All the bullshit aside, I'm glad Brad still takes the time to talk to gamers, especially here.

If your next game is awesome, I will gladly buy it. Your personal beliefs and opinions have no standing on me enjoying a game.

If.

I guess it's possible if you loop it through and the Xbox basically becomes a second DVR. But even then, how often do you run into that scenario you mentioned? The simplest fix is to just "keep all" rather than "keep 5." and the whole problem goes away.

Yeah, I'm totally going to buy the #orthbox for that "convenience..."

best way to indoor cook a steak - sear it on both sides for 90 seconds in a fryer, then immediately transfer steak still in pan to oven heated to 450. time depends on thickness of steak.

my friend and i did this with some USDA Primes we bought at costco a couple weeks ago. they came out rarer than i usually prefer, but good god they were sublime.

Frying pan, medium hot, decent amount of butter. Sear on both sides to taste (usually 60-90 seconds), then douse the heat with a sizable shot of good brandy. Let it cook for 4 to 5 more minutes, flipping every now and then, and serve.

Hmmmmmmmm...

Not sure about that game, but for a lot of them it just easier to buy new copies on GoG or Steam to get rid of the antiquated CD checks, especially if you can get them for three bucks on sale.

I would have gladly done that, but sadly it's not on GoG or Steam. :\

Yeah, it's pretty fucking terrible. Tried to find a no-CD key for my old Battle for Middle Earth CDs awhile ago (they wouldn't play because of whatever horseshit DRM was on it), and each and every single one of them had the kind of malware in it that made my scanner go "NO.FUCKING.WAY" and delete it as soon as it downloaded.

Even Origin, UPlay and Games for Window Live provide much fewer hassles.

Oooo...kay. Time to put the crack pipe down, buddy.

In the current implementation, all the DRM schemes I mentioned allow far more freedom in how you play and install games on multiple PCs, compared to Steam, strictly from DRM perspective.

They don't do any such thing. In fact, both Origin and Uplay function exactly the same way as Steam does. You can install the game onto an unlimited amount of PCs, but you can only actively play it on one of those at the same time.

As far as installing games, yes, Steam is crap in that it doesn't allow you to set the install folder except for a handful of games. Origin is better in this regard, as is Uplay. It's never been a big issue to me as I have all my games on the same drive anyway, and it's something that's circumvented with a few clicks to link drives, so I hardly consider it a major deal.

You know what, here's more to blow your mind..... SecuROM's implementation in Mirror's Edge, Crysis 1 or Burnout Paradise was the best and least user-offensive DRM scheme that I have ever seen. You could install games anywhere, with only install-time DRM server checks, de-register games, and have multiple simultaneous activations. If the purpose of DRM is to act as a deterrence for large scale misuse, while still allowing users to have a breathing room and flexibility, then it did succeed.

The only thing blowing my mind is how you champion a pathetic piece of shit DRM that would only allow you THREE INSTALLS MAXIMUM over Steam. You seem to have forgotten that that Securom DRM often came with a 3 install limit, forcing you to have to contact support and beg for more installations. It was patched out of a few games later on, but not all. Furthermore, if you ever had to reinstall your OS and never had the chance (or simply forgot) to uninstall game X first, that activation was gone.

Yeah, no, great system there. SO much better than Steam! Rolleyes

And again, playing the game on multiple PCs at the same time IS considered unwanted by publishers, and you can avoid it with Steam by simply switching it to offline mode. (For that matter, Origin and Uplay will allow that too.)

Anyway, whatever, if you want to hate Steam and pretend that Games for Windows Live is actually better, go right ahead. I have better things to do than to argue with delusional individuals.

When we live in an era marked by massive oil spills, faulty foreclosures by bad banks, and rampant consolidation in the airline and telecom industry, what does it say about EA’s business practices that so many people have — for the second year in a row — come out to hand it the title of Worst Company In America?

Actually, it probably more says something about Consumerist's website, and its inability to prevent bots from spamvoting.

Even so, EA really SHOULD be thinking about what a terrible fucking shithole they are. Constantly fucking over your customers as a modus operandi is going to catch up with you at some point.

Any Sammy would probably be getting init from the absurd 'ware they're carrying.

If your GM allowed Cyberware and Bioware (not the developer) to their max in one, then probably, but even then it's still the roll of the dice. The mage rolling 3D6+7 or the sam rolling 3D6+11 or so. And of course, every mage walked around with a bullet barrier focus, since few GMs were cruel enough to have mages be constantly astrally attacked by shit because of their foci. (we typically just dealt with the issue by making foci ludicrously expensive. To the tune of 50-100K each.)

The entire metaplot for 4th edition though was "get the magic McGuffin!" The big deal with otaku becoming technomancers is basically ignored,

That never made sense to me. Otaku already never made sense, because they made normal deckers 100% obsolete. And then, hey, let's make them even more powerful! It's like the D&D Bullshit team got its hands on Shadowrun. :\

Oh, also, with 4th ed, it's way, way easier to *not* actually throw that stunball (which you're right is f*cking death), but to summon a force 14 spirit that throws Stunball 14 on your behalf. Oh, and that spirit basically has 14's for it's stats, so even if your sammy gets init, he's still f*cked. Joy!

And that's horseshit. Nothing in 2nd edition stopped you from trying to summon a Force 14 elemental. Except the fact that that Force Rating was likely higher than your Magic rating (and it's doubtful that you were a Force 8 Initiate), so the Drain becomes physical instead of stun, and you now have a 14D physical drain to try to whisk away with your willpower. Good luck?

How the fuck can you now summon that shit in 4th edition?

Where earlier SR games were kind of a joyful mess, I have a particular dark spot in my heart for 4th ed. They did one thing very right (switch to static target numbers) and did everything else entirely wrong. Matrix rules are still a nightmare (the in-text introduction to basic hacking took, I shit you not, over 38 dice pool rolls in real life, for a 5 second hack), vehicle rules are borked to the point where riggers are barely existent, and magic/summoning is way overpowered.

Sounds great... New editions of PnP rpgs now all seem to be "let's just make shit completely nonsensical and flashy, so the bros will play it!" Rolleyes

And I won't go into the adventure where you go destroy evil Jew ghosts haunting a concentration camp so you can rescue the mystical knife that was used to experiment on all said Jews during their lifetimes. But that's a real, 4th edition adventure. True story.

Hehe. Well, shitty stories have always existed in every PnP. That's not the fault of the ruleset.

It doesn't allow playing *different* games simultaneously from the same account,

Untrue, I just launched multiple games right now. Unless you mean playing different games on different PCs on the same account at the same time? That's called piracy, and it's an unreasonable request.

It's not that hard to see why Steam doesn't want people to do this (and quite frankly, I doubt that Valve really gives a shit, but publishers obviously don't want this), but it's really easy to get around. Just put your client in offline mode and play. You could play your one purchased copy on a million PCs at the same time if you wanted to.

I am still suspicious of it, though. Because I know that one day (and it is likely quite a long way in the future), either Valve will sell it to Ubi/EA/Actiblizzard, they themselves will become worse than the publishers, or they'll just go out of business.

None of those have anywhere near the money to buy Steam. I think in order to get Valve to even listen you need to start coming up with at least 5 to 10 billion dollars. Really the only player big enough anymore to outright buy Steam would be Microsoft, and investing so heavily in a PC/Linux platform would be diametrically opposed to their entire (retarded) current business strategy. Also, Ubi and EA are investing in their own platform, so it makes no sense for them to buy Steam.

My biggest worry used to be fucking Gamestop buying Steam, but Steam has grown way too big.

And all of those games that I own license through Steam will become useless.

Not really. Download cracks for them and they'll still play absolutely fine. The only thing you'd really lose is the ability to download them, and the auto-patches.

I just keep an offline copy of all my games available, patched to the latest/almost latest version, just for such a scenario.

But I don't think it's really all that likely anymore. Steam is so succesful that it'd be crazy for anyone to buy it and then immediately kill it off. It'd literally be more worthwhile to just take a billion dollars and set it on fire.

and while lately the setting has taken to suckling at the teat of "magic wins EVERYTHING" game design,

It's kind of always been that way, though. In 2nd edition, the only chance a street sam ever stood against a mage was if he won initiative. A stacked Stunbolt 6 would absolutely obliterate any street sam. Obviously the Drain would probably take out the mage as well, but magic was pretty heavily overpowered, especially if you knew how to mitigate Drain.

God, I loved playing a mage in Shadowrun.

The fact they've been able to do this with the small small small budget (for game development) and in such a short time is amazing.

Speculation on my part but this is how I see it. The ~4mil is simply paying salary and overhead. Which 4mil buys a LOT. (Simple math average salary of a dev 50K the 4mil pays for more then 80 people for 1 year. Clearly they don't have 80 people working on it so that 4mil can be stretched for the 2 years or so they plan for development with ~30 people working on it). With that in mind, the company, obsidian will make money on the post KS sales on steam and such with most probably going to into the company coffers and the remainder to perhaps bonuses. If on KS they made 4mil even if they only do 33% of that on steam post-release its over a mil for the company.

If it was me this is how I would pay everyone and make the company money.

Your numbers are a little off:

Take the 4mil, remove 5% kickstarter fee. You're left with 3.8mil. Out of that, expect a good 10% cost of fulfillment for all the rewards (conservative). You're left with about 3.4mil.

Assume average salary at 60k, with a 1.6x total overhead, i.e. salary overhead at 96k a person. Let's go for 100k, a round number. You can now pay 34 people for one year only before your money runs out.

I can pretty much guarantee the team does not have 34 people. 15 people sounds more likely.

Not only that, but several of their stretch goals simply cost a chunk of change. That Orchestral score will probably run a high 5 to low 6 figure check.

Any dev that still thinks that "film grain" is acceptable to use in games should have his fucking hands chopped off. Every single time it's been used, it has looked terrible and the dev wound up having to patch it out or put a toggle in place, and I'd reckon that 99.99999999999% of people turn that shit off.

Film grain is fine on low res, shitty movie screens. It is most definitely NOT fine on extremely detailed resolutions that are used in games.
