3. Re: Suffering The Suffering Jun 28, 2004, 19:14 Jarek Forhanon

Hmm, I enjoyed this game a lot (actually, I'm still playing it). It has an excellent atmosphere and great enemy design. I also like how your choices in the game affect the ending. The main problem with the game (aside from the mediocre graphics) is that it isn't very scary. Creepy, yes, but not scary. In order to be scary, I'd actually have to be worried about dying. Unfortunately, this is not a concern in the game. This is a result of being armed to the teeth and having health pickups readily available. The ability to turn into a monster and tear everything apart doesn't help the suspense much either. Overall, I still find this game to be entertaining and well-deserving of an 8.0 rating.

I agree. Sure, the game basically consisted of slaughtering countless Nazis and floating skull worms, and yes, it began to get tedious at the end, but the same could be said for Max Payne (the tedious part, not the Nazis/skull worms). Regardless, I enjoyed the game and don't think it deserves the bashing you guys are dishing out.

P.S. The only thing BloodRayne has in common with Tomb Raider is the third-person perspective and a female protagonist with big boobies.

2. Great style Nov 13, 2003, 17:55 Jarek Forhanon

I love the style of this game. The weapons are beautifully vicious (I love the Stake gun and that ball-n-chain type weapon that has a secondary slicing mode). Now if only the enemies would move around faster... it would also be cool if the monsters could run on walls or bounce around or something. There is still plenty of dev time left for this game, so I have high hopes.

12. Re: Bad AI- Nov 12, 2003, 01:14 Jarek Forhanon

Hrm, I can't say I'm too impressed by the AI or by the physics. The physics aren't realistic at all when it comes to bodies. They remind me of the ragdoll physics of R6: Raven Shield. The AI also seems to be retarded. In the first game, they weren't too smart, but at least they wouldn't hesitate to shoot you and run around. I just read that the PC and X-Box versions have been delayed until Q1 2004. If these videos are from the final games, I hope this rumor is true.

The main problem is that Warren Spector believes there are no differences between consoles and PCs when it comes to gameplay fundamentals. This is simply untrue. There are three very important differences: controls, viewing area, and audience. Playing a game with a gamepad requires autoaim or an AI that has delayed response time. Also, the level design must accomodate the less-fluid movements (i.e. wider hallways, etc). The viewing area is also important. Console games are played on a TV, where small text is hard to read and finer details are harder to make out. This is why DX:IW has the huge text and interface. Finally, the audience is extremely significant. Console gamers tend to have a lower attention span and don't want to play a game for prolongued amounts of time. There are, of course, exceptions to this, but in terms of the audience as a whole, it is true. Obviously the shorter attention span affects everything from level design to difficulty.

To be honest, my anticipation for DX:IW has waned as I've seen more and more of the game. It strikes me as being dumbed-down for the consoles (not to mention that the art direction sucks; some of the weapons look horrible, and the whole game seems too colorful. DX is supposed to be dark and gritty, not purple and neon). I can only hope that the final PC game proves me wrong.

News Comments > Enter the Matrix Sequel?
27. Re: The main reason Nov 1, 2003, 20:41 Jarek Forhanon

The fact that, besides all the bugs, the game actually isn't even very fun to play is tribute to Shiny's lack of knowledge on gameplay, but this is purely my opinion, as I know that many of you think the world of Shiny's games.

I disagree. I thought that MDK, Wild 9, Sacrifice and Messiah (despite its lack of polish) were all great games. To say that Shiny does not know about gameplay seems a bit shortsighted to me. Granted, ETM was a piece of crap, but I can't really blame Shiny, since they were forced to put out a game that obviously wasn't finished. I was disappointed to hear that Shiny would be making the Matrix games because I have always thought of Shiny as being an innovator. Unfortunately, innovation tends not to sell well so I guess Shiny needed the easy money from the Matrix franchise. Hopefully the next Matrix game will be given the proper development time it deserves.

Gah, I was shocked to see that none of the hotkeys from C2 worked in this game. I don't know why they went and changed the control/interface scheme, but the new one doesn't work too well. In addition, the train level is too friggin hard. They have constantly respawning enemies that chase you down. If this were an action game, that would be okay, but this is a Commandos game, known for its slow and methodical pace. I hope the rest of the levels don't rush the player like this one does.

Then came Tomb Raider. The next in the LOK series was Soul Reaver one of THE most blatant rip offs of the Tomb Raider series there is.

Um, I'm sorry, but I really can't see how Soul Reaver was a ripoff of the TR series. The only thing they share in common is the third-person perspective and puzzle-solving elements. I can think of dozens of other games that have these gameplay aspects.

1.36 GB d/l!!!!
512MB RAM and 1 GB VRAM!!!!
Egads!

Actually, it requires 1 gig of virtual memory, not video RAM. I don't think there are any video cards available with 1 gig of VRAM

I really, really hate riced up cars =\ NFS has always been about exotics, like Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc. Now we get Toyota and Mitsubishi? If the game allows you to get gold rims and put neon lights under your car, I'm not sure I'll bother playing it =p What EA needs to do is go back, take the NFS:PU physics, apply NFS:HS's sense of speed, add GT3's graphics, and add the usual array of l33t cars, including the Jaguar XJ220.

I just hope that Piranha Bytes was already working on the English version of Gothic 2 before they found a publisher =/ Otherwise we'll have to wait another few months before the game hits retail stores.

38. Co-op isn't exactly minor... Jan 3, 2003, 05:39 Jarek Forhanon

Hrm, how can you call co-op minor? Co-op play demands that the game be designed a certain way. Serious Sam works well with co-op because it is a mindless, linear action game with virtually no plot. Unreal 2, on the other hand, actually has a plot that involves the player. Ingame cinematics, scripted events, etc, make Unreal 2 a rather difficult game to add co-op to. Personally, I prefer that they focus all their efforts on the singleplayer game. If I want Unreal multiplayer, I can play UT2k3. Unreal 2 is all about a compelling singleplayer experience and nothing more.

21. Impressions from screenshots Dec 27, 2002, 07:26 Jarek Forhanon

I can't say that I'm impressed with any of the screenshots that I've seen thus far. It seems like they are all taken from the console version of the game, which would explain the low-resolution textures and the aliasing problems. However, I have learned not to judge games based off of very early screenshots. In fact, it would be unwise to judge a finished game off its graphics alone. I have played quite a few games that haven't been up to par with graphical standards. Project Eden, Deus Ex, and a large number of other titles come to mind. These are games that prove that gameplay ultimately prevails over aesthetic appeal. I have the utmost faith that Shiny can develop an entertaining game, as proven by their track record. From Earthworm Jim on the SNES to Sacrifice (which I enjoyed immensely) on the PC, Shiny has always created entertaining games. Are their games the deepest? Nope. Are they epic? Not quite. Do they create huge fan-bases? Not even close. However, thanks to innovative design, I've found most of Shiny's games to be compelling and enjoyable. Yes, I even enjoyed playing through Messiah, despite everyone's intense flaming of it. So please, reserve any bitterness you may hold for games worthy of it, such as Deer Hunter 3 and Ethnic Cleansing.

P.S. If any of my ramblings seem slightly incoherent, I blame it on my barely conscious state.
