But allow young jimmie to buy a game rated M for Mature, download a mod and use a secret password that shows a pixelated sex scene, and all the right wing freaks go batshit crazy.

Hillary Clinton is a right wing freak?

Clinton, D-N.Y., is asking the Federal Trade Commission to probe how users of the game can access "graphic pornographic and violent content" for the game from the Internet.
(snip)
In that speech to media experts and child advocates, she singled out "Grand Theft Auto" as particularly harmful, saying it "has so many demeaning messages about women and so encourages violent imagination and activities and it scares parents…. They're playing a game that encourages them to have sex with prostitutes and then murder them. You know, that's kind of hard to digest."

72. Gamespot Exclusive? Jun 7, 2005, 23:44 Xoxotl

According to Battlefield Nation (http://www.bfnation.net/), it seems that the demo may be releases exclusively on GameSpot's GameCenter service (available to GameSpot Complete subscribers). God, I hope note. I can't stand GameSpot.

EDIT: Grammer.

So why don't a few of you shut your pie holes and wait for some video/screenshots/demo of the game first before making such assanine comments.

Wow, you're one dedicated fanatical fanboy enthusiast.

10. Hope for the best... Jan 2, 2005, 16:53 Xoxotl

...but expect the worst.

The best SW games had to be Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight and Knights of the Old Republic, with the top place going to TIE Fighter. Everything else pretty much blows.

And don't get me started on Galaxies.

I sure hope this isn't Rebellion 2.

This is a big "screw you!" to those of us who actually purchased and registered GalCiv (without the expansion pack).

I did have Altarian Prophecy on my Christmas list, but I took it off, and asked my family, if they purchased it, to return it before Christmas. And I will not be purchasing GalCiv2.

Good job, Stardock! Keep trying harder to take a dump all over your established customer base!

Okay, maybe I'm missing something, but clicking on the link above about the "Spam King" leads me to a story about US/Japanese Beef Trading.

Does anybody have a link for the demo? When I try to download the demo from Gamespot (even after I log in), the stupid "Java" download link doesn't work.

God, I hate Gamespot.

Given that DX:IW as been Xbox'ed dumbed down, I'm giving this one a pass.

Based on what I saw in the Demo... I'll pass on this one. If somebody wants to give it to me as a Christmas gift, fine, but I ain't buying it.

Pah.

But, hey, the original Deus Ex GotY Edition is being given away, free, on the latest Computer Gaming World CD-ROM. I'll just re-install that and have alot more fun with it.

Gameplay depth. Interesting concept, no?

155. Re: OMG! Nov 22, 2003, 22:54 Xoxotl

And gosh, I guess I missed the memo where every FPS game must have locational damage. Maybe it wasn't added so it wouldn't turn into a shoulders/head shot CS fest.

Lame explanation. The reason every other FPS has locational damage is because it greatly enhances the game. C'mon... this is 2003 for God's sake. If I walk up to somebody in DX:IW and put a burst of 9mm fire into the face and through their brain-pan with my Mako pistol, I expect them to die. Not whip out their own gun and return fire.

Right now, it appears that no matter where I place my shots, it's the same. And that's silly. Why should hits "right between the eyes" have the same effect as a burst into a enemy's re-enforced metal main body armor breastplate? (If they were wearing a helmet with an enclosed face shield, I can understand it.)

And, lord, you have no idea how much that "Unified Ammo" concept bugs me. It feels like a Xbox "shortcut" to make the game easier to play. In DX1, creeping around and looking for another clip of Traq Darts or one more Scramble Grenade was always an important part of the game. The part in DX1 where you managed to break into the MJ12/UNATCO armory and stock up on all the ammo you could carry felt like "a kid in a candy store". Now, with a "one-size-fits-all" ammo source, you don't have to worry about it anymore!

Again, I realize that this is supposed to be The Future, but it just seems so sloppy. Hell, it's almost 2004 and makers of personal electronics can't standardize on a battery size, much less anything else. It seems silly that after the post-apocalyptic "Collapse", all the major gun manufacturers will agree on some sort of super nano-ammo for their weapons.

126. What were they smoking? Nov 22, 2003, 18:12 Xoxotl

I won't get into a bitch-fest, but I'll say I was, ahem, disappointed by the demo.

But what really stands out:
  • No locational damage.

  • A uniform single ammo supply

  • I realize that this is supposed to be The Future, but it's a little hard to suspend disbelief when they're asking me to assume that the pistol, shotgun, flamethrower, and shock prod all have a common pool ammo source.

    >Fileplanet people pay so that they don't have to wait in
    >line for 3 hours to download things, and with high speeds

Okay. Fine. You wanna pay for the bandwidth so you don't have to wait in line, that's fine. If I wanted to download the demo from FilePlanet, and they told me "You gotta wait in line for three hours on our public servers and watch ads while you wait", fine. That's fair.

But to say "only our elite members can download and play the demo at all, because you need a special activation key", well, that's stupid. Sure, those foolish enough to pay for FilePlanet subscriptions are made happy, but for those of use who don't have FP subscriptions, it has two effects:
    1) Angers us at GameSpy, assuring that we will NEVER get FP subscriptions.
    2) Angers us at Microsoft, as they're trying to screw the consumer AGAIN, even if in the short term, by trying to make you pay for something which is traditionally try.

As a wage-earning, tax-paying adult, I realize that I have limited funds on which to spend on my hobby. I now choose not to spend these funds on Freelancer. I will take my business elsewhere.

Hey, nothing like alienating everybody who's not a FilePlanet subscriber.

I was on the fence in the beginning about Freelancer. Now they're telling me that I gotta be a FilePlanet subscriber to try the demo. They could go fark themselves.

Just like Microsoft. When you click on a link to the movie, Media Player errors out with "The path to the media file is incorrect". It would be too easy to let people (gasp!) download the files to their hard drive and watch them at their leisure.

Oi. I just finished the demo, and I have to agree. The demo was choppy and appeared to have a major memory leak. Even when I exited out, Windows XP was sluggy and jumpy. I had to restart.

Gameplay wise... eh, nothing special. I've played better Half-Life mods.
