Well, when they have a chokehold on the industry, sometimes you have to go there. I could not pre-order the Ghost edition of Destiny anywhere else. Amazon was sold out in minutes of it being listed. Best Buy is clueless and pre-ordering CEs from them is basically rolling the dice and hoping they don't fuck you. Nobody else seemed to have the Ghost Edition up for pre-order.

Shit, when I owned my own game store I had to pre-order some things from Gamestop because I knew my distributors weren't going to get them. They move inventory like nobody else in the industry, so publishers kiss their ass and screw everyone else.

Yep. Only the game industry is dumb enough to bitch and bitch and bitch about one retailer (gamestop), and then continuously bending over every which way they can whenever gamestop wants them to.

As far as the football picks go, can I make all of mine now? Anytime the Jets play anyone I pick the other team. If the Giants play a team they are favored to beat I pick the other team. If the Giants play a team they match evenly with I pick the other team. If the Giants play a team they have no chance of winning I pick the Giants. Any time a team with an animal name plays a team with a human name (i.e. the Lions vs the Cowboys, the Steelers vs. The Dolphins) I pick the animal. If two animal teams play each other or two human teams play each other I pick who would win in a cage match. Some examples: a Bengal would eat a Raven no problem, and a Packer wouldn't stand a chance against a Viking. And you just know a goody-goody Saint would just get his ass handed to him by a salty Buccanneer. I mean, c'mon!).

I feel a winning season coming on for myself.

You should pick like this all season, because it would be hilarious if you ended up with like an 80% success rate.

(Almost as hilarious as when Bill Simmons did a year's worth of picks based on knowledge and analyzing games and investigation, and he lost to his wife who picked purely randomly or occasionally on "which teams has the nicer uniform.")

Is it of any interest to anyone that I'll do what I did last season? I have no knowledge of the sport and I just randomly checked teams. I think I ended one to last.

Nope, pick however you want.

I pick my games based on a vague concept of "oh yeah, they're pretty good", while at the same time still thinking of the teams the way they were in like 2009.

I get what Creston is saying. The majority of games are seemingly made for horny 15 year old boys or summer popcorn flick movie-goers and no one else.

I should have said "make" rather than "marketing", but I was implying that most games seem to be made for the < 18 crowd, yeah.

It's easy to see why Microsoft ate crow and backscrabbled so quickly when rumors started flying that Gamestop was going to simply not carry the failbox and focus on PS4 exclusively.

It baffles me why people keep going to gamestop, though. Apparently shitty service from a drooling moron who knows shit about games is the preferred shopping experience for the average console player?

That is very, very true. Of course, NOBODY in the gaming press is deserving of the title journalist. None.

Nathan whatever was the most discussed, and he seems to have not only not reviewed her game but only mentioned it twice.

I can't find it offhand so quickly as their tag system is fucking terrible, but I do believe he gave a WOT I THINK or at least a pretty significant preview/review about Depression Quest on RPS. (the dude alleged he reviewed it for Kotaku, which is untrue.)

That said, the (p)review didn't seem overly gushing, and I played Depression Quest, and it was pretty good, so it didn't seem as if he was going out of his way to blow sunshine up her ass.

And I never once got any money from a publisher.

No, of course YOU didn't. But whatever rag/website you worked for obviously had their ethics for sale, as evidenced by your own first paragraph.

It's hard to be honest when you get censored for it. I know a couple of my reviews didn't get published because I gave the games in question a really low score and called out all of their issues. I guess the editors didn't want to piss off the publishers, so we just didn't publish the review.

I'm not blaming the average poor schmoe who reviews a game. He's just a guy/girl trying to earn a few dollars so he can actually buy food. I blame the shitbag publications who have their ethics for sale, and I blame those self-absorbed douchenozzles who can't stop calling themselves fucking 'journalists.'

MythBusters Stars Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara Are Leaving the Show.

So, I see that Adam and Jamie will return to become the sole hosts, but I wonder why? Just lower ratings so the show is trying to save money?

The last times I watched the show it seemed to be mostly about setting up ridiculous experiments and debunking old wives tales.

Don't get me wrong, blowing up cars is cool and all but I'm hoping it goes back to more substantial myths like in the earlier seasons, like when they tried to find Jimmy Hoffa's body for example.

I think a whole season of them trying to debunk something like Atlantis could be pretty cool. But I'm definitely not the average viewer either.

The problem is that they have basically run out of actual myths, most of Hollywood's flaws and even a large majority of "real or not?" Youtube videos.

Oh sure, there are some "myths" or rather, commonly held beliefs, they could test, but that leads to episodes like where they set up a greenhouse and see if music makes plants grow better. Or the one where they set up an automated light switch that turns a bulb on and off every second for a month straight. Which is NOT good television

jimnms wrote on Aug 22, 2014, 22:19:
In the beginning it was just Adam and Jamie. I think Kari appeared briefly in one episode where they made a mold of her ass. Then Kari, that other chick and Tori came on as the build team. I remember when they changed the format of the show where Kari, Grant and Tori started doing myths on their own people were bitching and wanting it to go back to just Jamie and Adam. Now their gone and people are bitching to keep them.

I'm betting they're going to try and do some kind of spin-off show, but seeing the quality of shows Discovery lately, it's going to be good and get canceled or suck.

I know, but Kari and Tory didn't really start gelling until Grant joined them. The three of them just have much better charisma on screen than Adam and Jamie do, because Adam just laughs like a maniac about everything, and Jamie still believes it's cool to just be a stoic bastard about everything.

Btw, the episode where they took a mold of a then very, very young Kari's ass: AWESOME. (Seeing her blush like crazy was also pretty funny.)

That seems completely valid and in line with other punishments that have been meted out for things like rape and such. Oh wait, I forget, most rapists never actually see prison time.

Of course, if you pirate a movie you don't buy it, since every pirated copy is a lost sale, and if you don't buy a movie, you're not paying sales tax (or in the case of the UK: VAT) over it, depriving the government of income.

And THAT, my friends, is the absolute worst fucking crime in any socialist society.

They aren't targeting the company. They are targeting the players. These guys basically thrive on the attention they get from "bringing down your favorite game."

When Wildstar and some other games were being DDOS'd a few weeks ago, the guy who was doing it was bragging and acting like a fucktard on some stolen Twitter account.

Awesome...

Linked from that article is this pretty funny roundup of totally ludicrous crowd funding examples.

The "new theory of gravity" guy actually got people to give him $443 worth of pledges. We should explain to these people the benefit of, really, just burning your money. At least that way you get heat. (which according to gravity guy leads to... anti-gravity?)

Indiegogo is like setting your money on fire.

(then again, this would have succeeded on kickstarter as well, and there are examples on KS of guys just taking the money and fucking running too.)

As always, and like Tjold (hi, btw!) posts, if it sounds too good to be true, it is, and people are idiots for giving money to it.

Actually, Forbes is probably much less betrothed to the publishers.
But still almost definitely is.

Forbes has a slight benefit of the doubt, since they don't solely deal with games. Their entire income isn't tied to "How many ad banners is EA buying from me this year."

Then again, if you read the article below the linked one, one of their writers makes this argument:

Do video game journalists serve as consumer advocates, diligently informing consumers of the problems with upcoming games, business practices, and so forth, or are we simply an extension of the hype machine, legitimizing PR efforts by the industry? Are we critics or salespeople?

Naturally, the answer is “both.”

No. Naturally the answer is NOT both. The answer SHOULD be that you are consumer advocates etc etc, and that you are critics. You should NEVER fucking be an extension of the hype machine and a sales person.

The very fucking idea that this guy thinks he could be BOTH shows the extent of the problem. How the fuck could you be both a critic and a salesperson? The two are diametrically opposed! If you want to call yourself a game "journalist" and pretend to have any kind of credibility whatsoever, you cannot 'feed the hype machine.'

Walter Cronkite and Christiana Amanpour never 'fed the hype machine' and never acted as 'sales persons.' If you presume to call yourself a journalist, in the same vein that they were journalists (or are, in Christiane's case), you should hold yourself to the same standards, even though you did exactly 0% of the required work to deserve said title.

If you want to be both, call yourself a fucking game blogger and be fucking honest about it.

tl;dr: Forbes is fucking terrible as well, for trying to pretend they can just sit on both sides of the fence.
Fuck the 'gaming press'.
