And the fact that they could try to turn off cheetah speed to resolve the connection issues makes me wonder how much of the calculations are being done on the servers. If it's the case that the game actually does a lot of that on the EA server farm it's no wonder it crashed their shit. Also, if that's the case, it feels like some smoke and mirrors. So like, if everyone in the Sim City "world" starts cheetah (refuse to capitalize) mode'ing, that could just crash the entire game for everybody? At any time?

Well, if you didn't put up enough servers to handle the calculations, sure.

But here's the funny thing: EA claims that the small city sizes are necessary because OUR computers aren't powerful enough to handle the intricate detail of the game.

But then on the flipside, they say (and it seems) that a lot of these calculations are done on their server side, which is supposed to be eminently scalable. So really what they are saying is "We stuck with small city sizes because we don't want to pay for the infrastructure to allow bigger ones."

BUY NOW! SUPPORT EA!

Why does a SimCity game need leaderboards in the first damn place?

Well obviously it doesn't, that's why they turned them off.

What's the EA fuckup got to do with Torment?

Well, wouldn't you rather cut the fucking publishers out of your next game as well? All SimCity's problems can be laid directly at the feet of EA and its bullshit Always-On necessity.

I'm happy there are games being made without some cocksack in a suit bleating about useless shit NEEDING to be included in the game.

When is Project Eternity due? In fact, has any Kickstarted game been released yet? When is the first one set for release? Does anyone know?

There have been quite a few releases, though none of the "Major" ones are done yet. I think Shadowrun is first, and it should be out somewhere this Summer. (that was their latest projection anyway.)

Wasteland 2 is scheduled for August. P:E is not due until 2014. I have no idea about Doublefine's release date.

I never did, either.

It's like I don't know you anymore, man!!

Edit :
No, but I went with the all digital $125 on this one to make up for it.

Oh, now I remember you!

Btw, if you'd like to play it, you can borrow my original copy. I've got my GOG copy to play, so the original is really just sitting on my shelf gathering dust.

Also...

What happens if you don’t raise enough money?

We feel confident that, with your help, we will reach our goals! In the unfortunate case that we don’t raise the money via Kickstarter, we would likely have to go from “indie” development to working with a major publisher, who would probably not be as open to what I, Lord British, and YOU, our fans have envisioned for the game.

So, there IS publisher interest in this game, then? How come now all of a sudden there is interest in an "ultima-style" RPG? Something smells fishy.

I'm beginning to think RG just wants a slice of the Kickstarter pie so he can jerk off in space again.

In hindsight, the timing of this Kickstarter, seeing as how it coincides with EA's latest fucking clusterfuck, is brilliant.

Also, this is a multiplayer game. I guess RG wants to see if he can mimic EA.

Pass. Nobody wants a fucking multiplayer rpg, Garriot. Well, I guess the SimCity crowd might.

What we saw was that players were having such a good time they didn't want to leave the game,

OMG, REALLY KIP? Players want to keep playing their new game? WHAT IS THE FUCKING WORLD COMING TO?!

Don't all you filthy players realize that this means EA has to put up more servers! DAMMIT! They had so carefully calculated everything too! We put up enough servers for 10% of the population, if that 10% only logs on for 30 minutes at at time. Then they log out, and can go back in the 30 minutes queues.

Who ARE all you fuckers who just keep playing and playing and playing, denying everyone else a highly limited server slot? Don't you CARE?!

Filthy PC gamers. If you aren't pirating, you're PLAYING the game you bought! It's never good enough for you guys!

EA. It's in the game. Now stop playing it so others can play it too.

On the one hand, I'm glad RG is going back to what made him great.

On the other hand, RG, you don't have this one million bucks to cough up yourself?? You went to fucking SPACE for 25 million bucks. Now you need me to finance your game?

I'm undoubtedly the biggest Ultima fan there is (I will gladly take on all challengers!) but I dunno.

I wonder what the game is really like though, even those glowing 9.5 reviews are very suspect. My bet is that even if the game was performing 100% as advertised it would still be a buggy mess, with artificial limits on size and terrible AI....

Eurogamer Sweden gave it a 100%, a perfect score, calling it the best game ever made. And people still wonder why nobody thinks gaming journalism is honest anymore.

Yeah, I called those fucking toolbags out on the first day. I guess EA spends a lot of ad money in Sweden. There was another Swedish pos review site that gave it a 95.

Anyway, monkeys will keep buying this shit, and publishers will keep fucking them over, because, well, they're monkeys! It's not like they're clever enough to understand that, hey, maybe I should refuse to be treated like shit by EA and its ilk.

Just keep on lapping up that EA shit, monkeys! You do yourselves proud. Who knows, maybe five years from now, EA will make you one of their shills! Then you too can go on forums everywhere and proclaim that it's ridiculous that people hate EA for this sort of thing.

And then there's the brilliant firetrucks. 3 houses are on fire on the same road. 3 fire trucks are dispatched. The first firetruck stops at the first house on fire. Firetrucks 2 and 3 are now stuck behind firetruck 1 and can't get to houses 2 and 3, which burn down.

That's pretty damn funny. Such an easy fix too, first truck out heads to the farthest fire, 2nd truck to the next furthest etc..

One possible action is to negotiate with Hasbro,

They tried that. After a few months of stone cold silence, they gave up.

another is to use Planescape without Hasbro.

And get sued out of existence. Probably not such a good idea.

There are other alternatives which I'm sure you can intuit easily.

Yeah, not really? The IP holder of Planescape doesn't want to let it be used in computer games. That pretty much ends the discussion of having Planescape in a computer game...

EDIT: SO ARE YOU!!!!!!

Hehe yep. And I am curious how the Ziets thing is going to work. AFAIK, his inclusion on Project Eternity was full time, and they're still in pre-production. Now he's also going to be in pre-production for Torment? Is he just going to work two jobs or something?

I hope they'll answer that. Just seems kind of odd to me. Almost as if they're just taking P:E's stretch goals, figuring "hey, it worked for them, and we've got mostly the same customers anyway!"

Dev wrote on Mar 7, 2013, 18:11:
Update #3 is up
Adds new stretch goals, and adds additional details and items to previously achieved stretch goals, such as the new game area "Ruins of Ossiphagan"

The following is the BEST.STRETCH.GOAL.EVER.

Last, but most certainly not least: Upon reaching $2.5m, we will send out a special video from Colin. Those of you familiar with Colin’s very early work may recall that he wrote the Complete Book of Elves for 2nd Edition AD&D. You AD&D players may remember how dreadful this work was, making elves so incredibly powerful and unbalanced that all of our AD&D games were henceforth ruined until 3rd Edition D&D came to save us. (This is a slight overstatement. We could just pretend the book never existed, after all. That’s what I did…) Fortunately, Colin wrote that over 20 years ago and he’s learned much since then. =) Plus he’s the creative guy on Torment and Adam and I aren’t going to let him get too close to the gameplay systems. Just kidding. (Mostly. )

But we’ve always felt that he owes us for polluting our campaigns with his bizarre passion for elves. Thankfully, Colin seems to have gotten through his elf-fetish years. But his penance isn’t yet complete. He has apologized before, but somehow I find it lacking. I don't know about you, but I want to see him say it. So as part of our update celebrating this Stretch Goal, Colin will apologize publicly for this sin of his youth through a special video.

FUCK AND YES! I still remember the HORROR when, upon starting a new campaign, I get my 6 players together and have them introduce their characters, and find out ALL SIX OF THEM ARE FUCKING ELVES. They proceeded to "sing hymns to the trees" the rest of the day. :AAAARGGHH:

Needless to say, they all died. Horribly.
APOLOGIZE, COLIN!
