replacing all that cool stuff you've been outfitting your mercs in, and which gets shot up in every mission.

-You no longer have an in-game avatar! No longer do you have the option of taking the personality test and then existing as one of the mercs down on the battlefield. Your sole role now is of faceless commander, giving orders. This is baffling to me, because any time JA was ever discussed between me and friends, the personality test and in-game avatar was one of the things most fondly remembered.

Honorary mentions should go to the fact that there used to be no fog of war or sector inventory before one of the recent content patches, which made the game both trivial on one hand, and tedious on the other. All in all, while there are plenty of good things about the game (full 3d enviroment, graphics, cool camouflage system), it just comes off as a cheap knock-off to me.

So... not terribly excited about this one, but Relic makes good enough games that it always warrants to keep an eye on them.

I had a lot of trouble with some of those missions that required a lot of attention in different areas, too. Then, I discovered the "pause" key. Being able to pause the game and review what's going on around the map, and focus on the production that needs to be done without the pressure of having things going on makes some of those missions much more bearable.

Brandon Sanderson is an awesome writer, and I especially love how logical and ordered his systems for "magic" are in his books. Even in his finishing The Wheel of Time, you can read him explain the how behind what characters are doing, as opposed to Jordan's "he waved his hand and this happened".

BUT, I've noticed that it seems he just cannot write a genuinely stupid character. It's a minor thing, but some of the supposedly most uneducated characters in his series seem to pontificate far too much. For that matter, most of his characters seem to give off the same feel in how they talk and act, and it's only their differing circumstances that seem to set them apart, rather than personality. In this, I think Jordan was superior. His characters had a lot more life to them, I think.

Also, he was putting those books out at a rate of one a year, until that whole "dying" thing. I'd have a hard time accusing someone of "dicking around" in the face of that, especially when the first seven books were out in six years. Seems like he was moving at a pretty good clip, if you ask me.

Hah, I made the same observation to a friend who linked me this video. Explained that they were really just performing a kinetic strike with a 100 ton projectile, not combat dropping an Atlas. Cause that would be daft.

I really want to like this game, and I'm trying to be as objective as possible as I play it. However, the lack of fog of war just removes almost all the tension that battles in the original game had for me. You never knew when you opened that door if there might be a guy with an assault rifle on the other side of it. Being able to see every enemy on the map just seems to trivialize the tactical experience (although the gunfights still seem super deadly). It would make sense that they simply disabled fog of war, too, since your mercs still spot enemies on their own. Hopefully they re-implement this later. Or at worst, maybe with as much modding as JA2 got, this whole game could become something better.

Also, no personal mercenary? What the hell?! "Robocop vs Bill Gates", I was all set to answer questions like this again and make my own in-game avatar, and it's super disappointing not to have the option. It's hard to believe it's purely about balance, because you'll simply have to buy a mercenary that fits the role your own merc would have fit, anyway.

So did Paradox pick up the mod team to do this? I never got into the mod, but I do remember reading that in a poll, more people were shown to be playing this mod than were playing the vanilla game. I had some graphical problems trying to play it, so having a more polished version would be enough for me to try it again.

The game plays beautifully for me, very little trouble at all once I'm connected. The problem is getting there. Oftentimes I'll have to retry the same server several times until I no longer get the black screen, or endless "Loading..." screen. Also, not being able to rebind the "quick spot" functionality from Q is a huge pain in the ass. You can still bring up the commo rose and release the key while the enemy is in the middle to spot, but it takes more time, and you practically have to lead your targets to get it to work. I'm hoping they fix that one very soon here.

I was a bit leery of this new system when I first heard about it, but now I find myself looking forward to it. Just as the DD implies, the game will be as "RTS" as Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age, and I know I spent plenty of time in those with the game paused, planning. The main complaint about real-time strategy is that you simply can't control a large action efficiently in real-time, but having a planning mode makes that a moot point. And besides, it's really cool to watch your guys performing all together in concert, which is the whole appeal to RTS in the first place.

I'm just left wondering how well some elements of the action point system will transfer over. Characters that had more action points than others simply were able to do more, and I wonder if those characters in this new incarnation will translate that by being able to run faster? Shoot faster? Or maybe the skill system will make these possible on an individual basis? The main thing for me that I'm hoping for is to still have all the tactical challenge of the earlier games, while keeping all the campiness that made the game so enjoyable.

In other words, I will choose to remain cautiously optimistic.

Worst thing about the voice acting is that both sides are virtually indistinguishable from one another. Whether someone is German or Russian, all you hear out of them is heavily accented English. It is very poorly implemented when you can't even tell if someone's an enemy from the sound of their voice.

Thank god for the push-to-talk and mute options. I'm not sure they really thought through what having constant voice communications always ON really meant for the game. 10+ mouth breathers, random music, screaming children, barking dogs, and the one jackass who uses desktop speakers and sends every one of those other sounds through your ears a SECOND time... ugh. At least they pushed that feature out quickly, once they had some feedback on it.

Weird, you'd think of all people one of the developers of this game would know how to pronounce the clan names correctly in that video. I couldn't repress a serious wince every time I heard him say "Uesugi" or "Date". Still, looks pretty awesome, and definitely picking this up just from what I saw.

Have you tried Silent Storm, though? Having a full 3d enviroment and physics model actually allowed for some interesting possibilities, and I'd put it right up there with the Jagged Alliance series. I'm not happy that it won't be turn-based anymore, but that's only because I loathe RTS games. If this game's RTS is a combination of pausing and issuing complex orders then I wouldn't mind seeing how it turns out.

I have a few friends who I've never been able to badger into reading the books, but who I've gotten to watch the HBO series. They are completely lost, they tell me. Too much going on, and no explanation into why the politics work out they way they do, which in the series is largely dependent on the previous generation, and largely explained as you read through the books. It made me realize that the series really is just porn for us people who have read the books and know what's going on, and don't have to rely on spoken dialogue alone to take in all the history that leads into the series.

It only fixes the problem if you had a conflict with the demo being installed, from what I've read. Unfortunately, there's a serious issue with the 4-pack. The 4-pack and the regular version of the game each have a separate app ID, and right now the 4-pack isn't activated. It also shows up as "Hoard" in the library instead of "HOARD" in all-caps like it does for the people who bought the non 4-pack version. Very frustrating, as we were looking forward to playing together on release day...

Anybody else miss the times where helicopters in games took some real skill to use? Feels like they've went overboard with dumbing down the controls so that anybody could do it with little or no practice.
