For what it's worth, the first Metro is one of my favorite games in the past few years. The first hour is kind of crappy, and the shooting mechanics suck until you get a decent gun, but I really dug it by the end. I don't recall any QTEs...

Hmmm, I have it on Steam. Maybe I'll give it another shot then. No QTEs? I may be confusing it with something else, but I do remember the action, at least in the beginning, was pretty sparse, and I lost interest pretty quickly.

No promises. I played it kind of a while ago, but I remember enjoying it quite a bit (in that I actually got around to finishing it). It is most definitely heavily scripted and linear like most modern shooters, but it at least offered something different in atmosphere.

I'm sure you'll provide examples of how classic single player FPS games from ten years ago are superior to the likes of Bioshock Infinite, FC3: Blood Dragon, Metro: Last Light, or Dishonored. You can't really, with the possible exception of the original Half Life and maybe Duke Nukem 3D. The modern ones are simply superior, both in gameplay and presentation. So why are you laughing?

Mag's list is a damn good start. I'd add Aliens vs. Predator, the Serious Sams, Unreal, the Unreal Tournaments, Far Cry (almost 10 years old), Descent, Descent II, Quake, Quake II, Quake III, Rainbow Six, Doom, Doom II, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force, Call of Duty, Operation Flashpoint, Rise of the Triad, Undying, etc, etc, etc...

I'll give you modern games are superior in graphics, but graphics don't make a better game. Personally, I really don't give a rat's ass about graphics. Gameplay is everything, and there simply aren't many PC games today that stack up to the gameplay and FUN of the older games. Multi-platform development has resulted in new FPSs that are nothing but heaps of consolized shit. Bioshock was fun, but Bioshock Infinite was made for the console kiddies. Extremely boring. The first Metro bored the shit out of me. Horrible shooter with what seemed like 5 minutes of QTEs and walking around looking for ammo for every 30 seconds of restricted corridor shooter gameplay. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance, but if it didn't interest me in an hour... not my fault. Modern FPSs are developed for consoles first, and that has had a pretty negative effect on the gameplay. You want to spend $60 so you can ooh and aah over pretty graphics, go ahead. I'll reinstall Doom II again and actually have some fun.

For what it's worth, the first Metro is one of my favorite games in the past few years. The first hour is kind of crappy, and the shooting mechanics suck until you get a decent gun, but I really dug it by the end. I don't recall any QTEs...

For instance modern FPS have better (overall) single player minus aspects of gameplay than almost any classic game (because of modern hollywood techniques and improved aesthetics and lessons learned over 20 years of making shooters).

Ten+ years ago gives us access to NOLF 1/2, System Shock 2, Deus Ex, DE: IW (which is better than many modern shooters and was regarded as shit at the time), Thief 1/2, Jedi Knight 1/2, Max Payne, SHOGO, Heretic 1/2, Hexen 1/2, Half-Life...

What Aseven said is correct. The Castlestory devs have been barely updating it since the kickstarter finished, giving more lip-service than any development.

Shouldn't be on steam is my opinion.

Yes. Aside from being completely wrong, ASeven was correct.

Anyone playing Castle Story? Impressions? I came close to backing it on KS, but wasn't sure how it would turn out.

Also, I think 7 is supposed to be Planetary Annihilation? I'd be curious about impressions for it as well.

According to the Kickstarter page and Steam Forums, Castle Story is smelling like a scam, with the devs having only recently releasing patches after a year of silence. Game was supposed to come out a year and a half ago and it seems the game is very lacking in promised features as well.

While they are definitely behind schedule, ASeven is hugely exaggerating. The kickstarter only ended a year ago. They were supposed to release a prototype last October and a beta shortly after. The prototype was released at the end of the year and they gave beta users access to it about six months ago. There has been a huge amount of work done on it in those six months, from what I can tell.

Edit: And Planetary Annihilation is making impressive progress. I haven't had time to really sit down with it, but there are plenty of videos of people playing the alpha on youtube. I can report impressions when I've gotten to put a few hours into the beta.

I'll be honest and say that the main reason I didn't back this is because the graphics style threw me off.

I didn't back it because the amount of money you need to make a good rts is way more then 3 million. The original supcom had 10 mill, supcom 2 had 5 million.

3 million just isn't enough. I hope the mod community can make some cool mods for PA since the developer just doesn't have the resources/talent to do a full fledged next gen RTS.

PA is juts a retread of the same damn game we've all been playing for years already sadly.

They are reducing costs with the lack of a SP campaign and by having the planets be largely procedurally generated. The factions also have symmetric units, which means no unit balancing troubles. And they already had some tech put together. And they're using a relatively simplified graphical style.

All that together, and you can do it on the cheap.

Heh, AMD's mantle is gonna be interesting, assuming it's 100% hardware agnostic... but what interests me more is what AMD plans to do with it's failed CPU line up... are they really gonna continue the Bulldog architecture?

I believe they're playing the long game with the new architecture. From their recent roadmaps it sounds like the standalone CPU-only Bulldozer-derived cores are coming to their end, with a continued focus on the APU side (Bulldozer-derived cores + GPU on a chip).

The integration between the CPU and GPU should be tightening more and more over the next couple of generations, and it seems quite likely that they want programming languages/compilers to advance to the point where you don't need to take (too m)any special considerations to make use of the GPU part. When that happens, the shit-tastic Bulldozer FPU can go away.

Risky gamble.

So there it is, Cutter. Now you can go buy whatever you want, since the new cards are apparently just rebadges of old cards, at a higher price, and maybe with slightly-improved clockspeeds. And with the new audio API.

My issues with the PS3 controller was 2 fold. 1) Size, it's just not made for big hands. 2)Location of the sticks, and pressure triggers. Microsoft nailed the controller layout, and while the PS4 controller is wider, but the sticks are barely moved at all in the gif. Haven't had my hands cramp up so much playing Infamous 1 and 2, then I have since the NES days.

I feel the exact opposite about the controllers. I can play the PS3 for quite a while with no trouble--but playing with a 360 controller actually gave me tendonitis in my thumb. I have large (as in palm-to-fingertip length, and the like) but not fat (width of fingers) hands.

Nothing's been as awesome as the GameCube/Wavebird controllers, though. Can't believe they didn't resurrect the layout for the Wii/Wii U classic controllers.

Cutter hold off on that. Go for the 7950 cards as they are only slightly more expensive and are well worth the entry price. I have also heard good things about the Nvidia 760 series.
Between the two, the 760 and 7950 there isn't a huge difference, though the 7950 will actually beat the 760 in most cases there's only a 5% difference w/the radeon winning on texel rates(AF). The prices are identical as well(or depending on rebates/sales), and the 7950 is more power hungry, but with the dual fan cooling solution on the sapphire job I've got I don't even hear it running really, even with the fan at 50%. And my PC is on my desk about 2ft away.

There's a review here though as it says in the article, it comes down to what you want and the features on the card. If you have a mobo w an extra PCI-E slot, slap a cheap ass nvidia card in just for physx--I'm currently using a 520 silent made by Asus until my 560ti comes back from evga. And these are the theoretical comparisons. Anyway Cutter, enjoy whichever you pick out. Chris at CC London and I picked away at it for a good 30mins on a slow day and ran a bunch of benches, couldn't really find much difference either. But I did get damned as tired of the shoddy nvidia drives that have been coming out for the last 6mo, and AMD's seem to be above the bar for a change, at least compared to when I owned my last card which would have been about 5 years ago.

Do that many games support hardware physx? I was thinking of doing something like that a few years ago, but it seemed like only a few games came out that would've actually taken advantage so I never bothered.

Hope you didn't go too small on your SSD, so many people only think of it as necessary for a boot drive but having extra space for games and not needing to shuffle them back and forth to a mechanical is worth the extra expense. I wouldn't go smaller than 250 - which has a formatted capacity of 233. 60 gig partition for OS and main programs and the rest for games and data, that way you can image your OS partition using (Active@, Acronis, AOMEI) to a mechanical for easy restore.

I didn't see any deep discounts on last gen hardware, the heat issue is just for people trying to do extreme overclocks which I think people are spoiled with anyway. 3.5 to 4.2 ghz, safe and effortless yet people cry when they can't get to 5 ghz? I also took into account the improvements in UEFI bios designs, more SATA 6 ports and USB 3.0 ports and see there's plenty of reasons to pass over last gen as an upgrade platform.

Too bad you were under pressure to get your parts so suddenly, deal hunting seems to be part of the challenge in putting together a new system these days. You can't just take price into account but when you come across a good deal on a thoroughly researched part it's like sweet, sweet victory.

Curses to Microcenter and their stupid cheap prices on motherboards and cpu combo's, they must have some sort of agreement not to sell at those prices online or risk being dropped from distributors. $279 for a 4770k, really?

<3 Microcenter. It's been everything I could do over the past year to avoid going over to grab a CPU+mobo.

I probably wouldn't build a machine without one these days, but the SSD-for-boot-drive hype is overblown. Maybe I just don't reboot my PC often enough, but I didn't really notice a lick of difference when I switched.

On the other hand, doing heavy data analysis on an SSD is quite a bit nicer.

September 25th seems to be the day that they'll announce things. I'm really not sure what, if any, effect it'll have. Lately, AMD and nvidia have just been shoehorning new products higher on the price scale rather than replacing old products at their current price points, as they used to do.

But, since the announcement is so soon it seems worth waiting just to see what the news is and then try to guess the effect.

I like Sapphire a lot - my last 2 cards - but I'm thinking the ASUS card is better - and it's 10 bux cheaper to boot.

Wait a week for AMD to announce their new cards, then decide whether it's worth the wait for the new cards/a price drop.
