125. Consoles are no better than PCs. Aug 26, 2004, 02:28 Smellfinger

There's enough filler on both platforms to choke even the most morbidly obese id Software and Valve fanboys. Granted, the best FPS in years is a console game, but for every Halo there are 1000 generic, bargain bin console games. It's the same with PCs. The problem is that mediocrity is tolerated by the average gamer. Think about it: Doom 3, an abysmally mediocre video game, gets rave reviews and sells ridiculously well. What kind of message does that send to developers? Make a game like Doom 3 and cash in like id Software! It happens in every genre on every platform. Is it any wonder that video games aren't evolving?

"Captivating storylines are a minority in console games for sure, but you're talking about an audience that eats up pokemon crystal to the tunes of hundreds of thousands."

Being too cool for console games must be a terrible burden. I'm sure the ladies think you're a real winner, though!

Especially when you're trying to defend something as painfully awful as Doom 3. Rock on with your bad selves!

"Jackasses like you bitched and complained when the first games started to require online serial authentication to play multiplayer. This is just another step forward."

Sit back, eat a box of Twinkies and ask yourself one question: why are you such a shill?

4. I'm surprised these reviewers can type. Aug 8, 2004, 16:32 Smellfinger

It must be difficult to felate John Carmack and write a review at the same time.

As far as the Gamespy review is concerned, I thought it was a bad review because the score was not consistent with the text of the review. You don't call a game boring and shallow and then cop out and give it an above-average score.

"It's a real shame that people are judging it for what it isn't (and what it never intended to be) instead of what it is."

It's supposed to be a compelling FPS; I didn't find it compelling. Don't try to read into people's opinions what isn't there.

"Well then, could anybody explain to me what's the "variety" and "originality" in farcry?"

They're both equally as shallow, but Far Cry stole Doom 3's technological thunder by coming out first.

I wouldn't say Doom 3 is behind the times. That's giving it too much credit since it's less compelling than the 10-year-old game it's based off of.

"JC is very proud of the game, as he should be, its a technical marvel."

But will it have the same impact it would have had if it came out before Far Cry, Deus Ex 2, Thief 3, Riddick and other games that use similar tech? I don't think so. We've already seen specular effects, bump maps, real-time shadows and lighting, etc. The technology itself isn't enough anymore.

"Can I take it back? No. Instead I get developers that shrug their shoulders and count my cash."

Hi, I'm John Carmack. I'm shielding myself from criticism by hiding behind the "you can't please everyone" excuse. Oh, and I'd like to add some mental gymnastics about about tribal behavior or something. Thanks for buying my game, sucker!

120. This is a typical id Software launch. Aug 3, 2004, 16:18 Smellfinger

Release a great 3D engine with a shallow single player game attached: Check.

Mainstream magazines give it rave reviews: Check.

id fanboys panic and shout down anyone who says that the game is shallow: Check.

But wait.

id fanboys fall back on the superior multiplayer argument: Not this time around--at least not until they make everyone pay more money for multiplayer in the undoubtedly upcoming multiplayer expansion pack.

I'll just wait patiently for the next big release and judge it as objectively as I judged Doom 3. I lose no sleep over bad video games.
