Valve is one company. Their revenue is... for one company. If three companies competed equally in that space it would be billions / 3.
You get that, right?
Also, integrated graphics are still way below what the PS3 and Xbox can do, and yes, the PC is unpopular. Does that mean it doesn't generate funds? Of course not. But you're so quick to say that the flaw of consoles is the platform and that by making PC games they'd solve it. This ignores that a huge chunk of games are ON the PC now, anyway. It ignores that the problem may be the content, not the platform. And it ignores that the public overwhelmingly wants something they don't need to tinker with, hence Steambox. |

You forget as long as we are there, someone is going to cater to our needs in form of games. Sure maybe not everyone, but as long as we have kickstarter I am sure there will never be a time where we don't get to play the games we actually want to play. ON PC I agree. But that doesn't mean that the people buying less console games would be buying more had they simply been PC games. |

ASeven wrote on Jan 11, 2013, 12:17: According to this report, WiiU sales are also way below expectations, along with sales of the games for it.
As I kept saying, the new consoles won't attract people as much as older generations did. WiiU is proving my point, now let's wait for the new xbox and PS and see if the trend continues.
Either way, console gaming sales crashed in 2012 and don't seem to slow down the crash anytime soon. Publishers, in their misguided vision of supporting consoles and ditching the PC, are about to rue that decision. How would PC development would help? Do you think the problem is the platform and not the content? Do you think that PCs capable of running games as well as consoles outnumber consoles? Why do you think the PC would be a draw when even Valve seems to be trying to make the PC more console-like? Do you look at crashing PC sales, going down much faster than console sales, and think that's something other than an issue with the platform yet look at console declines and put the blame squarely on them?
I'll never understand how so many people think PC gaming is what the masses want. It isn't. It's what we want, but we're people that wrote bat files to get things to work. We're a different breed. We're not normal. |

Regardless, the founding fathers weren't always correct.
Also regardless, at this point I'm not sure the path we're heading down of school shootings every damn week is really any worse than our government getting more oppressive.
Lastly, no one rational is saying "TAKE ALL THE GUNS!" much like no one rational is saying "IF I DON'T KEEP MY BILLION BULLET MAGAZINE THEN OBOOZO WILL BECOME POL POT OVER THE NEXT 4 YEARS!"
No one rational... You shouldn't care what the NRA has to say anyway or blame them for a few mentally unstable screwjobs going on a spree. Yet that's what the left does, blame the guns themselves, the NRA, video games, etc rather than the person doing the shooting. It's devoid of logic.
I didn't say that was his plan, all I said was the reason the 2nd amendment is there. Why do Liberals hate the constitution and bill of rights so much?
Every week huh? Hyperbole much? Not by much. We had 7 school shootings in 2012. We had one YESTERDAY! We're pretty close to one a month at this point, with the frequency increasing.
And yes, we should blame the people. But in most cases they're dead, along with a pool of other people. I'm not quite certain what blaming them will do for us. You love your fucking "personal responsibility" soapbox, but let's hold Adam Whateverhisnamewas from Newtown personally responsible. Should we hang his corpse? Maybe his mother did a bad job with him and we should punish her! Wait, she's dead, too...
We seem to have trouble holding these people personally responsible. We can blame them, but that doesn't seem to do much to stop this. We can, you know, diagnose them as nuts and lock them up, but how many misdiagnoses would we have?
Shut up about the Constitution and Bill of Rights. I'm 99% certain that, in the past, we've proven you know nothing about them. Not 100%, but if I look through your history there are probably some pretty gaping misunderstandings out there. Quite certain you've never studied any Conlaw... |

Also, I really don't fully get what people think pistols and semi-automatic guns will do against the government.
We have semi-automatic guns. OBOOOOOOOOOOZER has tactical drones, attack choppers, tanks, gatling guns, rail guns, nuclear subs, JSFs, etc.
Are we going to take tanks out with lots and lots of 9MM fire? |

However, yes, this game is going to suck. Which says a lot, because he's not much of a character. He gets about 30 minutes of screen time a season, and about 5 lines. He's actually behind T-Dawg on that. He basically just looks angry and is good at killing things (which is why we like him), but he's barely been fleshed out beyond that and most of what he's done with Carol has been annoying. But he represents the best potential for a redemption arc.
He's my favorite, too. I just realize there's very little cause for that. He and Glenn were the most solid characters, or I should rephrase as the only non-terrible one, before this season (which is a huge improvement.)
This game will be the Herschel's farm of FPS games. |

Creston Actually, they make a good argument. I wonder if EFF or ACLU will take up the cause. No, they don't. DDoS is not a protest. It's denying access to others, which is illegal. A protest at, say, Walmart is perfectly fine. A protest at Walmart which tries to prevent people from actually entering said Walmart is illegal and will be broken up by the police in a heartbeat.
No judge is going to rule otherwise, and the EFF / ACLU know this full well, which is why they'll never touch this entire thing with a ten foot pole.
Creston Sooo. Unions are dead in the US now? I mean they cant legally strike anymore? Lets say Walmart employees were to stage that hypothetical protest...Could the police come and beat the shit out of them for refusing to work?? Because wouldnt that be akin to refusing shoppers entry to the store right? If there is no one working at the store isnt that the same thing? Wow. |

jdreyer wrote on Jan 10, 2013, 18:51: This does sound really cool, though. I'd really love to try it out. I guess for an FPS, your head set becomes your mouse? So you'd aim with your head? And instead of a keyboard, you could use a controller for shooting and movement. That would be terrible for accuracy. For it to work properly you'd need an interface that allows you to look with the VR and aim with a mouse / gamepad, or for it to have a degree of auto-aim dependent upon where you're looking. That's fine for singleplayer games but it wouldn't work for competitive shooters. However they implement it, game support will need to be more involved than simply using it as a replacement for your mouse.
Personally I'm really quite interested in this. I'd be willing to put up with some motion sickness if the immersion was there, as I like to be ahead of the curve with new technology. I'm most interested to see how it works with Star Citizen, because that for me is the definitive title for it at the moment. And I can imagine it working really well with an atmospheric game like Dear Esther. Oh man, so disagree that it wouldn't work for competitive shooters. It could make them so much better. Right mouse button snaps your aim to your head like iron sights.
Suddenly the level of skill necesary explodes. |

Blame George Broussard FFS! Is he? Are you kidding? He's the reason it took 12 years. "Is he?" makes sense to only one of your statements: "The Duke is still alive."
Not all that sure about that. We got Indiana Jones 4 a few years back, and it was a heaping pile. People could argue "be happy he's still alive," but that's not true. The crap we got ruined any interest fans had in another movie. It ruined any interest the people involved had in making another movie. Basically, it ruined the franchise. The franchise may have been dead otherwise, but it just ended all speculation.
Duke may have another game in him, but no one will care. It will have to be amazing to sell well, and Gearbox is by now pretty well aware that more Borderlands will sell more games than Duke. Hell, we have had two pretty decent Borderlands games. We've had one good Duke game.
So no, I am not convinced Duke is alive. Nor am I convinced he should be. No one wants a character like Duke anymore. The original speculation we kept getting that he'd be old and decrepit in DNF and facing the fact that he was no longer cool was interesting. Making him still young and vital and thinking he was cool, handled unironically, was just pathetic. There's really not much you can do with that. He's lasted longer than what he was designed to parody, with that reference now completely lost, and has managed to morph into what he was supposed to be a parody of, only even worse because it's 20 years too late. |

You guys are totally missing my point...
'Economies of scale' is/are irrelevant in the scope of this argument. Fifty bucks today is just the same as fifty bucks 20 years ago. IOW, $50 is $50. Whether that $50 back then equates to $30 or $25 now doesn't matter. Games are still $50 - $60 at launch and the promise of cd's and dvd's was to bring that cost down, which never happened. Games were $50 - $60 when released twenty years ago and they're $50 - $60 now (depending on the game, which 'version' you get, if you pre-order...blah, blah, blah) C'mon, why are you two having a hard time with this? We're having a hard time with this because you began with "$50 today =$50 20 years ago." Patently false. Factually false.
Oddly false.
1) Cereal was like a buck a box 20 years ago. It's like four fifty a box now, and boxes are smaller. Yet games have actually reduced cost (stop whining about limited editions. Do you know how much the regular version of Civilization cost me when it was a year old? It was over $50, I'll tell you that much.)
2) Games 20 years ago were the product of 1-5 guys. Today? A game made by 1-5 guys is probably Free to $10. See: FTL. See: Every iOS game. But those $50 games you whine about? The product of 100-500 guys.
That's where the cost savings ended up. |

Bioware has no one but themselves to blame for destroying a hard-earned, once-nigh impeccable reputation to be sure; there is a difference, however, between flatly ignoring all criticism and tuning out the perpetual hate mongers. Unfortunately, things done and said by Bioware developers recently indicates more of a case of largely thinking everyone else is crazy and they are doing everything right. I was never a big Bioware fan... I've actually only played Baldur's Gate and about 5 hours of Mass Effect, but I agree with this based upon the crap that I heard about DA2.
That said, I still say that a message board isn't the proper forum to solicite feedback. What you get, positive or negative, is rarely constructive. Even if people join planning to be constructive they still get warped into the culture of being on an extreme.
It's just a very, very poor venue for that. And I don't mean to defend Bioware here - I own DA but never played it and have zero plans to get DA2 after the repetitive dungeon design people have told me about. It sounds like trash. |

Talking to them, rather than going to a venue that's basically 100% anonymous people screaming loudly to be more heard than the next guy? Large developer forums tend to be complete herds. For some developers (Epic's is like this, for one you guys would disagree with) it's people falling all over each other to tell the dev everything is wonderful and nothing should be changed. For others, like BioWare, it's people falling over each other to make sure BioWare knows that they will all burn in hell.
The feedback is mostly worthless. It's exaggerated hyperbole. It's squeaky wheels that don't represent the audience as a whole.
Why not? Just needs more supervising. I was part of a team, managing customer forums of a commercial daytrader site, way larger than that of Biowares little joint. We had our share of attention whores and outright CRAZY bums, but you can manage those people. Its a full time job, the company has to invest, but in the long run you keep a healthy community AND happy customers.
But this is not possible with one or two underpaid community managers and admins picked from the user base. This is WORK. Most companies dont see the profit in that, so forums deteriorate at a certain point and become a useless waste of money. I have no clue why you're saying this. Most game companies have one or several community managers. They do just that - manage the community. That has nothing to do with whether the dev team goes in and reads each thread to get feedback. Community managers foster the community, answer questions, etc. This is what developer forums tend to be used for. They aren't typically used for responding to "THIS GAME SUCKS!" or "YOU DID EVERYTHING PERFECTLY YOU ARE GODS DON'T NERF THE SHOTGUN TRICK I GO 100-0 WITH I WANT TO HAVE YOUR BABIES PLEASE HIRE ME!" |

Ultimately, they put their reputation on it. Maybe not enormously, but they stepped in a pile of crap and asked you for money to see it. They deserve people still thinking there's some lingering stench coming off of them. |
