No wonder downloads were so shitty fucking slow yesterday. Since I was roughly the only guy at work, I figured I'd download the last 20 or 30 games or so I'd bought and add them to my backup server.

No matter which download server I switched to, I could never get more than ~ 2MB/s. (Checked my company's pipe, and it was basically empty. I was pulling 23MB/s on speed test.)

The modules they work on will see a release. Because the developement of these modules with a certain feature set is already funded.

That's how it should be, yes, but every interview with the guy I read, that seems to not be what he's saying. He seems to be saying that the money NEEDS to keep coming in in order for this game to be made (which goes 100% against what crowdfunding is, eg, you promise to do this for this much money, and you need to deliver what you promised, or something close to it, when you get that money.)

His motto is always "We need more. More, more, more, more, more!"

I have no problem with them GETTING more, but he's said in interviews that the money that keeps coming in is paying his developers essentially from month to month. When in reality, his developers should already be paid up (so to speak) for the next 12-18 months so they can finish what he has been promising up to this point.

I don't see it happening any time soon, but I think if the money well dried up, this project would be in massive, massive trouble, and it wouldn't surprise me one bit to not see much of what was promised actually delivered.

Okay, that does answer my question. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen, but at least they appear to have planned for it. From his interviews, he continuously gives off this vibe like he believes the millions of dollars per month worth of donations will never end.

I like that in his original Kickstarter he said that 6 million would allow them to make the game with all bells and whistles they'd ever envisioned, and now he's talking about "hundreds of millions."

But there's no feature creep.

I found this interview pretty interesting on PC gamer.

I start by asking if the money raised is enough. “It’s never enough!” he laughs. “We scale development according to how much money is coming in. The level of support dictates our level of ambition. This is a huge open-world game where you can go from planet to planet, so we could spend hundreds of millions of dollars on it quite easily.”

How that doesn't worry the fuck out of people, I have no idea. This is a crowdfunded game. The money he has raised so far should be enough to make (most of) the game he has promised, because otherwise he has blatantly been lying about what you're funding.

And yet at every chance, he keeps almost bragging that they don't have enough money, that it's never enough, etc etc etc. So what happens if, somehow, all the money stops coming in tomorrow? That everyone in the world unanimously decides "You know what? I've spent enough on a non-existant game. Deliver something before I spend more." Would they even deliver a finished product? Or would they pull a Double Fine and close up shop two months down the road with a "Sorry, the money well has gone dry, so we're stopping?"

The fact that he apparently flies up and down to all his different dev studios (who are scattered all over) to "meet face to face" with his studio heads every month, presumably paid for from all the money donated that's supposed to go into the game, would piss me off to no end had I donated any substantial amount of money.

If it ever gets finished and is good, I'll gladly buy a copy, but by now I think people are just throwing money at it in gaming's most massive Sunk Cost Fallacy ever witnessed.

Why would a data-jockey be required to have such an extreme level of fitness? That makes literally no sense, so it would not surprising if that is the Army's current take on it, apparently.

This won't achieve shit as Dice/EA don't give a flying fuck about server admins. On the flipside, I do agree with them that if they don't do anything at all, it's pretty much a guarantee that nothing will change. So kudos for trying.

Here's how you make Dice and EA take notice: DON'T BUY THE NEXT FUCKING BATTLEFIELD GAME. Or at least wait until they've patched it 42 times and it's marginally playable.

It was roughly 30 years ago since I last took any German classes in school, so I happily attribute the snafu to my failing memory.

And the cases were fucking nightmare for me. I didn't have an issue with making sentences and figuring out tenses and proper grammar etc, since Dutch and German are quite a bit alike anyway, but after I'd written the sentence I'd always have to spend like a minute trying to figure out the proper fucking case.

I've studied English, Dutch, French and German.

There are some complex things in English (in very, very advanced English), but by and large it has a fairly clearly defined ruleset and sticks to it. Verbs usually go together, for example. On a basic level, English is very simple.

Now try Dutch. Verbs go "wherever they sound right." How do you know whether it sounds right? Well, it just does. But if you think it sounds right to you and doesn't to most others? Then you obviously got it wrong.

And then if you turn a word into a smaller version of itself by adding "tje" at the end, the definite article sometimes changes because... reasons? It's De Stoel (the chair), but Het Stoeltje. (the little chair.)

As for pronunciation, heh. Try saying Scheveningen. Here is an absolutely wonderful video of a poor girl trying to pronounce some of the marvelous words the Dutch language has. And let me say that for someone not born a native Dutch speaker, she probably does it better than 99.999999999% of the rest of the world, but she is still incredibly off on some words (Schreeuw really seems to mess her up.)

Or, let's speak about "D and T". Words that end in a "T" sound can be spelled with either a D or a T at the end. Depending which one you use in based on whether it's plural, single, what tense you use, etc. And then there are words that will have a D AND a t. Ik Word. (I become), jij Wordt (you become).

And then if you go into a particular past indicative/subjunctive, whether something is spelled with a D or a T has to do with 'T Kofschip. If the word ends in a consonant that's not in 'T Kofschip, it gets a D. Otherwise it gets a T. Makes sense, right?

(I loved this particular exception at the end: Because of the idiosyncrasies of Dutch spelling, some forms are spelled in unexpected ways. The past tense forms of proeven and blozen are written with f and s, as Dutch spelling rules permit the letters v and z only at the beginning of a syllable; however the pronunciation remains /v/ and /z/. Words may not end in a double consonant, so the past participles gerust, geland and gered do not get an additional -d.)


Or how about the joy of German that's the Four Cases. Memorizing those four fucking tables and then applying them correctly drove me insane in high school.

(Eraser, did this change or something? I seem to remember me having learned a different table in school. Der Des Dem Den; Die Der Den Die; Das Des Dem Das as the first three? Probably my memory is just faulty. The weird thing is that if you google it, it auto-populates to Der Des Dem Den, and several of the links on the first page mention Der Des Dem Den, yet this page says it's Der Den Dem Des?)


So, I'm gonna go ahead and disagree. English is incredibly easy to learn. I spoke FLUENT (not FLUID, dammit!) English by the time I was 12, and it wasn't spoken in my home. Try finding a kid who speaks fluent Dutch by 12 who didn't speak it at home. That girl whose video I linked to earlier is actually pretty damn amazing in how well she speaks Dutch. She has a video where she does the whole thing in Dutch, and she actually does entire sentences without making a grammatical mistake, which is AMAZING. I've yet to meet a non-native Dutch speaker who can do an entire complex sentence without fucking up the grammar somewhere. And you can see how badly she struggles with trying to make these sentences, and judging by the dates on her videos, she's been trying to learn Dutch for the past 10+ years.

English can be very complex at its most advanced. There are some rules in English that I've never even heard of, and I'd like to think my English is pretty damn good, seeing as how I write books in it and all. But English is incredibly easy to become somewhat proficient in to the point where you can go to an english speaker and at least make yourself understood.

It'll never be as difficult as a language that does a lot of things really without rules but "well, that's just the way it IS."
