What would happen if Steam was to go out of business? Did you buy the game or rent it? Yeah they've said they would unlock the DRM on the games, but talk is cheap. Every game on steam is owned unless its F2P -- It's a digital purchase, not a digital rental. Read the Steam service agreement. Steam can revoke your ability to play or access any game whenever they want for any reason. Steam is an Indefinite Rental service.
Even when you buy a game on a physical disc, you only purchased a license to play the game. That's all you are allowed to do with it, and they can revoke it whenever they like. It's just hard to break into folks' houses to confiscate their discs. Hurray! |

So EA's strutting around in a miniskirt, fishnets, stilettos? |

I prefer to play with people I know, and usually we get a small group together (2-3 people) and play vs bots. Was hoping to do that with this, but we'd have to play with 3-4 strangers to do it.
I guess it's nice that Valve is putting out new free content, but forcing group play isn't something I appreciate. Even in L4D(2), you can play with bots. I was able to play a game just fine with only myself. I got my ass kicked, but the game didn't complain at all. Filling the rest of the slots with bots might've helped me. |

Then it occurred to me that Windows 8/ XBOX your PC is just around the corner and I could be wasting my time & money.
I wonder how HW manufacturers like MS now?
The hardware cycle continues irrespective of Win8. It's not going to make current hardware obsolete. And it's going to be terrible anyway.
The new XBOX isn't going to happen for at least a year, or else the hype machine would have already begun. You're safe, man. |

SXO wrote on Aug 14, 2012, 16:19: So its the consumers' fault that developers that work for mega-publishers like EA have absolutely no idea how to control their spending? Why is it that CD Projekt can produce The Witcher and The Witcher 2, give away all the "DLC" for free, sell "only" 4 million copies combined (both games and across all platforms), and they're still profitable? Does The Witcher 2 look like a low-budget game to you? How about you stop and question why EA's budgets are so astronomical, and whether these incredible games really cost as much as they're claiming they do to make? It's all horsesh*t, the companies have just become bloated insatiably gluttonous monsters.
Another example is the original Crysis which cost $22 million to make according to CryTek, and they were still profitable after the first year. The truth is when your competitor is making $100 million in the same time frame, your shareholders start to cry foul. So what happens? Time to start squeezing every last drop of money from your customers so your earnings reports start to look sweeter. US corporation has more overhead than a smaller Polish group, news at 11. Of course EA spends more money, on employees if nothing else.
None of that is relevant though. What is relevant is consumers have ALL the power. If people told EA to stick their DLC up their ass then EA would pretty much do so. Instead we say "more please" and EA is obliging.
Capitalism 101. If Capitalism 101 contained even an inkling of truth to it, the higher efficiency of the Polish group (and similar) would mean that monsters like EA would shortly go out of business. |

Or does that count as being the creator? Of course it counts. But if we are being truly fair, we need to recognize that it was built on a Valve platform, which gives them significant measures of contribution, and frankly wasn't perfected until Valve took over its development. Disagree, was better before Valve. That said, when you buy the company that invented it and incorporate the people that invented it you invented it. Noooo. That's like saying, "EA created Ultima, Wing Commander, and Command & Conquer. nVidia created the voodoo2. Google created Youtube." |

God I hate it when people do that to me. That's not what he said. You understand what he meant, don't be an ass. His analogy was bad and he should feel bad. I saw a lot of people taking this viewpoint particularly related to the Dark Souls port that's coming out soon. It is not going to be a good port. Locked at 720p and 30fps.
But From Software has been very up front about the reasons. They didn't know what they were getting into when they planned out the game, and they presumably didn't have the money to take extra time to bring in more coders and do it right.
I'm torn. From hasn't done a PC port before, and if this one doesn't sell they'll never do it again. Their games are great though, and I've love to see the PC become a major platform for them. On the other hand, it's impossible to excuse forcing low resolution and frame rates, not to mention whatever other things turn out to be wrong with the port. |

When I come across that construct elsewhere I always find it a bit distracting and that shouldn't happen in things you write.
I also insist on saying "id is" (as in id software) rather than "id are" (or any corporation for that matter). I find that pretentious and distracting too. Plus I note even John Carmack says "id is." The latter is just a difference between (typical) British English and (typical) American English usage. For American usage, a company is a singular entity. For British usage, a company is a collection of individuals.
