This is probably the Wheel of Time game that they were rumored to be working on a while back.

Oh, yeah. That would make sense.

But kind of a confusing property to be doing stuff with now. I know the last book is coming out, but does anyone really care anymore? Song of Ice and Fire is at least currently topical, and those didn't get sent anywhere even close to Obsidian's ability.

Can you honestly tell me what it is that makes Valve so great?

Sure, they have made some great games in the past. They may even make 1 or 2 in the future.

Now beyond that, they have become a publisher, and as such, are seemingly not immune to the temptations of that role.

I am merely trying to predict the future here....

Soon they will roll out their app store(which no one asked for), as well as all this other gimmicky crap referenced in this article.

All I want is a decent online game store. I can get all that other crap from elsewhere, I don't need it from Valve.

edit: "special." That's right. Don't forget it.

Portal 2 was released just last year. L4D2 wasn't too long ago. Alien Swarm was released for free a couple of years ago. TF2 receives constant updates. Portal 2 received a substantial upgrade earlier this year. The new CS just came out.

They release major games and updates to their games way more frequently than any other major devs that I can think of. They haven't released an HL game in a while, but who cares? It's the most boring series they work on. Ep 1 and Ep 2 were just awful.

How about that Broncos/Steelers game! Damn close 'til those last 2 minutes.

Lol! Funny as hell but absolutely true. At the bar wit a few Steelers fans. I say Ben is going to throw a pick - it's what happens in the last 2 minutes with him under pressure. First play...nothing. Second down...I say, 'Here comes the pick.'. Denver grabs it and wins the game. They're all giving me the hairy eyeball at first and then relax into laughter. 'What are you psychic?' Me...'Well I haven't won the lottery so no. Just going on Big Ben's past performances.'

Still the officiating has been pretty brutal around the league today. Just goes to show how much people get pissed off with the "pros" it shows there is a very distinct difference. Hope the Seahawks enjoyed their 4th timeout. Regardless it was a surprising day all around. Should make for an interesting season.

I only saw the second half, but Ben played a Hell of a game from then until the pick. And Manning played like Manning. It was a fun game.

The officiating was weird, but I don't think it favored either team too strongly in the end. It was just generally clumsy.

The only other game I saw was Browns/Eagles, which was fucking hilarious. I don't think I've ever seen two teams play worse football. Couldn't have asked for two more different games.

I'm completely fine with the $100 fee, and good for them to donate it Child's Play.

I was surprised by an op-ed I read earlier ("The $100 fee for Steam Greenlight submissions is exclusionary, and wrong"). I enjoy Ben's reviews (moreso when he was with Ars), but I can't agree with him here.

Sure, maybe the fee might still serve its purpose if it was slightly lower (personally I think the $10 number thrown around is too low), but $100 isn't too high. I certainly wouldn't call it 'exclusionary' or 'wrong'. Like I've seen some others say, isn't $100 just a tiny Kickstarter away?

Haha. I guessed that this was from the Penny Arcade Report before clicking. Everything I've seen there has seemed very wrong-headed.

ROFL - that's about the last place to go. Wonder if they'll try to pass off their vintage inventory as 'new', just like they sell used games as 'new'.

They'll all be $5 under original retail price. $55 for Mario 3! WOOOOOO!

Coffee, black or with a little cream, is extremely tasty. But I only do a cup every week or two. I don't, in general, use caffeine, so it's a little too potent for me to make it a Thing.

I think they listed D3 as an example because it sold like 6 million units in a week and is the fastest selling PC game of all time.

They already announced that the next Sim City would be always-online.

I would love for AMD to take the performance crown from Intel like they did early 2000's with the Athlon. It would be great for a consumer standpoint for Intel to have real competition.

That said I don't know if I could trust AMD claims after all the hype around the Bulldozer and the APU which both sort of flop and plagued with issues.

They're looking for a 15% improvement over Piledriver, which is supposed to be a 10-15% improvement over Bulldozer. That doesn't really put them competitive with Intel. It might keep them from getting completely crushed, though.

The Trinity APUs (with Piledriver cores, I think?) are supposed to be pretty good for mobile, though.

I was amazed Last stand rated so bad, while X-Men Origins: Wolverine was 30...I remember laughing out loud, in a bad way, during one of the more unbelievable parts of Wolverine...

And speaking of shitty Jackman movies, I don't see redacted on this list, so it's clearly incorrect...

Mankind as a whole decided to erase all knowledge of the aformentioned Hugh Jackman movie that cannot be named. You must have missed the meeting.

The Fountain was infinitely more shitty than Van Helsing. Mankind should probably go and have another meeting...

Creston

The Fountain had pretty visuals.

I still have no idea what happened in it, though.

Also, Katrina was already a Cat 5 hurricane when it was about to hit land, and it was one of the most powerful C5s ever witnessed. Isaac is a Tropical Storm that may turn into a Cat 1. Quite different scales of destruction there.

Creston

It hit land as a cat 3, though. Still a big difference from a cat 1, but.

Haven't tried the demo, but the platforming looks pretty tight just from the kickstarter video. The physics don't look all wonky like most modern platformers.

A blueray disk doesnt hold enough data to be able to push an hour n half movie at 4k, not even close. Rumor fail.

A 25GB Blu-Ray can hold 3-4 hours of MPEG4 1080p (~2.1 megapixels) content. The Blu-Ray spec allows for 100GB discs. "4K" covers a whole bunch of resolutions which fall between 7 and 12 megapixels. 3840x2160 (double the vertical and horizontal resolution of 1080p) seems most likely, so ~8.3 megapixels.

100GB seems like it'd be plenty for a movie at 4K. I don't think current Blu-Ray uses state-of-the-art encoding, either.

The reason nothing has matched MOO2 is simple: designers honestly felt the best way to improve the genre is add real-time elements.

Hello? The Galactic Civilization series? They are the equal of the MOO series, and arguably better in many respects.

GC, while pretty awesome, is pretty lacking combat-wise compared to MOO2. MOO2's player-base-initiative turn-based combat had issues too (making it far too easy, for instance), but still.

I would be curious to know how strong the sender signal had to be and what bandwidth it had. I am always shocked how little REAL technical information these pseudo science articles have. Even though it'd be extremely interesting to read how exactly it was done. In the end, I am not sure why they don't shot a com satellite into mars orbit first.... surely I am not the first to think that? Wouldn't that make communication far easier? And wouldn't that be mandatory for communication of huge data volumes (ie, light based burst communication?). Or are they seriously sending this data over a long band radio frequency?

While Curiosity can phone home directly, Mars Odyssey is also used for communications.

I think this vid explains why they don't rely on that kinda thing, though, indirectly. Lots more possible points of failure.

Don't use the matchmaker. Just look for MvM games in the normal server browser. Much better experience, though still not particularly great.

Some pretty astute guesses, and some terribly off base. Most of them either far too pessimistic or far too optimistic. Even the writer of the article:

The age is indeed dark — darker than anybody in 1987 could have possibly foreseen.

What? Come on. Get some perspective.
