RacingSloth, you just double click on the server.bat file and it launches the server for you? When I click on the server.bat file, it starts loading, then it performs an illegal operation. I can't even test the game on the LAN....

#30, say whatever you want, the States is far more violent than Canada. I get the Detroit evening TV news up here, and when I compare that to Ottawa (where I live) or even Toronto's, it's obvious that the States is just a more violent society.

Dam, I guess I gotta 'go fish' . I may be having heat problems then... or I guess it could be a million different things... gah!
For you two people having lockups on more than one game, it sounds like it could likely be a heat-related issue. I had heat issues about a year ago and learned quite a bit about it in my search to remedy my problem.
How many fans do you have in your computer, and where are they located? What about the heatsink on your PC? Is it a stock heatsink, or something better? You can download a free program like Motherboard Monitor (http://mbm.livewiredev.com/). That'll tell you the temperature of at least your CPU...try playing a game like UT2k4 or Far Cry for an hour or two and then check your heat readings. Anything over 55-60 Celsius for your CPU could be causing lockups. If your CPUs pretty hot, chances are your video card is too. Even a really dusty computer can lock heat in and get things pretty toasty.

Interesting, I get 'random' hard lockups with my ATI 9800 Pro card also. The current 'frame' will freeze and I get a very irrating scream from the speakers and can't reboot unless I hold the power button down for 4-5 seconds. I've also tried everything including different Driver Rev's and nothing seems to work. I get it on almost every game I play (Jedi Academy, NWN, UT2K4), do you see that also or just Far Cry?
I only had it happen on Far Cry. I am also happy to report that I fixed my problem by reinstalling Far Cry and not touching a bloody thing in the video/audio configs and just playing the game to what it defaulted on. I didn't even install the 1.1 patch. I am going to try enabling EAX 2.0 and some more graphical details and see what happens.

Yeah, I've turned off hardware sound, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, I've turned the details all to medium, I've decreased sound acceleration in dxdiag - I've tried a lot of things...still get the lockups. The screen just freezes right up and then sits there until I do a hard restart.

Far Cry would be sweet, IF I COULD PLAY FOR MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES. I get lockups after about five minutes of play. I know it ain't because my graphics card is overheating, because I have good cooling, and a temperature monitor on my video card...it never gets over 45 Celsius. I think it might be sound-related, but I have no idea...I have an Audigy2 and a Radeon 9800.

Just for the whiny sissy who said that they didn't like dropping $70 Canadian on a computer game, Far Cry is $39.99 Canadian at places like Future Shop and Best Buy (and probably EB too, but I haven't checked). So stop your cryin' and start your buyin'.

I agree with Teddy about Canadian taxes and the government. I'd rather donate 99% of my paycheck to live in Canada then donate 1% of my paycheck to live in the States. HAW HAW.

It seems pretty clear in the reviews that if you're gonna buy this game, buy it for the single-player (I will!). The multi-player is obviously not feature-rich, and is your standard FPS tacked-on multiplayer mode.
Personally I can't wait to get my hands on this game. I didn't even really know about it until I tried the PC Gamer demo, and then I realized it was pretty sweet.

John: Far Cry itself might only last a couple weeks or so (20+ hours of play apparently), but it comes packaged with complete modding tools, so the mods with the awesome engine should be incredible.
