Creston I pre-ordered with Amazon using a promotion. On the 1st, when the pre-load was to begin, I got an email from them stating that they would no longer be doing that. This is because EA decided not to do a pre-load and pressured the reseller into compliance. While I thought that was a dumb idea, I was cool with it. I shortly thereafter realized that my entire order was canceled! Of course, hours later, I got the email from Amazon, apologizing for it and offering me $5 credit.
So I go to pre-order again and, of course, the promotion had just conveniently expired. Basically, they forgot to leave the game off the promotion "does not apply" list or some other nonsense I'm sure they made up and used the pretext of the pre-load recension to cancel orders that used it. They suggested I call in if I had used a promotion, but I damn well knew they wouldn't give it to me retroactively since they had changed it.
So basically, Amazon tried to screw EA with the code, EA screwed Amazon with the pre-load recension, Amazon screwed me by revoking it indirectly after they got screwed, and EA screwed me by not having a pre-load and then a bucketful of server issues, all in the period of four days before and during launch. Now you have Amazon pulling the sale of the game and similar antics. This quite clearly indicates a serious problem with the gaming industry and it's a miracle the whole thing hasn't imploded yet. That sound very unlike Amazon, to be honest. I would recommend contacting support, see what they say. Unlike EA support, it takes a few minutes to reach someone from Amazon, and the few times I've had to use them they've always been polite and helpful to the point of embarrassment.
Even so, yeah, it sounds pretty shitty.

Finally found some time to watch it. I though it was very cool, looks like it'll be very fun.
However, two things:
1) Disappearing corpses. Come on, this is the PC. How much performance would it take to keep corpses around? 0.00000004%?
2) Hitpoints. ARGH. The whole thing about Shadowrun has always been that it's dangerous. A simple ganger with a pistol is easily capable of one-shot killing you.
Now we have hitpoints and guys are taking three shotgun blasts to the face from point blank, whereas in SR, a PB shotgun blast is simply FATAL.
Not happy about that... (Edit: On second viewing, it is somewhat mitigated by everyone having 3 actions. 3 shots at an NPC will nearly kill or outright kill him if they all hit, so that's at least something.)
On the flipside, I thought it was awesome that they summoned the Abomination spirit, it broke free (ugh, normally that's Bye-Bye Team!) and then the Basilisk is like "hey, that's an enemy!"
Most games treat the broken-free spirit simply as "Enemy of Player Therefore Friend of Enemy AI", but here it's on its own. Awesome.
Spell effects need some work, but this is alpha so I'm sure those will be worked on.

Yes, a game where you can play it consistently offline without ever needing to connect to a server sounds a lot like an MMO. *sigh* I'm fairly sure that when you update, the game will sync itself no matter what. It will also sync itself when they release new content, etc. How else would they limit things like player housing?
Look, if you don't like features of the way they are implementing multiplayer, by all means, complain about those features. Frankly, I think the whole concept of having the game world sync up when you connect online sounds stupid. But that's a far cry from your original assertion that "nobody wants a multiplayer RPG". Hey, I did say the SimCity crowd might want it!
Fair enough, though I think there are very few Ultima fans who want one. Ultima is a single player game. Like SimCity, I doubt there are that many people who are clamoring for a fucking multiplayer version of it.
Edit : Btw, I do love their "Guilt pledge." That's funny.

Btw, in all seriousness, can someone who understand online advertising explain this:
To be clear we are continuing to payout commissions on all SimCity sales that are referred, however we are requesting that you please stop actively promoting the game If they make you pull the advertising, how can you still refer people to buy SimCity? Because doesn't that work straight off a click-through? And if there's nothing to click...?

It seems to me like they were hoping to squeeze by with just a few servers.

The first time I tried it when I was wide awake was a sensation almost like choking on air (I know that sounds weird, but the air flow is huge, when you're not used to it).
Did they offer a mask that just covers the nose, or nose and mouth? I mouth breathe at night, so I have to cover both...(obviously if this is embarrassing and you don't want to talk about it (it was initially, for me), feel free to hit me up in steam chat).
I hope it turns out well for you!
It's fine.
Yeah, I needed one that covered my mouth and my nose, which had me right on the edge of claustrophobia for awhile, until I finally managed to relax a bit. I was able to breathe through my mouth at first (and exhale as well), but eventually the pressure became too high and then I had to breathe through my nose only. Which then freaked me out when I opened my mouth and, like you said, you get this massive rush of air just shooting into your lungs.
I think I can probably get used to it if I'm in my own bed and not hooked up to a Terminator's worth of wires...

After a time it will become squashed and misshapened just enough that it will no longer firmly 'click" the actuator causing a double-click.
If you are careful not to destroy the teflon pads to access the screws that hold the mouse together, you can usually reshape that little bar with a little manipulating (heat helps). You can also use thin plastic and superglue to fashion a new surface that can lay over the old bar.
or you can just buy a new mouse..... Or you can do the old Commodore 64 joystick trick. Just wrap some tinfoil around it. Worked like a charm on those old buggers.

I already used BOTH my Zaneplols (Sic?) just to fall asleep in the noisy room with the too-small bed while hooked up to 9000 wires. So I had none left.
I did finally fall asleep with it, though I woke up several times when she increased the pressure it put out. Then at the final pressure, the mask started leaking, which obviously put an end to my slumbering, and by that point it was 5am and time to get up.
Ugh. I think I can get used to sleeping with it, I'm just worried about how high the pressure has to go to stop my apneas. The pressure at the end was insane, I couldn't even breathe out through my mouth.

He has one of those sleep masks now, has lost about 40 pounds in the last 6 months, and feels like a new man...
I never fell asleep at the wheel, but I found meetings at work were getting ridiculously hard to stay awake in. Always tired, and on some weekends I'd sleep for 12 or 14 hours, trying to catch up. But mostly it was the waking up (sometimes from a dream of drowning) and having no air in your lungs, and inhaling so deeply and frequently it was almost like hyperventilation.
I'd also read a study that said that in something like 70% of stroke cases, sleep apnea was a potential factor. That scared the fuck out of me, and was the final straw. Yeah, I've already had a TIA (mini-stroke.) I was lucky, and had no lasting effects, even though for a few hours I was half-paralyzed.
But it's more that I just don't have any energy to do anything. I fall asleep at work, asleep at home, asleep when reading, asleep when playing games, asleep when talking to people... I've been able to avoid falling asleep while driving, but I think that's mostly because I'm a pretty engaged driver (as in: I road rage against all the idiots around me.)
I just want it to be over. I hope the CPAP machine can help me, even though I had issues with it last night.

Sucks.
Good luck! Been about 5 years since I was diagnosed, and I knew I had it for years before that (waking up with no air in my lungs). See if the number of times you wake up in an hour is above 72, which was mine...
Well, it was a terrible, terrible night. I flew past by the 30 apnea events in no time flat, but then I just couldn't get back to sleep with that mask on my face until about 15 mins before the study was over.
All in all, not very pleasant. And now I will likely have to come back because they never got the right pressure reading to stop the apnea events.

Bhruic wrote on Mar 8, 2013, 14:25: No it wouldn't. There's a vast difference between an RPG that supports multiplayer, and an RPG that's an MMO. And this falls much closer to the latter side, though it won't be massive. It'll be an MO.
From the earlier linked article:
And instead, what we’re going to do is if you imagine you’re largely playing offline or solo player, well…when you are connected online, that’s when all the persistent world changes will update to you. And so who owns what house and what all the decorations look like, and all those things will change. And so if somebody is running a farm or a pub or a blacksmith in some other part of the world, when you’re online his NPC shopkeeper and the way he’s decorated his shop will pop in to your solo player experience. So the persistent world you’re playing in will update to you every time you go online, and be continuously updated if you’re continuously online, if you follow my drift.
They've said that player houses in the cities are going to be very limited, and only open to the "rich people" tiers. So because I don't have $500 to plonk down on it, I would never be able to own a player house in the city? And if said player who owns that house wants to make said house a pimpin' whorehouse, said changes get downloaded to my game when I "sync" it?
Sounds pretty much like an (M)MO to me.

Pass. Nobody wants a fucking multiplayer rpg, Garriot. Well, I guess the SimCity crowd might. Really? BG 1&2, considered by many to be among the best RPGs of all time had multiplayer. Did you ever try them? I mean, seriously? It was so broken as to be laughable. My buddy and I had planned to play all of BG2 in coop, even created characters that would work well together and cover several necessary areas.
We never even managed to get out of the first dungeon without de-synching.
Having multiplayer in an RPG isn't an automatic bad thing unless it's mandatory multiplayer. Since you can play this single player and offline, that's not the case here, so I'm not sure why this would be a negative. He is banking on his fame from having made Ultima on funding this. He even flatout says "I can't call it Ultima, because EA owns that, but I'm basically making another Ultima."
None of the Ultimas were multiplayer, and I'm pretty sure none of the Ultima fans who want another Ultima want multiplayer in their Ultima.
Because that would make it Ultima Online.

but bravo. Very succinct and well-put.
Creston Probably a year and a half or so. But really it's the only way to make changes. Beancounters love the data they get from preorders and sales about what people want. They don't love vague hard to quantify forum complaints. Forums are really for specific game issues that can be easily resolved. Not for voicing your discontent with the whole game in general. At that point it's too late for that because you shouldn't have bought it in the first place.
At least that's my thinking on the matter. I guess that shows how often I read sigs...
But I agree. Not buying (and especially not pre-ordering) games is the only way to make a publisher take notice.
Well, that or just ignoring publishers altogether and playing crowdsourced games. I'm heavily leaning in that direction myself, with maybe one or two exceptions a year for REALLY cool AAA games. (think the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls.)
