Nothing truly compares to always keeping oneself in motion. I sit a lot while working, so in order to compensate for being inactive, I exercise one hour on a Nordic Track Skier and ride a bicycle for about one hour along the beach. Still, it doesn't compare to constant movement. Our excessive use of technology is destroying our health in multiple ways: too much sitting, bad posture, multitasking (,) and eye strain. We need a 'paradigm shift' to make technology adapt to humans not the other way around.

The whole point of the article is that exercising once a day does not compensate for long periods of sitting. However, other studies have suggested that getting up and walking for five minutes every hour can mitigate the risks. So there's that!

Boss battles are almost never fun. I hate just having to sit and grind away. Same reason I never got into raiding in MMOs. It's boring as hell. It's like the dragons in DAI. They're pretty cool, but ultimately it just results in a long drawn out grind of a battle.

You should check out Shadow of the Colossus. The entire game is boss battles! Amazing, epic boss battles!

That game is hard. I didn't look at any help guides and gave up quickly. Thinking about trying again with some help. How the hell would I ever think to do any of that....same with Demon Souls, etc. As I get older I have been groomed to be game stupid. My brain used to be able to figure these things out - now I am dumb cause of cheevos and guides.

SotC is a little tough, but it's not really a hugely long game. I think it took me about 15 hours the first time, without looking up help. But yeah, sometimes I did have to put it down and walk away for a while before I'd think of the trick. The game is rewarding, though. I'd really recommend giving it another try... even if you need to use a guide.

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, too. There's a pretty steep learning curve. You need to be patient, and you need to be willing to make mistakes. But again, I think they're entirely worth playing through, even if you have to follow along with a Let's Play or something.

So it's fine for tens of thousands of children to suffer the weeks and weeks the pain and indignity (and possibly death) of a completely preventable disease, why exactly? Because some rich selfish assholes have fake beliefs about science and think other people's children should risk takers to keep their own safe? Douchecanoe.

God your pathetic. You fell for the divide and conquer bait. This has nothing to do with rich people. It has everything to do with educated people who look at history and make their decision to have their children vaccinated or not based upon history and common sense.

I noticed you didn't stand up for any people who are already dead or brain damaged from a vaccination shot...but you probably justify that with the "theoretical" millions of lives that are saved each year because of vaccines. So, that makes it all good.

Please tell me you did get your swine flu shot, yes?

Look at how common measles was. Go look up how common complications from measles are, and their severity. Go look up how contagious it is. Now go look up how common serious complications are to the MMR vaccine. Crunch the numbers.

Right now, you're relatively safe. You're freeloading off of the rest of the country's immunity. But as soon as you get a community of anti-vaxxers together, the viruses start proliferating again, like in this case. Get your ideas to spread, and enjoy infant mortality rates returning to the 19th century standard.

I could see a 30 day jail sentence as reasonable but five years? Waaaay over the top and not beneficial to anyone.

30 days? A huge waste of manpower and a totally not insignificant chance that the SWAT team shoots someone in the raided place. Throw him away for life. He's 33 years old, it's not like a little kid did it.

Yeah. Of all of the dumbness of Avatar, this was the least dumb thing, but it's what everyone calls him out on. He was literally just using a (slightly jargony) word that people weren't familiar with.

/Thread jack -

So I mentioned last week that I saved some data from my old man's laptop. Well, it has hardware failures that probably made it do what it did - so I ordered him a new laptop.

Came with Windows 8.........hmmm...he doesn't even have a MSFT account.....proooooooobbbbably going to format and install Win7....

Thoughts?

Win8.1, with the big Update that further de-stupided the UI, combined with Classic Shell, is pretty usable. There are still some pretty dumb decisions, but really it's not bad. Filesystem performance is way better than Vista or Win7, and personally I'm glad Aero is dead.

Edit: Which is to say--I actually like Win8.1 Pro better than Win7 Ultimate, once I had it tweaked the way I liked. And I never had to create a Microsoft account for it. I guess you do if you want to install apps, but you can't use the apps at all on Win7, so.

...I just found the writing to be very poor...

You make it sound as though unobtainium wasn't a product of literary genius. The visuals were good, but the writing had the depth of a desert puddle.

Plus, I'm pretty sure The Core used the term unobtainium long before James Cameron ever got hard thinking about a skinny blue chick fucking a skinny doofish blue guy.

Unobtainium dates back to the 50s or earlier. It's popularly used in a lot of fields in the sense of "If we had a support/tether/heatsink/blah/blah/blah made of unobtainum, then we could do X."

Also, holy hell, there were girls at Notch's party! 90 ultra-nerds and a bunch of girls? I suspect an LA escort agency made some good bling that night.

In any case, I think it looks pretty sweet. Love his cars. RR Wraith, Ferrari 458 Speciale and I gigglefarted at the room with the 3 huge screens, bar, and pictures of Sean Connery and whatsherface from Dr No.

They look like pretty normal (mostly) young people.

MP3s need VBR. Constant bitrates like 256k are inferior to Lame -v 0. Or waste space and go for 320 k cbr - but it won't sound better than -v 0. For most people and technical equipment -v 2 should do. And use LAME, because there are huge quality issues with lots of other encoders.

I wish more places would just sell flac. We're swimming in storage space and bandwidth, stop cheaping out!

I don't have a *ton* of Blu-Rays, but it is the best way to watch anything that I really want to see. And this is going to offer 2160p at 60Hz? Hell yeah, sign me up. If the price is right. With the 'quantum dot' 4k TVs coming out this year at price points allegedly not much above traditional LED-backlit LCD, I'll probably be making the jump in not too long.

Considering that the movie was released for free on the internet Id say that's raking it in.

Considering that most online distributors are taking a higher percentage than theaters would, the movie made less online than it was expected to in theaters, and the movie still had a full marketing budget, no, it's still deep in the red.

Sony's internal emails showed that they knew they had a huge turdburger on their hands. I'm sure they're pretty pleased with $36M, when they were probably facing a $10M opening weekend otherwise.

Funny you mention her mag! When I first heard they were doing a GiTS real time movie I thought of the chicken from Pacific Rim. You know it's a bad choice when my wife goes "I have bad news for you..." and then shows me an article announcing it.

I'll watch it just like I watched Enders Game (that still hurts) but just like that I'll wait until the bargain bin unless the reviews are stellar. I really do fail to understand the casting choices and need to screw with the original story with movies. Sure you have to fit the medium... but they go right out and fuck with stuff. It blows my mind everytime.

I've seen a lot of other people bringing her up since I mentioned it, too. Great minds, and all that!

Bit puzzled why Levine would have an issue with a spiritual successor to system shock, as he plain stated that that's what Bioshock was.

New Freedom Force... eh. I enjoyed them well enough, but am not really clamoring for another one. A new System Shock, however, holy shit. I'd kickstart that for 200 bucks.

I think Bioshock Infinite was pretty good evidence that he just doesn't actually want to make games like System Shock anymore. He just wants to make interactive webisodes or whatever.

Oh great, they're going to butcher GiTS.

I know. Someone like Kate Beckinsale would be far better for it. Scarjo? No. Just no.

I think someone like Rinko Kikuchi would be a good pick. Actually Japanese, has a bit of the look, and looks okay doing action (some of that is stunt double, but less than you might expect). Beckinsale would probably be a step up from Johansson though, yeah. Better action movie chops.

Update: So Nvidia’s Senior PR, Bryan Del Rizzo contacted me and stated the following: “Untrue. Solely focused on delivering the best gaming experience with G-SYNC—which is shipping today from leading monitor OEMs.”. Looks like Nvidia doesn’t support the optional Adaptive Sync after all.

Ha, missed that. Still, it was allegedly said privately, to people under NDAs. Of course nvidia would refute it publicly when trying to sell their own thing. AMD's solution is cheaper, VESA added it as a part of DisplayPort, and I'd guess it pretty likely that Intel will support it.

nvidia'll be forced into supporting it within 18 months. $20 on it!
