I agree, the updates have been bringing good new functionality to the PS3. It's still too expensive, and it's still a couple of months away from getting enough good games for me to suggest it to other people, but I'm quite happy with it.
Now, once LittleBigPlanet hits, you won't be able to pry me away from it anymore

What impressed me were:
1) Lighting effects (I can still see the fan casting its shadow in my mind)
2) Water effects (that waterfall when you get outside the prison ship? Awesome)
In other words, I thought it was much prettier than Quake. But I never liked the feel of it. There was something about the controls, the movements, the weapons that just didn't click.

Yeah well... new graphics alone won't cut it. I can still play the old SC--and I love it--so they'll have to persuade me that what I'm getting is more than a graphics and missions pack.

SATA drives... like the ones you can just plug into any PS3?
(I know, those take laptop drives, but those are still a heck of a lot cheaper than the 360 offerings.)

So am I. I don't have any BC issues as it is, but the background downloading should help; it's a pain right now. Still, I think even with the update you can't actually play a game, just browse the media bar, internet, etc.

You misunderstand.
GT HD was going to be a micro-transaction game. Luckily, they canned the idea and just gave it out freely as a one-track, eight-car demo of the engine, which will ALSO power GT5, which is a full-blown GT game like the previous ones in the series.
On another issue: DAMN! LittleBigPlanet is going to rock on toast.

I'm a happy PS3 owner, and even I agree that that's complete and utter bullshit.
And yes, bring on more games! It's a good thing I still have some excellent PS2 games to hold me over.

Apparently every self-declared expert already knows how well the backward compatibility will work.
And here I was thinking that it would remain to be seen what state it's in, including the new firmware update, when it's released. Silly me.

As TB said initially, this doesn't come out of the blue. In fact, future US versions of the PS3 will also come without those chips. That was the plan all along.
Even though I don't have citations now, I believe he's right about using the emulation to play the classic PS games you can download. Doesn't matter to me if anyone else thinks that's BS, so don't expect me to argue about it.
But I disagree that this will provide more options to EU people: the US versions will eventually switch over to software emulation as well. Again, that was planned.
They *could* then implement higher output resolutions, advanced filtering, and so on, but *that* would all be speculation.

If you read that thing and comments, you'll realize the challenge was from January. Some people still might have found PS3s then, but it was not like it is now.
