Meh, so it's basically WoW & GW2 rolled into one. I already hate the stylized look of the characters. Simplified console style combat, etc. bleh. Oh well, so much for my excitement for this.

How do you get simpler than present MMO combat?

Press button. Wait for cooldown. Press button. Wait for cooldown. Press button.

I seriously wonder (ignoring that they're currently owned by a publisher) if they put up a kickstarter for 1.5 - 2 million, if people would bite (as well as what kind of game we'd get for that amount).

I know I'd toss $100 at the screen.

Yeah. It'd be an insta-back for me, if it looked like it was being created by someone that looked like they could do it. Volition definitely counts.

Unfortunately, since the Interplay assholes, of all people, just bought the rights to Freespace for seven thousand dollars, it's pretty obvious that Volition isn't interested.

Woot, frame latency fixed in CF.

...did they ever fix it in single cards? They said they had a fix, but I don't remember if drivers ever came out for it? They did game-specific fixes back toward the beginning of the year, but that's the last I'd heard of it.

Played the demo. Just horrible. Graphics are alright -- with some proper detail for a change, unlike Darksiders! -- but the rest is horrible.

His weapon makes no fucking sense: a crusefix the size of his lower arm, yet it releases a chain spike so long that could lodge onto the fucking moon. Other than that this game is simply too much a console game. I don't fault the game for it, of course, because it IS, but it's just a reminder that I really don't like that stuff. You see the target group of the devs all over it: 12-15 year old boys who want to play pretend being the castlevania protagonist on the playground -- the way the guy walks tough, etc. And then those fucking cutscenes during and after almost Every. Fucking. Kill! So horrid. Gotta desuade my wife into buying a PS3 ater this reminder.

There really are some great games on the PS3. Don't let crap like this scare you away.

Shit, I was on broadband in 2002 I think. Don't quote me on that, that's a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure. Basically whenever it got rolled out in Cincinnati I jumped right on it, with those goofy DSL modems and the phone line splitters that only sort of worked.

DSL started rolling out ~2000 in Cincy, IIRC.
(Sorry for quoting you)

DRM aside, Lords of Shadow is, in my opinion, an excellent game. I highly recommend it.

I did a review of it, too.

Anyhow, great game if you like the God of War style. Atmosphere and soundtrack are awesome.

I don't have a review to point to--but I really didn't like this game at all, and I rather liked what I played of GoW (minus the QTEs). As far as I got in LoS, the entire game consisted of: Get locked into tiny arena with an uncontrollable camera that only points in one direction. Fight a bunch of guys that take a million hits to kill. ... Fight the same bunch of guys that take a million hits to kill. ... Fight the same bunch of guys that take a million hits to kill. ... Get shunted off to the next tiny arena to fight a bunch of guys, potentially with a minigame interlude.

Overrated. The original RoT only got some attention because of its excessive violence and brutality. Other than this shock & awe factor the game didn't really stand out in any way. It was a fairly average/mediocre corridor shooter in terms of game-/gunplay, level design, "story" (LOL), graphics and sound.

It was a pioneer in terms of multiplayer. 11 player deathmatch, TONS of different multiplayer modes, bizarre and amusing weapons.

Yeeeeah, kinda skeptical of this article. Pretty sure the TSA wouldn't come out and say, "Oooh, no, we can't detect these things at *all*," if it were actually true.

Kids Who Grow Up Using iPads Have Restricted Vocabularies. You think?

Been saying this for years, but vocabulary is not the real problem. The real problem is many have severely deficient interpersonal skills.

I know a few Blues peeps who would very likely fall in that category. :O

Argh, that whole article was so ridiculous I can't even formulate a coherent response. So let me just throw out there:

BOOKS. Fucking BOOKS. Do they say the same thing about BOOKS, where you only see words, vs. the TV where they *hear* them? No. The OPPOSITE argument is made. Just because it's new technology does not mean it's evil.

Christ. If you have a personal store of esoteric vocabulary, where did you pick it up? From people speaking, or from reading?

XKCD's mouse over text sums up Fight Club pretty well IMHO. I was blown away by the slick style and vaguely Anonymous style anarchy. Now, it seems rather silly and has plot holes large enough to host underground boxing matches in.

I haven't seen it recently, 2 questions about the ending (spoilers):
1. Didn't Jack and Marla die? They're in the building which I assume Jack and Tyler just fought in and it appeared that Tyler kept the bomb going. I thought they went up with everything else.

2. How does Tyler die? Jack shoots himself, but how does that kill Tyler? Surely for Tyler to die, Jack would have to honestly believe that he's shooting Tyler to death. Why would blowing off half his head make Tyler die? That would only work if Jack believes that Tyler lived in that bit of his head, which doesn't make sense. If Jack could beat Tyler with willpower, he wouldn't have needed the gun at all.

3. Not to do with the ending, but how the fuck did the fights, the first one or two in particular, work? Didn't the first recruit get a bit freaked out when he fought Tyler and then fought Jack, without Tyler/Jack acknowledging that it's the same person? Wouldn't the first and second recruits have a quick chat and realise that this guy's a whacko?

It was great when I was a teenager...

It's a sequel to the book. The book is quite different from the movie.

If they make a new Total Annihilation (which is still the second best RTS ever after Sacrifice, which also curiously never had a sequel) please stay away from the modern tendency towards hero units.

While the commander is just such a thing, in modern games they are used as squad leaders with artificially restricted total numbers of units. TA battles are glorious ones of up to 200 at a time and the commander usually stays well back.

Well, TA did have veteran units (which counted kills), which I think became slightly more accurate. Such a great idea that I haven't seen implemented well since (CoH has vets, but there was nothing like having Big Bertha with 200 kills to its name.)

Usually the commander stays back... Usually. Don't forget about the dreaded Commander Transport rush on game settings where you had to destroy all units, not just the commander. The Commander's blew up nuclear style, so a well timed dropping of your commander in their base 2-3 minutes into the skirmish would totally destroy it.

So many fond memories of Cavedog, weekly new units, Mplayer and Kaili... Planetary Annihilation will probably be great, but I want some Arm vs Core action!

Veteran status was way more awesome (and ridiculous) in TA than in Supreme Commander. Since the units aimed faster and fired with more accuracy, and all units could fire at all other units, you could have veteran kbots that could shoot down planes.

I was playing a match against someone once that kept throwing hundreds and hundreds of T1 units against my (largely) T2 forces. I had a guardian(?), the T1 artillery piece for ARM, with so many kills that it could swivel and fire fast enough to shoot the fastest aircraft right out of the sky.

While they have done games that could be described as 'bad' in many different ways, they have also done some pretty good games. Rather than writing them off, I would urge people to be critically analytical =)

For the record, I most definitely do not like Randy Pitchford.

Kind of a big pile of dull. And I guess people really like Borderlands, but it's not my kind of thing.

Funny to see Samba de Amigo in that list, though.

We're a republic, not a democracy in the first place. And no. Mr transparent has been everything but so far.

Democracy has more meanings than "direct democracy." A democratic republic is a type of representative democracy.

Which is more likely, he says that smartphones will become hardcore platforms because he writes games for them, or he writes games for them because he believes this is the future? I think the later, or rather both.

That doesn't mean he's right. His central claim is that platforms like the PC have gone from casual to hardcore and his evidence for this is incredibly selective.

I don't think he understands the word hardcore, or the history of PC gaming, or anything.
