Yeah so? What does that have to do with anything? I should let my choice based on the situation dictate my actions. Sometimes fighting is the better solution. I shouldn't have to choose to avoid combat just because it's poorly implemented. My point is that combat isn't your only choice. As such, the combat being dull shouldn't stop you from playing the game since combat is mostly optional and the game offers many equally (or even more) viable ways to progress.
Most hybrid action/stealth/RPGs have lackluster combat. System Shock 2, Deus Ex and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines come to mind. However, to cast those games aside simply because of their combat is completely missing the point of why those games exist. That's a good point, and I agree with your examples. I do prefer the "play smart" approach over brute force, but in my experience with the game, combat in NV is very hard to avoid, and because of that, it really puts the game's biggest weakness right in my face(aside from the terrible UI - yeah I know there are mods for that, but even those don't address all my gripes.) I've heard over and over again what a great and compelling RPG it is, but every time I try to give it another chance, I end up feeling more annoyed than I'm willing to put up with, so I put it back on the shelf. |

I agree. I've tried multiple times to get into this game.. I can forgive the terrible models and animations, but the combat is just dull. You do realize you can talk and/or sneak your way through most of the game, right? Yeah so? What does that have to do with anything? I should let my choice based on the situation dictate my actions. | What do you mean? Timing has everything to do with it. How can you trust an effusively cock-gobbling review that gives the game a 90+ percent rating based on what is going to be a beta at best? The real reviews from trusted sites should based on the retail version, and only after putting some real man-hours into playing it, not just rushing to be the first out there to get their review posted. |

| That's my point. Actually, those are two of the premier gaming sites (or at least the used to be). Just goes to show that you can't trust those early reviews. They just seem to be the editorial equivalent of "FIRST POST!!!11" |

I think that's exactly how I feel. I want to like Obsidian because Feargus Urquhart and Chris Avellone helped create some of my favorite gaming experiences of all time: Planescape Torment, Fallout 1 & 2, Icewind Dale, but Obsidian just hasn't been able to recapture that magic.
I have to admit that pretty much everything I've played from them has been a disappointment to some degree - not just because of the ubiquitous bugs, but from some poor design decisions (the terrible camera controls in NWN2 comes to mind.)
To me Obsidian epitomizes unrealized potential. |

I don't recall it being all that buggy, but the long loading times were definitely an issue. Give them props for tackling that problem, cleaning up remaining bugs, and releasing a free enhanced edition. Most other companies would have bundled that up, called it a GOTY edition, and asked for more money.
I trust them to do a great job with the sequel. |

I think you misinterpreted. He was saying that in spite of the flaws in the game as a result of the short development time, there was some good to come of it, although he doesn't expect most people to see that... I think.
Not that he says much of anything useful in this interview really. |

I never trust day one reviews.
I can say, after playing through the first four chapters, that while it's fun and there are some cool new puzzle elements, it just hasn't quite recaptured the magic and novelty of the first one, but I suppose that's to be expected.
Still, I'm having fun. The game runs great, the broken-down environments are fun to look at, and many of the puzzles are a lot trickier than in the first one. The dialog just doesn't seem as clever or inspired though.
Haven't tried co-op yet though, but I'm really looking forward to it. |

DAOC was a great game, so you do gotta give Mythic credit for that. Three way RvR made for some of my fondest gaming moments to this day. As far as Warhammer goes, yeah it failed, but so did pretty much every other MMO that tried to dethrone WoW at the time.
All that aside, I'd love to see a well-made Ultima 4 remake. As long as it comes out for Xbox and PS3 and is then poorly ported to PC, includes draconian DRM, and offers seperate DLC that includes Castle Britannia and Iolo. Yeah, that's what gamers want! |

That DA2 review by RPG Codex pretty much confirmed my worst fears for the game, and made me glad I resisted the urge to buy it. I was planning on buying it on the cheap whenever they GOTY bundle it, but I may not even bother with that.
What it does illustrate though is one of the biggest problems in gaming today: the circle jerk of gaming sites and magazines that have traded the objective critique for the inexplicably positive day zero review in order to stay in the good graces of the big devs/publishers and maintain the cycle of bullshit, favoritism, advertising revenue, etc.
By now people should know that a real review doesn’t come in until someone has had time to actually sit through the game, organize their thoughts and offer some real analysis on the pros and cons of the games – in other words, a review that may not come in until a month or so after the game is released. But the way it is now, that review – as honest and accurate as it may be – doesn’t matter. The developers already have your money, and if you don’t like it, tough shit.
If people want games to improve and not feel ripped of (like I’m sure I lot of people do who bought DA2) then the ONLY thing you can do is speak with your wallet. Stop preordering or buying without reading the objective and honest reviews. Make sure that the developers know that if they want your money they are going to have to earn it by producing a quality product. If nothing else, EA/Bioware has shown that it’s a mistake to trust a gaming company based on reputation alone. Face it; the Bioware that made the classic RPGs of the past is dead and gone. |
