News Comments > BioShock 2 DRM and GFWL Info
51. Re: BioShock 2 DRM and GFWL Info Jan 20, 2010, 17:01 DG

I rented the first on 360 and thoroughly enjoyed it, considered buying but decided while the game was worth the money, there was not enough repayability to justify the purchase when I'd already completed it.

I was just going to buy this one, on PC. But now I'll maybe rent for the 360 again, if I get around to it.

-1 sale chalked up to GfWL & DRM

with-audio version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMQl5pKF-gI

I'm going to guess the issue is an audio format unsupported by yt, quality is a lot worse in the above link, maybe they redid the file before uploading

I don't think the TV exec's realise how much they are shooting themselves in the foot. I'm very reluctant to start watching a TV series now because I know chances are if I like it, it'll be cancelled - and likely at a bad point with no conclusion.

p.s., I wish they'd quit talking about the follow up when the next one isn't done yet. The more we start looking forward to the follow up the less we're looking forward to this one.

I just came to the conclusion that DLCs don't work for me: I can't be arsed to buy, download and then start up a game again after it's been rotting on my harddisk for months just to play through 2 hours of new content of a game you're no longer emotionally/mentally/passionately attached to anyway. It's just too much of a fuzz.

Give me a DLC in the form of a big, bad-ass expansion worth at least 20 dollars every half a year instead of all that small and meaningless 5 dollar crap. Am I the only one with this opinion, I wonder?
+1
.. Unless the DLC arrives during or shortly after I've finished with a game, when I'm still "into" it. Can be an advantage of picking up games in the sale (very fast DLC tends to be annoying, leaving me wondering if they just cut something out of the original game).

Er, Cracked should be more careful on this kind of topic. Check their source links for CPR and defib and it's immediately clear they are misapplying statistics that were already highly questionable.

Applying artistic licence is all well and good with their pop trivia stuff, which is usually a very entertaining read, but they should take utmost care when writing something that may influence how someone approaches an attempt to save a life.

News Comments > Rockstar San Diego Revolt
29. Re: Rockstar San Diego Revolt Jan 9, 2010, 11:03 DG

I've chatted with two people (one a QA temp and another an employee in game design) working at Rockstar North, separate people on separate occasions. This was during GTA IV crunch time.

Both were putting a LOT of hours in. Lots - 12hr a day 6 days a week I believe. This suited the temp's situation; the employee was clearly overworked but fully accepted that this is the industry, and mentioned that he was getting a long holiday (I think it was 4 weeks, on top of regular holiday) as part of a bonus when they gold. Something like that anyway, this was over a year ago and both conversations were in pubs).

Both seemed satisfied with the pay. The QA said his hourly pay which I forget but at the time I thought very good for temp position that doesn't require qualifications - not a lot of money but well above the minimum wage which they certainly could have gotten away with. The employee was clearly happy with his pay, and said that although it was hard work he enjoyed working there. The temp wasn't expecting to be taken on afterwards, but was going to apply anyway.

While this is a year ago, and not San Diego, this letter really doesn't fit with my conversations.

News Comments > Blizzard Discouraging WoW Account Restorations, Considering Mandatory Authenticators
1. Re: Blizzard Discouraging WoW Account Restorations, Considering Mandatory Authenticators Jan 8, 2010, 14:49 DG

gg Blue for a much more accurate heading than TFA's "Account Administration told not to restore hacked characters".

It can be viewed two ways: WoW are offering an alternative to waiting for restoration, something that costs them money despite "gold sellers and keyloggers" making it sound awfully like it's your own fault.

Personally, while I don't play an MMO, I'm quite sure I'd be wanting the full restoration. Seeing as there's no indication that WoW are deliberately increasing the wait in order to push people onto this alternative, I don't see the problem. Oh noes I haev a choice!!11

Instead of offering players a care package, Blizzard can employ more staff, and as we will discuss in a later post, train those staff in better ways to prevent account compromises and exploitation.

Shouldn't that be train users in better ways to prevent account compromises and exploitation?

character restoration queue that is consistently several days to weeks long

that isn't very consistent. Several days seems quite reasonable for fixing something that is not their fault (several weeks, not so much).

"Hardware sales declined 8% due to recent console price cuts and a decline in unit sales on a year-over-year basis."

Means sales in $ fell due to both each unit having a lower $ price that they did a year ago (so having sold the same number of units would have resulted in less sales $), and also from selling less units (so even if the $ price per unit had been the same they would have made less total sales $).

100 units at $100 each = $10,000
94 units at $98 each = $9,200

No they don't have same rule as pornography. In UK it's simply illegal to create an image of a naked child (unless e.g. medical, not only is there a specific reason for taking an image but also a reason why that child specifically).

But yes the scanner should be very tightly controlled. Some of the things being called for is that images cannot be saved (any possible detection means a full body search anyway, and such search can be conducted without any positive on the scanner, so why bother) and that the scanner operator is isolated from the line (has no idea whom he is scanning). Quite good controls that very probably won't be implemented.

Oh yes and background checks, though they're a weak control.

Single digits F? Been hitting that a few times here in Scotland though I think -12C (10F) is the coldest it's been where I am. Highlands have hit around 0F (-16/17) a couple of times. Fortunately it warmed up quite a bit for the loonies on New Year's http://www.theloonydook.co.uk/

Very unusually cold for here

As host you still carry the burden of processing all the other players info as well as the game world itself. This as well means having to process THEIR lag. How is this an advantage?
Lag comes from latency, insufficient bandwidth and other server resources - particularly CPU. Any disadvantage from hosting requirements is also passed on.

Yes there is a point where you hosting is more laggy for you than if you were on a dedicated server, but you are always going to have less lag relative to the other players.

I thought about it aswell, comments seemed to be broadly positive (although many prefer the supreme commander scale, which maybe accounts for the metacritic user score being much lower than reviews) though it has securom and activation crap so I cant be arsed.

I hate inkjets. They always seem to have problems and spend half their time "cleaning" (using lots of ink to do so) and the other half spewing out messy pages. You can get some surprisingly good photo prints with some but the few photos I want hard copy it's worth getting done properly, which is quite cheap now (probably not much more than ink, photo paper etc).

I bought a cheap Samsung laser, their toner isn't horrific and it uses a popular unit which can be very cheap from 3rd party.

Main sales page shows Civ IV, if you're consider it go a page further and pick up the CIV IV Complete which has the same sale % off (playing with the BtS expansion is the way to play).

On second thoughts, check retail instead - UK's play.com have the complete edition for half Steam's sale price (though it doesn't use CDKeys so can't be activated on Steam AFAIK; however little steam advantage since since patch it doesn't even have cdcheck now).

surprised players need to install an add on to play custom content, in addition to the content itself

The Half Elf wrote on Dec 24, 2009, 08:33:
Ok so where the hell do I download this thing?
says in tfa
PLAYERS: If you are not looking to design but play custom campaigns all you need to do is install the add-on support package. Just go into steam and open up the Tools tab. Look for the entry labeled Left 4 Dead 2 - Add-on Support click and install it.

DESIGNERS: Besides also downloading the above file you will need to download the Left 4 Dead 2 - Authoring Tools <same place>

maybe they hadn't quite hit your steam client if you already looked there before writing your post

1. Re: manuals Dec 23, 2009, 14:11 DG

The Civ series demands an honourable mention for having proper manuals. Sure, it wasn't entertaining like the TF2 announcements but they were well written, accurate and complete, with a good amount of tips yet somehow not spoiling it. I remember buying Civ IV and actually enjoying reading the manual on the train home.

(NB: they tend to include proper manuals on release and then just include a .pdf on the cheap versions, fair enough).

News Comments > TF2 Bots Beta
14. Re: TF2 Bots Beta Dec 22, 2009, 13:19 DG

I don't get how people enjoy the idea of bots in an online game. It creates such a fake/empty experience it defeats the purpose of online play. I suppose running your own local server and inserting bots is alright, but as soon as they enter the online realm I'm out. This is what made UT so fake and generic to me.
Bots are very useful for a bit of training and an introduction to MP - I only started playing MP after eventually getting bored of ReaperBots.

Online, bots can fill up the servers. This is of course often not a good thing, enabling bots isn't a decision any server admin would take lightly. But, for example, on the big 32-player fast-respawn servers I often find if a server gets restarted it doesn't repopulate until the next day - people join, ask why the server is so empty then leave after 5 mins because they want a busy server. Even if bots just extend the wait to 10 mins the server is much more likely to repopulate with real people.

Similarily quite a few people seem to be in the habit of quitting a server when it becomes apparent their team is going to lose. This then spirals because by quitting, the team is even more likely to lose and people more likely to quit. Bots can stem the tide somewhat. IMHO bots should also have a small amount of rubber banding, slightly upping their skillz if their team is getting owned (i.e. encouraging the possibility of breaking out of a spawn rape, an event that results in a lot of quitting).

Bots may also allow being less strict with the team-balancing. Many servers will move a player to the other team (much to the annoyance of that player) if one team is just 2 players less for just a few minutes. With bots filling in the difference is less significant so you can relax the swap to say 3 player difference for a longer period of time.
