I pretty much never start a game and don't finish. I can only think of Crysis where I got to, IIRC, shortly after the tanks section. I think I got a combination of tired of it and other distractions, I don't recall it being crap enough to actually not want to play it.

I almost never swap between games. I'm usually playing one MP game and occasionally taking a break from it from start to finishing a singleplayer game.

I guess I don't buy THAT many games though.

Any reason W7 would be recommended and no Vista? I didn't think there was any features exclusive to W7 and performance delta for games negligible.

Hmm this game coming about the same time as I'm anticipating a cpu/mb and/or SSD upgrade, still have W7 box sitting unopened that I bought on the pre-order dealie too. Works out nicely I'm waiting a week or two after release to get a verdict (which I'm definitely doing after the last BF game I bought).

I'm not even going to try this, but I'm not going to complain either.

They came right out and said it's not a core Civ type of game, like they did for Civ Rev. It's not intended as a new game for Civ fans, it's intended for non-Civ fans: to open a new market and maybe bring some over to core Civ. It's not going to delay Civ VI or whatever by another 3 years or whatever either.

If, like me, you're a Civ fan and this has no appeal, I suggest simply ignore it like all the other FB games, it has no bearing on anything.

Steam page loads up, decide to click through to see the video for SMB, get about 3 paragraphs into a glowing review on Gamespot and suddenly Steam is downloading something and I have my credit card in my hand.

Not sure what happened there.

I'm resisting so far, though Super Meat Boy is tempting. I could do with a game that I can just bash away at for half an hour.

Hrm, I would like to watch this trailer, however Youtube is asking for a login, as demanded by the uploader? Wtf is this bullshit? Do people actually log in to youtube now?

Here's a little tip... YouTube never asks for a login for embedded videos. You can always modify the URL to mimic an embeded video in order to bypass the login crap.

If the original URL looks like this:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXXXXXXX

Then just change it to this:
www.youtube.com/embed/XXXXXXXX

Hope that helps
nice. Now I need to figure out how on earth to program greasemonkey to sort this out for me... Probs a script already somewhere, though those "youtube hd" scripts never seem to work how I want them to.

[...] I recall all the bitching and complaining that STEAM got when it was released and was required to play Valve's games and then others...but now most prefer to have it as an option when buying a new game... [...]
Yeah but initially it was crap but then it came good. Quite quickly. And it kept getting better. Pretty much every way you get (or used to get) fucked over by nearly all download movie, music etc services, Steam never did that but instead thought of something better.

It's still not perfect. For example, offline mode. The ramifications being rather excessive if you screw up entering payment details. There being some 3rd party games on there that could effectively be taken away if the publisher decides. OK so that's not really Valve's fault, but I do tend to just assume game's follow the Steam standard if I'm buying on Steam, and feel like Valve are allowing some publishers to ride on the goodwill of the publishers who have done the right thing and gone with the Steam standard.

But GfWL, what does it offer? I can link my PC gaming to my Xbox account. That's a nice but token thing. And that's it. There is no good reason for it to exist, and it wouldn't but for the MS muscle. MS claims to support PC gaming then lumps in a "service" which has cons but no pros, merely serving to detract from other actual and potential services.

The thing is exactly that they are not trying. It must almost take an effort for them to have ignored Steam's good ideas. When I think of GfWL offices I can only imagine all the staff actually work on something else and have this thing as some unwanted side project lumped on them that they have no interest or time for.

If they're not going to do it properly, they need to get out of the way.

News Comments > EVE Online Player Exodus?
14. Re: EVE Online Player Exodus? Jun 28, 2011, 13:46 DG

Eh $1m is $1m, and it's all off the bottom line as the individual user will have a trivial direct cost. Also that's per year, and furthermore a drop in the active player base, something which has an impact on remaining players. Not forgetting the PR.

While it's questionable all those 5,000 will actually go, there's also the question over how many intend to go but haven't signed up to that spreadsheet.

The death knell, maybe not, but it certainly should be of significant concern.

18. Re: EVE Online Microtransaction Uproar Jun 25, 2011, 06:59 DG

Oh, bummer. Well I guess that doesn't fundamentally change my point. Wealthy people putting in cash to buy PLEX to buy ISK to buy items from players who then sell the ISK for PLEX and then into subscription time are still not having to put their own cash into their subscription. So they still "cash out", it's just the amount is limited by how much subscription they no longer have to buy with their own money.

I think what it changes is constrain the laws of demand and supply and thus increase the risk of inflation from too much ISK being bought with cash?

This is why I'm having a hard time understanding the uproar. People already buy the ingame currency with money. They could then use that currency to buy anything in game. This is just cutting out one step in between and letting them buy items with money.

tl;dr: I think it's like China is exporting goods into the USA while banning any imports from the USA.

I don't play EVE but it's largely an economic game no? Stuff bought in game is bought from other players, ISK can be bought and sold for real money.

If players are putting in the time, risk etc to obtain resources which are transferred (in a however roundabout way) for real cash, well that's all good.

So a wealthy player gets a shortcut, so what? They could have the same item by putting a lot of time into the game, or maybe by schmoozing the right person in the right corporation or whatever. For all the game advantage they get personally, that cash is flowing into the economy and all the other players benefit.

This is not like deathmatch or whatever type games where external advantages are extremely undesirable. Here, it's like wealthier people moving into your neighbourhood, tempting to be jealous sure but the reality is you win because they're spending money in your shops.

Even a substantial amount of wealthy players putting in lots of real money shouldn't really be a problem since the laws of demand and supply are in effect.

Items sold by CCP on the other hand exist by magic. They just appear. And the cash bypasses the economy and goes straight to CCP. Wealthy gamers get their shortcut and nobody else benefits. Actually, everyone else loses because CCP create additional supply so you get deflation (i.e. existing items etc in the game become less valuable).

The cosmetic items, I think the annoyance there is more because it's a sign that the whole thing is just a cash-in with no thought to the game. Handled correctly, selling cosmetic items could have been a method for CCP to allow wealthy people to "donate" to building CCP revenues without CCP raising subscription fees on everyone. Instead it's just a totem for how mishandled the whole thing is.

I would have thought it would make more sense for CCP to make their money by taxing inter-player cash transactions? Come to think of it, I would have thought they should make a net gain on these anyway if they are selling ISK for cash, since presumably the whole thing should be geared so that more ISK is bought for cash than is cashed-out. Even a very small amount of in-game inflation should ensure that CCP always wins, just like a casino.

News Comments > Team Fortress 2 Goes Free-to-Play
63. Re: Team Fortress 2 Goes Free-to-Play Jun 24, 2011, 19:06 DG

Steam is usually fast, even today it started at 2.2MB/s at 6pm UK time, sat there for a while then just fell off a cliff, eventually taking 4 1/2 hours to pull down the 5.5GB.

My ISP isn't one of the cheapo ones, packages are true unlimited and they do not throttle. It probably helps that I live in the centre of the city where more of the broadband lines will be serving offices than homes, so there's no "peak time" congestion at the last mile. I can saturate my connection by downloading Ubuntu or something from MS at any time of day.

Literally the only inconsistent source I use regularly is Steam, and that's almost always fast all the time except when there's a major release.

Which I figure means either Steam's content server stats information isn't reliable or the connection between my ISP and Steam isn't up to it. I'm tempted to assume the former since other people whom I know to have other ISPs are usually complaining at the same time.

I thought there was multiple routes to use a XP-like admin account on W7?

I don't bother though. I found the UAC a nuisance for the first few weeks after install then barely notice it.

38. Re: Team Fortress 2 Über Update Thursday, Free Play This Week Jun 22, 2011, 13:58 DG

Main reason I stopped playing TF2 (aside from time shortage) was the state of public servers. It looks okay if you play fairly high skill as there seems to be a reliable core of servers, but the rest is urgh.

Tons of servers run bots, cheats for subscribers and/or multitudes of other crap. The few reliably populated and honest servers were usually stacked very heavily so it's a choice of either doing or being spawnraped.

A TF2 Locked mode would be nice - no bots and server settings locked down, and also an option for Classic mode which is Locked + original weapons only. No doubt there's some mod that does this, but no doubt there's also some mod that pretends to be that and isn't.

(UK here, YMMV)

Hmm, I still have a bad taste from BF2142. Just constantly thinking what a great game it could be if every single person involved in developing it, publishing it, etc, had been someone else.

Actually I'd swap out a fair chunk of the players too. How can it be that so many people have sufficient intellect to operate a computer but cannot see the folly in rushing for the only raptor (or whatever the attack... flying thing... was called) and proceeding to try to cap a flag with it?

Meh, this Funnyjunk admin might be behaving very childish but it's in-line with the tone of the site. I can sympathise with this Oatmeal guy, but it's limited - he should have known better and taken a much more diplomatic approach.

Content "theft" on user-upload sites is hardly uncommon either, on Reddit for example it's normal for a cartoon to be uploaded to imgur or whatever. Granted it's less wholesale, but the principle's fundamentally the same.

TBH I think there's a good opening for a syndication service. Basically the end result would be someone could go to upload to Funnyjunk, enter either Oatmeal's url to directly upload from - or just fill out a "source" box - and then a bit of software wizardry automatically divvies up the ad revenue and takes a 10% cut. Larger sites could make individual agreements but all these smaller guys could really only do this with a standard tri-party operating agreement where everything's automated.

This isn't exactly a novel idea. Much of your news probably comes via Reuters, who buy-in a lot of their content and effectively sell it on to most news services, who either use it verbatim or as a start for their own stories.

I was reminded a little more of Borderlands than FO3, despite the "wellsprings" reference, though I think it's going to be a lot more FPS oriented than either of those.

Regarding the HUD popups "press E", I don't think too much should be read into that. They could still be using the PC icons in the console build and vice-versa. Similarly I expect the weapon wheel will be in the PC version but most folks will be using the direct selection with the number keys - why take out an option that some people (however few) might prefer? It's also helpful narrative for trailer purposes.

IIRC it's also fairly common technique for recording videos to use a controller or mouse with very low sensitivity - it's just better for camera work.

13. Re: Sound Core3D Announced May 31, 2011, 14:10 DG

My MB has a Realtek ALC888, one of the better onboard chips available at the time. Surprising how decent it is, it would certainly "make do" for most.

But it's definitely not close to my old Audigy. Just through a pair of half-decent Sennheiser's it's noticeable.

But then the lack of driver hassle is even more noticeable.

In the end I decided not to bother getting sound card last time around, tipped over by the saving allowing for a step up in the CPU. Thought I might come back to it, but the basic competency of the onboard chip combined with the lack of hw acceleration support and memories of the hassles keeps me away.
