seems that every ftp site i connect to in it requires a password for the dir command though

Login as anonymous, and enter an e-mail as password. Standard anonymous ftp stuff that your browser hides from you when looking at an ftp site in it. Yeah, it is a lot less hassle, but on the other hand I'd rather have the browser I want (Opera) than the browser I don't want (IE).

Thank god for them finally removing the CD-Check. As it was the only way I could play the game was by using a crack as the CD-check they used caused the game to lock on my system.

I wonder if this is partly why they decided to remove the CD-check this early in the game's lifespan (it's still a relatively new game).

i was sorta hoping that ottawa would make it to the last round since their franchise desperately needs a cup to possibly save itself from financial trouble.

Well now that we're totally off topic, yeah I'm hoping the sens go to the final as well. They're actually my pick to win the east. I'm still a bit undecided about the west, since I live in BC I'm pulling for the Canucks, but can't see them getting past Dallas.

edit: i dont think theres an ftp command line in xp.

Well, I'm using XP Home and when I open up the command prompt and type "FTP", I get the usual ftp prompt. Doesn't seemt to work right, but that's probably because I'm behind a proxy & firewall.

There have been studies, such as the Kellerman study, that attempted to prove that you are more likely to be harmed if you posess a gun, but they have been shown to have used a very flawed methodology and were therefore quite misleading.

Well look at it this way, how can you be injured/killed by your own gun if you don't have one?

Well, it's not exactly the kind of thing that police departments and governments like to brag about, ya know?

Sure, and while I said that I've never heard of anything like it in Canada, I'm not saying that because of that that I'm sure that nothing like that has happened in Canada. Scary stuff at any rate.

School shootings are exceedingly rare. They just get a massive amount of media attention when they happen.

Very true. Good point. (don't get me started on media manipulation/sensationalization or this thread will end up with 100's of messages ;P)

Hopefully you'll never be a victim. But then it only takes one time. I hope I never have to defend myself against an attacker. But if it ever does happen, I'd rather be as prepared as possible. I only get one life.

Unless you believe in reincarnation. Seriously though, no I see your point, but like I said in my earlier message I don't feel that carrying a gun will make me any safer than I would be without one, and would in fact make me feel less safe. Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

if no browser shipped with windows, how would you download a browser ...

Actually I had to do this once, back in the days when I was using Netscape with Win95 without IE. Ended up using the FTP command-line client that comes with Windows. Not pretty but it worked.

...or anything on a new system without having it on cd or something? when you opera users make a clean install of windows how do you download your free copy of opera?

That's what CD burners are for silly.

By the way the Sens are so going to kick the Flyers' asses.

Care to provide some evidence of these studies?

http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcdguse.html
There's 2 other links that I want to post as well, but can't find them at the moment. Probably bookmarked on my home puter. I'll edit and add them later if I find them.

I think this is a case of misunderstanding on my part, I took your original comments a bit differently, and what I was asking for when I asked for evidence was something to back the claim "there is no evidence to support the idea that having a gun makes it more likely for a gun to be used against you." Just because the vast majority of gun use is by people defending themselves does not render the claim that "gun ownership makes it more likely the gun will be used against you" false.

I also read the other link you provided in regards to police not protecting us. All I can say is that I'm glad I don't live in the US, as I've never heard of anything even close to being as bad as some of the claims made in that article (which seems well backed up with sources) happening in Canada.

The only real problem I have from a rhetorical or content point of view about the article, is that it tries to imply that if your safety is threatened and a cop is standing nearby he/she will ignore you and let you be beat/killed/whatever. Again, I don't live in the US, but I somehow doubt that this is the case.

Ultimately though, I don't think you and I will see eye-to-eye on this issue, and much of that reason comes from the differences in the societies in which we live. I don't live in fear of someone mugging me on the street. If I went to a high school I wouldn't be afraid because a student might have a gun and go postal. Perhaps that's naive, but I have never seen anything happen in my society to make me believe that my safety was ever in jeopardy. So I don't see why owning a gun is necessary, or even desirable, to provide for my safety. All the information you've provided me has lead me to believe that this is not the case in the US.

I'm not sure what Canadian law says on the subject, but here in the US the police are not required to defend us...

This reminds me of a recent episode of the Simpsons, where somebody's trying to kill Homer and he goes to the cops. Chief Wiggam says "where does it say on my badge that I have to protect you?" and the other cop points to the second word on his badge which reads "To protect & serve". Well, I won't comment on the links because I haven't had a chance to read them yet. As for Canadian law, well, I can't say I'm a legal scholar, so I'd guess that cops are required to protect us, but I could be wrong.

There's 2 other links that I want to post as well....

Please do post them, I'd be interested in reading them.

First of all, those means do not inspire fear or at least caution just from being displayed....

Hmm, okay I see your point. The thing is though that whenever a confrontation involves a firearm there is a much greater chance that the confrontation will end with one party or another dead or at the very least seriously injured. So perhaps I'm not giving the self-defence argument enough credit, but I'm not convinced that we live in such a society that the need to carry a firearm is necessary to ensure my safety (but then again, you and I live in different societies).

22. Re: Opera spyware Apr 22, 2003, 19:57 Pedle Zelnip

I use IE and ALT-TAB works fine for me...

True enough, but the problem with IE & ALT+TABing is that each window adds an item to the taskbar. Isn't so much a big deal when you're only browsing, but quite often I'll have Opera open with a few sites, my e-mail client, and maybe a few other programs open at the same time, so the the tabbed browsing helps in situations like this (as all sites appear as only one tab on the taskbar, so it's easy to switch between Opera & my e-mail client for example). Minor feature, but on the whole this is why I like Opera better. There isn't really one killer feature that sets it above the rest, but rather on the whole it seems to be a much better designed browser.

As for IE installing programs, well it does ask to install things....

As someone else pointed out, some web designers are getting a little less ethical than normal, and doing stuff like clicking no means yes, etc. I'm not sure Opera's the answer to this, as you still get the "Accept/Deny" type security warnings while browsing with Opera.

I considered trying a different browser before, but didn't see a need for it....

I can kinda understand this, but as the saying goes, "you don't know what you're missing". Unless you've tried both, I don't see how anyone can say one is better than another. On the other hand though, one of the reasons I haven't already tried Phoenix/Firebird/whatever is because of the problems Mozilla caused for me the last time I tried it out, so I can understand the tendancy to err on the side of not trying something out. If for no other reason, I'd recommend giving Opera (or any IE alternative) a try because the "IE comes with Windows so I use it" thinking tends to stifle innovation and competition (remember that little anti-trust suit a while back?).

It's handguns that have next to no purpose besides killing people. I know some people go shooting animals with handguns ...

See my original post, I said: "no other purpose than to kill (perhaps not people, but if not people then animals)" So I'll grant you that some guns are meant more for killing animals, but that doesn't change the meaning behind my statement that the purpose of guns is to kill (either humans, animals, or some other living creature). (In case you hadn't guessed I'm not exactly pro-hunting either ;))

Every study that has been done, whether by pro-gun groups, anti-gun groups, or law enforcement agencies has shown self-defense uses of guns to FAR excede the number of homicides and accidents

Care to provide some evidence of these studies? Define "self-defense uses" as well. If I go to a shooting range and fire off some guns, does that qualify as self-defense uses, as I'm (supposedly) practicing for the time when I may have to defend myself. And how can simply owning a gun be an "effective deterrent to violence"?

Aside from all this though, why is a gun the most effective form of self-defence? Why not non-lethal means, such as pepper spray, etc?

I suppose we're getting off topic here, but being from Canada I have a problem with the "right to bear arms" mentality, as I can see no reasonable justification to owning a firearm.

We are responsible for defending ourselves here in the US. Nobody else is willing to take on that responsibility

Well, there is this group of people, perhaps you've heard of them, they're called the police department? </sarcasm>

Sorry for the sarcasm, but I'm sorry I just don't believe in having a right to own a gun for reasons of self-defence. Even if you do think a gun is useful for self-defence purposes, still doesn't change the fact it's too easy to get a gun in the US.

Well, to start I'll begin by saying I haven't yet seen bowling, or any of Moore's other films, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

In regards to the Forbes piece:

The comment that the kids didn't go bowling so the title is flawed completely misses the point. I don't think Moore (or anyone else) truly believed that the kids went nuts because they bowled that morning, but rather Moore's playing with the idea of the post hoc fallacy that just because something happens before something, it follows that the prior event was the cause of something. For example:

"I ate bacon & eggs before I got that A on the test, so therefore the bacon & eggs were what caused me to get the A"

Obviously this is ridiculous, but the mass media sure seemed to be hopping on a lot of equally ridiculous causes for Columbine (such as playing DOOM, listening to Marilyn Manson, etc). And I think the title "Bowling for Columbine" is a parody of this silliness of the mass media.

The welfare story is a valid criticism, and seems to be one that is echoed a lot by not only Moore critics, but (oddly enough) even many Moore supporters. The criticism being that Moore distorts or leaves out facts to make stories fit his point-of-view. However, I think this criticism can be leveled not only at Moore, but the vast majority of journalists as well. I'm not saying this is an excuse for Moore's actions, I'm just saying distorting/leaving out facts is more commonplace than I think a lot of people would like to believe.

The talk about the bank & the gun completely misses the point. I don't care if the bank did a background check or not, using guns as a promotional tool is truly bizarre and twisted.

There was also a commment earlier to the effect of many stabbings occuring in Britain, as to support the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" position. The thing is though, guns have no other purpose than to kill (perhaps not people, but if not people then animals). That is the relevent dissimilarity between guns, and say knives.

Anyways, sorry for the length of this post. I have a cold, and needed something to do.

I view web pages with it. It works fine. What am I supposed to do with it?

Hehe, good point. I remember a while back on one of the other Blue's threads there was an IE vs Opera debate, and one of the big points brought up was something like "Well my browser loads in 3 seconds instead of 5". Think about that, is a difference of literally a few seconds even worth thinking about?

I'm still sticking with Opera myself, I just find that browsing's a lot more fun and easier under it than IE. Yes, the whole spyware issue concerns me, but I'd rather have Opera with targeted ads than IE with untargeted popups (okay to be fair, popups aren't an issue with IE, but rather specific sites, but IE doesn't have the smart popup blocking that Opera has). More than anything, I don't think I'd be able to go back to non-tabbed browsing, especially now that I've figured out the CTRL+TAB hotkey to switch between windows. Truth be told however, I still have to use IE for some sites. Hate doing it every time I do though.

Our minds are what make us so unique...

Yes Aristotle. (sorry, I'm about a week removed from a philosophy course ;)) In case you aren't familiar, in Nicomachean Ethics, one of the things Aristotle sets out to do is identify the characteristic that separates humans from all other creatures, and what he decides is that it is in fact "the mind" or "capacity for reason" (which seemed to be exactly what you were saying in your post)

Anyways, seriously, I agree with the "Pro-humans, pro-Earth, pro-unverse[sic]" statement. Well said. Quite often many seem to have difficulty seeing things through anything other than their own country or region specific point of view, and I would be sympathetic to a view that puts the interests of the human race as a whole before the interests of a specific country. Okay, time for bed.

I wish he had actually researched the topic before he wrote the article. The same author also reviewed Quake 3 and made numerous mistakes, all due to lack of research, but I can't find the review.

Oh my goodness, that's pretty brutal, in the story talking about how Q3 was going to have "a departure from out-and-out killing, with a more developed storyline and some adventure game elements" and how "The influential John Romero of id Software is driving the project". Talk about poor journalism.

News Comments > Enter the Six Matrix CDs
75. Re: 6 Freakin CDs Apr 17, 2003, 15:49 Pedle Zelnip

Well, I think the reason Myst helped usher the CD-ROM era in is because it was a game that appealed to more audiences than just the "hardcore gamer" group (for example, I know a lot of parents who got into Myst). So while I'm sure I'll enjoy both the Matrix game and GTA:VC, I don't think either of these fit the bill as being appealing to all audiences.

Now if the Sims comes out with a "Super FMV enabled high-res texture" version, that spans 8 CD's, that might do it.

One thing to note though in regards to the move to DVD being just like the move from floppy to CD-ROM, one notable difference is that a CD-ROM holds the equivalent of several hundred floppies, whereas a DVD is what, about 6 or 8 CD's? So while the move to CD allowed developers to really do some stuff they couldn't do on floppy, I don't see the move to DVD doing much more than just alleviating an inconvenience for gamers. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the move to DVD, I'm just saying it's not that surprising that the move hasn't already occured.
