Idiots are no fun to play with and there are a great many on the CIG forums.
Join the Bluesnews organization and let's have some fun - whenever the games does come out.

El Pit
I doubt that AC- or CoD-fans backed this, but Wing Comannder fans did. So how about sticking to the vision of making a great sequel to Wing Commander/Starlancer?
You're right. Most AC or COD fans would not back this game. That's why I did - so that it could be made and perhaps a new generation of gamers could get a chance to play an immersive space sim.

I have also enjoyed the community videos etc. and already feel I have received significant value for my pledge to date.

REALLY?! I gave CIG money for a game, not to make videos about making a game. I know and respect this as a bonus for fans, but it in no way makes me feel like have received ANY value for my pledge FOR A GAME

My subscription ($20/month) pays for the community content-and yes I think I get my money's worth.

Quboid
Really? How much have you spent and what exactly have you received? Also, why did you have to choose between Star Citizen, Assassin's Creed or COD?

I have diverted monies that may have gone to AC XXX or to COD N+1 to Star Citizen - which is my prerogative. My pledge amount is really none of your business, but I give more to charity than I do to SC if that helps allay your concerns about my money.

dsmart
Yes, but they were never billed as being developed for the masses. And that hasn't changed since the first game.

Absolutely-and I admire your adherence to your vision.

This is the sort of thing that really irks me. People see all this crap online, not getting the context, then try to form an opinion based on third-party tainted information. Whatever.

I wrote an entire blog about it last month.

The fact is that I simply don't let people get away with harassing and/or bullying me. It's really the long and short of it. No exceptions.

Derek, I have read your posts on Usenet, Quarter to Three, PlanetCrap, Something Awful, Steam etc. in their entirety and with all of the context. True, there are a lot of idiots that go after you, but you are not a very nice guy to people that disagree with you or question some of your assertions. My opinion on this really does not matter, but I don't like boorish behaviour and you demonstrate that on a regular basis. Hence, my decision to no longer purchase or play your games. No exceptions.

You're still young, aren't you?

I am pretty much your age.

I am thrilled that this medium is being pushed forward after a few years where the only innovation seemed to be indie platformers. The revival of X-Com, Torment, Fallout, Elite etc. has revitalized my interest and investment in the PC as a gaming platform.

Star Citizen could be an absolute flop, but I am still happy to be a part of whatever the hell it turns out to be. This project has kindled the same excitement I felt when I played Elite as a ten year old - more than worth my pledge.
Others may feel betrayed or disappointed by SC's development path, but just because others (like me) do not does not mean there is a need to attack or belittle by using terms like White Knights and trolls. It just dumbs down the conversation.
After all, it's just a game guys

I am still very glad I backed this project. From my perspective, throwing money at a vision is a better use of my funds than buying another iteration of Assassin's Creed and COD. I have also enjoyed the community videos etc. and already feel I have received significant value for my pledge to date. The game is shaping up as I had hoped when I signed up back in 2012.

Derek, I always found your games innovative, but ultimately impenetrable-which is not necessarily a negative. While your ambition has always been admirable (and one of the reasons that I love the PC as a gaming platform), your attitude towards your consumer base, critics and people in general I find so unpalatable that I will no longer purchase or even try any more of your products. Sorry, I just don't like mean people.

I don't understand the general gaming rage and vitriol that plagues the internet as I think that such passion and energy could be channeled into more productive avenues than at a form of entertainment. 1st world problems etc.

So much rage.

I backed this game as I am interested in not only the genre, but also in pushing gaming forward. I am not really into TF2 hats or COD:BLOPS XX-although I did enjoy the original franchises.
I am well aware that the money I have given may end up going to something I dislike, but I have already enjoyed the ride and consider the experience to date very worthwhile.
And if SC ends up a spectacular failure-at least it will have been spectacular, instead of mediocre, like gaming seems content to relegate itself to.
Sure, cheap dime store novels are a quick read and entertaining, but sometimes I like something more.
With so much ex-Origin talent on board this project, I feel like whatever they produce, it will be notable. Every Origin game I played was interesting and tried to push the creative and technical boundaries-even the games I did not like much.
Gaming was getting stale (with some exceptions in my opinion like Bioshock) and I like the vigour and intensity that this game is provoking-even from detractors and doubters.
Let's sit back and enjoy ourselves.

One other thing we should note about Star Citizen - Chris Roberts has a pretty huge fan-base in Europe (especially Germany). I knew people that worked at Digital Anvil and they told me about how rabid the fan-base was for CR in Europe and they were shocked at amount of fan mail and sales they would get from those geographies. The worldwide appeal of this particular crowd-source should not be underestimated.

As to Squadron 42, CIG has stated a desire to avoid spoilers so they have deliberately been quiet about that aspect of the Star Citizen experience. Sure, the forum crowd is excited about the MMO elements-but has there really been space combat MMO to date? Eve, Earth and Beyond and the Star Wars MMOs (shudder) have had space combat - but nothing as immersive as what is being planned for SC. Jumpgate was pretty close - but they could never get critical mass - even though I personally really enjoyed that game.
People want to fly in space - in a first-person mode that captures the "tramp freighter" or rag-tag pirate feel...I think CIG is going to deliver something very unique - and I miss the days when so many PC games tried something unique. I am glad I backed this one.

Yeah the new site is a little disjointed and not everything is live yet. The site was getting pounded this morning, but seems to be better now that they doubled the server count. A good place to get some good background are the forums - there are some very informative stickies there.

Epic is simply not interested in the PC platform just as they are no longer interested in creating original, fun games that take chances and push the boundaries of the medium.
They are the Michael Bay of game developers. Lots of flash, but no substance, originality, or soul.
