I think its fair to predict you'll need a hog of a machine to play Doom3 looking nice, but these benchmarks from weeks ago show what fps to expect.
Without knowing the ins and outs of the game code I can guess that multiplayer will need more resources because of the realtime lighting on all the player models at once (or would this be no different to enemy bot models?). But I would think these benchmarks are still going to be accurate with the current build.
They're the most scientific evidence of frame-rates we have to go on to date anyway.

What's the point to develop today's games with such an engine (D3) that can't render open spaces fast enough on today's latest hardware?
Maybe it can. And if it can't they'll have to use a different engine. Some engines are better than others for certain things. A developer looking to license just needs to make the right choice.

The whole reason NVidia fell behind was because they lost a development cycle while faffing around with the gfx chip for the X-Box.
So now ATI are working on the next chip. They will have to be very careful not to lose their marginal lead over NVidia.
ATI have done well to turn the heads of gamers who've only ever have Geforce X's in their machines - it would be a shame for them to lose out by over-investing resources away from the PC market.
Getting involved in this kind of development could be a kiss of death.

Has the Homelan article been pulled as well?? I can't get into the MF. It might just be due to traffic I spose.
Hope its not been pulled. Homelan seem to work pretty hard for their exclusives so I'd say they deserve to get this instead of Eurogamer.

As a multiplayer game and engine i think Q3 was pretty much universally respected. The single player aspect, with its ropey AI was undoubtedly crap but I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks Quake 3 is still the best netcoded game there is. As for multiplayer on D3 - it was sounding dismal (although I've not read anywhere its peer-to-peer only) until they announced they were handing it over to Splash Damage.
All that said, I'll be expecting a good demo. Same goes for HL2. No demo, no purchase!

I like deathmatch.
There's no hiding crappy netcode or unbalanced weapons in decent deathmatch. On the surface a developer chucking in DM as a gametype is probably a bit of a 10 minute job (so to speak), but if the tech is shoddy then the player will notice it immediately. This might not be the case in a more methodical team-based objective game type.

Theres that overly bright enemy models thing in Kreed again. I'm sure its just a basic config tweak to fix it, but it really ruins the reality of the screenies.
Gah, if only they'd asked me to quality check them before posting....

This all just means I'll get more for my money when I finally upgrade (about the day D3 goes gold). The rig I've had for over a year now still pisses thru every game I throw at it, and to be honest I'm expecting HL2 to play fine on it as well.
As someone already said, its the gfx card companies that will feel the sting from this. I can't really see that anyone needs a gfx card faster than about a GF3 just yet.
IMO NVIDIA and ATI should just concentrate on their bog standard ranges for the time-being - the underpowered cheapy cards that end up in Dell PCs for instance. Work on that market-share. These current 256 meg cards and that bloody hairdrier are all just a waste of money atm.

The majority of the tests on Toms hardware have the 5900 ultra coming out on top. For instance these Doom3 ones: http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030512/geforce_fx_5900-11.html
It also comes up tops in serious sam 2, UT2003 and 3DMark03
A lot probably depends on the rig and the resolution/FSAA etc.
Undoubtedly the tests can be run with a bias towards one or the other developer coming out on top.
The date of the benchmarking article you posted, WW3 was two months earlier than the Tomshardware one. Maybe the drivers had improved in that time.
My point about not buying either card any time soon though still stands

A free official add-on - sounds good to me. Personally I found the single player game to be a bit tedious. The no MP thing was a real let-down, particularly as there was nothing in the SP game that made me want to go a replay any sections. I can't imagine it'll revive sales in the base game by any great margin, but if its to reward the peeps who bought the game in the first place - despite the appalling reviews and the 'no demo' debacle - then I think thats pretty cool of them.

I used to swear by Barry White as background music for clan games in the Quake 2 days.
Its a sad day.
Those who know his music well will be aware that we've lost one of the greatest songwriters of the last three or so decades.

The reviews I'm reading have Nvidia ahead on pretty much everything, but not by much.
To be honest though both companies are just tossing off as far as I'm concerned.
When Doom3 goes gold I'll be looking to upgrade. Until then my rig should handle pretty much anything. I know they have to pay their bills, but for me there's no real point in either company releasing any new boards until D3 is imminent.

Nvidia confirms that its latest high-end graphics card will be available in stores across North America in time for the July 4 weekend.
I can confirm it'll be half price on Ebay by the time anyone releases a game that needs it

Was disappointed to see the 'clothes' section doesn't include some Quake Gaming Pants (known as gaming underpants to you American readers). I've spent many a hot summer evening gaming in just my pants and I'm sure I'm not the only one. They could make some that are like black Speedos, but with the Q3 symbol where the Speedo logo usually resides. mmmmmmm

Does sound interesting. Fairly recently I decided to have a pop at completing the SP Base Q3 game on nightmare difficulty. I was quickly reminded how predictable the AI is. Their aiming was inhuman, but the bots were otherwise pretty mindless.
The feature list of this mod looks to have remedied matters, although it does beg the question of how such shite AI made it into the game in the first place - particularly for a game like Q3 that was always going to appeal to hardcore gamers.
