So, it depends on your crew whether you should board those spacecrafts? Okay, my bad, didn't know this. When exactly does the game teach you this? Played almost through and never got that tip/tutorial by the game.

Being an indie game, there's not really a tutorial. I lost my first several games just figuring things out. But once you understand how to manage your ship, what weapons to buy for your strategy (destroy, disable, board & capture, etc.), and which crew races have which abilities, etc., it's really a deep tactical game. I hate 8 bit graphics, but love the game despite them.

Yes, sometimes there are situations about which you can do nothing and thus will lose the game. But many of my losses are learning experiences that improve my gameplay. And there's an inherent challenge to trying to beat the boss ship even if you only could only find ion cannons and heavy lasers instead of pulse lasers and a cloaking device. You always feel an accomplishment winning the game, since winning is not a fait accompli.

Random encounters always make you balance the risk and the reward. How badly do I need the scrap that I'm willing to risk a crewmember?

The biggest flaw in the game, in my opinion, is your second to last sentence. If you only have ion cannons and heavy lasers you have 0 chance against the final boss. Pulse lasers are the key to his second phase. If you can shoot out 5 or 6 pulse laser shots you can take that ship, regardless of your other loadout. If not, you're doomed. I suppose you could still do it with the right combination of numerous ion cannons (I'm not much of an ion cannon fan) and boarding crews, but generally I feel that either missiles or pulse lasers are the secret to the game, and the second phase boss renders missiles useless.

I've put something like 60 or so hours into this game, probably more, and won it many times (mostly on easy, only a few times on normal. I find normal much less fun.) Every victory has been with a major pulse laser ship. I've had really powerful ships without pulse lasers get to the second phase without ever really being touched throughout the entire game and just get decimated.

Yup, it's a crapshoot early on. You may get riches, or you may lose a crew member. Just like how jumping to a new galaxy while damaged could give you scrap you need, or could be a ship waiting to destroy you. Just like opening a chest in Diablo could give the town portal you desperately need, or could be an item useless to your class.

Really? Hmmm... I'm pretty certain you could never do that... It was a limitation that even featured heavily in an Impossible Playthrough diary on RPS, which caused Alec's squaddie to get wiped out as he couldn't disable the bomb after dashing to it in the last turn...

But I could be wrong. In any case, now you can't do it anymore. (As I found out when dashing next to a Meld canister in the last turn...)

Maybe it was true on everything other than Impossible?
I definitely did it on Classic, as well as Ironman (which I did on Easy, which turned out to be far too easy as I only lost one soldier the entire time.)

That was always the case. It's a shame that they still haven't fixed that. Sure, activating something is a "free" action, but it's a free action you need to take while you still have actions left, because otherwise it doesn't work.

Really enjoying it so far. The new maps are cool, and seem to be quite a bit larger than the old ones. The first "UFO Down" map I got sent to was finally not just a shitty forest, but instead the thing had crashed in a construction site behind a pool cafe, which was a really cool map.

Also, I'm totally in love with my female french squaddie. Her voice sends shiver down my spine. "Toute suite!" indeed, sweetheart...

NES also launched 2.5 years later in the US than Japan, so there were plenty of Japanese games to pick from.

Incidentally, Steve Jobs' track record outside of Apple is basically terrible, as well (Pixar, but Pixar exploded not on Jobs' merits, and there are strong indications that Jobs tried very hard to prevent them from becoming a media company and just wanted them to be a technology company.)

CEOs can be guys that really know the numbers, or guys that really know the products. You can count the great ones that fit both molds on one hand, usually. But what matters is who they surround themselves with. Cutter is somewhat knocking Tim Cook, but Jobs wouldn't have been successful without Cook - Jobs had the ideas, Cook made them happen. Making things happen wasn't Jobs' forte. A guy like Jobs needs a guy like Cook to be successful. And a CEO that's a numbers/process guy needs to make sure the people he works most closely with are the product guys.

Basically, so long as a CEO is very strong in one area, and smart enough to surround himself with people very strong where he or she is weak, you're doing pretty well.

Microsoft's strategy there is sound. It's the tactics of going so focused on TV, and especially cable tv, as well as their insistence in going after non-gamers to the detriment of gamers, thinking they can do what Nintendo started to do but failed at, that's killing them (they forget that Nintendo still captured all those non-gamers with games.)

It's an ecosystem many people expect to find their entertainment on. This means that, when they leave the couch, or when they turn off the TV, they still want entertainment coming in some form from some way. Can any of you "living room is dead!" people explain how Microsoft could be involved in that otherwise?

Plus, after that article yesterday, we're getting so many "Microsoft should just sell Xbox" comments. Ok, but if Xbox is really losing that much money, how will it survive without the capital from Office? And how will Microsoft grow if it focuses solely on areas it already dominates?
Microsoft's overarching strategy of "be more relevant in consumer entertainment" is clearly a good one, and clearly the smart one - they predicted how important internet and streaming would be. What they suck at is the tactics. What they suck at is figuring out where to be making money in their equations. But that doesn't mean their strategy is wrong, just their implementations.

I get it, a lot of you hate Microsoft, we all think Microsoft has severely dropped the ball here, and for once it isn't just the niche that's wary about what they're doing with their console. But don't stretch it to "the living room is dead" when that's so obviously both being too literal and ignoring what goes on in most households around the world.

No that's Chrome; I have like a dozen instances right now just looking at one tab. I launched IE for a minute and it had two.

In IE, that's an option that defaults to off (at least in the last version of IE I used). If I remember correctly, it's called open new windows/tabs in new process or something like that.

You're also confusing instances on the task bar with instances in the task manager.

Didn't that company that used to do all the benchmarking apps but then split in half release an FPS that took place in space and looked awesome but no one played that had the recoil physics sending people around (I kind of love that rambling run-on sentence.)

The infinite spawn in space comment someone made below is hysterical. I guess it made arguably sense in an urban war (still bad design), but space? That's just indefensible.

Ok, so Chrome does this, too? I didn't have it open when I wrote that. Frustrating. Yeah, I have 15 open, ranging from 11MB to 129MB.

FireFox is one nice, extremely large instance.

You can do that in all of them.
I mean in your task manager, not your task bar. All of them can have new windows, and I suppose new windows may be new instances in the task manager, but when you have one IE window open you'll see like 7 IE instances in your task manager.
It makes no sense.
