My wife and I had to put our cat to sleep today. She'd had a stroke over the weekend, and when we came home today, we found her lying on the ground, seemingly paralyzed in her hind legs.

She was 13 years old.

Bye Tabby. We will miss you.

Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto has created a beautiful, undeniably scary time-lapse map of the 2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998, beginning with the Manhattan Project's "Trinity" test near Los Alamos and concluding with Pakistan's nuclear tests in May of 1998. This leaves out North Korea's two alleged nuclear tests in this past decade (the legitimacy of both of which is not 100% clear).

Each nation gets a blip and a flashing dot on the map whenever they detonate a nuclear weapon, with a running tally kept on the top and bottom bars of the screen. Hashimoto, who began the project in 2003, says that he created it with the goal of showing"the fear and folly of nuclear weapons." It starts really slow if you want to see real action, skip ahead to 1962 or so but the buildup becomes overwhelming.

That is fucking crazy. I had absolutely no idea the US, Russia and France set off so many nukes. Seriously, US? A THOUSAND fucking tests? What all did you learn in the last 500 tests that you didn't learn in the first 500? You know all those were just because some asshole generals in the military were like "YEEEHAW LETS WATCH SOME MORE PRETTY 'SPLOSIONS!" Asstards.

I was also waiting for the French nukes going off in 1996, which sparked a wave of hatred in Europe towards France that was staggering. (More than the normal level of hatred to France.)

Thanks for linking.

from a tech perspective, it would require a RIDICULOUS amount of back end bullshit to constantly scan everyones windows machine for cracked software 24/7

If they wanted to do it right, sure. But seeing as how this is MS, and doing things half-assed is more their speed, I'm a little worried about whatever "Pirate Echelon" system they'll put up instead just disabling all your games because they don't use Xbox live...

It's kind of like how DAO had extensive mod tools but nobody really cared, so Bioware didn't bother with DA2 and Inquisition.

Errr, DAO got quite a few mods. Some very good ones too. DAO in no way compares to the lack of Mods for W2.

I was kinda hoping someone would do an overhaul mod for W3 (like oscuro did for Oblivion), as the level of monsters is all over the fucking place. Level 9 monster, level 9 bandit, oh, hi level 24 basilisk.

Level 18 drowners, level 15 wyverns, hey a level 3 bandit camp.

It really makes no sense whatsoever.

I already had a monk build where Exploding Palm's explosion applied Exploding Palm to all monsters caught in its radius, and where 7-sided strike applied Exploding Palm. It was already basically an "Activate 7-sided strike and watch everything on screen explode." build.

With that crazy set item that makes 7-sided strike detonate exploding palm it becomes even more ludicrous. I watched Quinn play Torment X with it, and it's just...

Is someone really going to try to make the argument that they need access to policy editing and disk management just to play The Witcher 3?

Well no, of course not. Clearly what you need is Enterprise Admin level.

Eeeeeeexactacaly. It might also have to do with TESO. Maybe Beth does indeed hope that people with an itch for TES will hop on TESO sooner or later.

I doubt it. Todd Howard's studio isn't doing anything with TESO, so if that was their plan then said plan would leave an entire studio doing nothing.

I have a bad feeling because Todd Howard specifically said "very long time". That doesn't sound like their usual four/five years at all but much longer.

Well, we've jumped another console generation, so odds are pretty good that it'll tack on another 1 or 2 years to the development time. Fallout 4 has already been in development for 7 years or so now, right? As the games get bigger and stuffed with more content, and the size of their studio remains the same, time between releases is clearly going to increase. Sadly.

Look at how Blizz has not released Warcraft 4 until today even though it would instantly sell millions. Is Beth following in their footsteps with TES and delaying any SP TES indefinitely?

Nah. Apples and oranges.

It could also be technical reasons. Maybe FO4 is the last game they want do on the Creation engine. Writing a new more advanced engine from scratch that has the same capabilities especially with regard to modding has got to be a pretty epic undertaking.

Which is what I think might be the biggest hurdle. But to be honest, I thought it had been the reason behind FO4's long delay, and it doesn't appear to be.

Also, holy shit, the guy got fired for that? That's fucking retarded.

But...
knowing that due to my student loans, I wouldn't be entirely debt-free until I turned 40. That's not a hyperbole either. I'm just now barely under $100,000 in student debt and my last payment is scheduled for the same year that I turn 40. "That student debt is intimidating, but it's worth it for the end result." I've undone my end result.

The american college education system is a giant fucking shit pile. We need to stop letting young kids take on $100+K in debt for a major that is guaranteed to never get them a fucking job. Stop letting people graduate in liberal fucking arts and medieval history and english literature etc.

I know that if I can't find a job at least as good as this one, I won't be able to provide for my family.

Yes yes, welcome to the corporate world. We've all been there. Get unemployment, get your resume out there, and start looking.

Yeah it is really sluggish atm. Sometimes going back to dashboard after pressing the button literally takes seconds before anything happens.
I'm looking forward to this update.

I imagine it's because they've been taking that 10% they reserved for the UI/connect and now letting games use it?

It's really not as terrible as some people are saying it is. It feels reasonably snappy enough for me, it's just that the tiles are just a shitty way to do a UI (with a controller)

The largest city in Skyrim has a population of 85.

The largest city in Skyrim had to run on an Xbox 360/PS3.

The largest city in Witcher 3 has to run on an Xbone/PS4.

Something to keep in mind.

As for looks, eh, Skyrim has a different feel going for it. I think Markath and Riften are very nicely done cities that fit well within the idea of a Viking country. And where stylized beauty is concerned, Novigrad and Oxenfurt are really way way waaaaay too pretty and clean to ever exist in a country that's as miserable and bleak as the Witcher 3 portrays it.

(And I say that as someone who loves Novigrad. It's a ton of fun to just walk around and look at every nook and cranny.)

I think it's one reason why Bethesda recently stated that 'the next elder scrolls is a long ways off'. They know CDPR has so out-done them in every way.

Please. Skyrim sold 30+ million copies. The reason the next Elder Scrolls is a long way off is because all their actual world builders/scripters/animators etc are all working on Fallout 4 and will then work on DLC. Not until after FO4 has been released will people gradually move over to ES6. This has been their MO for over a decade. Witcher 3 has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I hope someone will figure out a way to make all Gwent players:

A) smarter
B) available straight from the start. I got very annoyed several times where I had to do three or four quests before I'd finally unlock a single gwent player.

Also, Gwent is pure P2W! CDPR SUXX0RS!!!

IN other news Windows 10 also scans your media files and sends the info about them, hashes, including your unique HW ID to cs1.wpc.v0cdn.net owned by https://www.markmonitor.com/

So not just does MS scan your porn files, it uploads the info to an anti-piracy outfits servers. WTF is MS and markmonitor doing with that ?

Source?

Got the launcher. Had to disable antivirus as it believed the launch file to be a virus. Downloaded this portion of the game, took about 45 minutes via cable. Launched. Brings you to an apparently empty (except for your faceless, bodiless self) hanger. Moved towards the exit. Game froze. CTRL-ALT-DELETE to get out of it. Retried. Same thing. Rebooted, retried. Same thing. Deleted until further improvements.

Sounds awesome. I think the only thing that would have made it better is if they'd added a "Click here to buy some $hip$!" button, kind of like EA did with the end of ME3.
