103. Re: John Carmacks Revenge.. Mar 2, 2004, 22:37 Fusion

Sorry to break it to you but both The Riva 128 and the Nvidia TNT1 were both out during the original release of unreal. They both had Opengl support. I know because my brother owned those cards, and he had hacked drivers to get unreal to run.. and it ran like shit.

Btw this post has no value =o

57. John Carmacks Revenge.. Mar 2, 2004, 03:35 Fusion

This isn't about money. Id software has enough to choose what hardware they want to endorse for their game..

This boils down to the ATI Doom3 leak and a damaged relationship between ati and id. Nvidia cards have been inferior to ATI's for the past year and a half..

I'd bet money that John Carmack has optimized Doom3's rendering engine to that of the original Unreal. Unreal was tweaked solely for 3dfx... now Doom3 is hardcore tweaked for Nvidia cards..

The worst part about the Geforce FX cards isn't their architecture.. but the noise.. It sounds like a high powered gas lawnmower.

Now.. will the NV40 dominate ATI?.. only time will tell. I myself, won't be running out to buy a Nvidia card anytime soon.. even if the performance is better than ATI in Doom3. One game doesn't mean shit.

Actually i've had my radeon 9700 pro since oct last year, and it has kicked ass ever since. I never have had any driver problems, games ran smooth as silk in top detail, and looked absolutely stunning. Even 1 year later, the 9700 pro is a top card, and i must say, the best technological investment i've made in years.

70. More Control Please Aug 23, 2003, 11:44 Fusion

I'd like to see a revolution in Fps in terms of control. It's really getting old only including jump/duck/lean/prone.. Those are all awesome mind you, but why not add more control to up the amount of skill required to become 'incredible'. I've found that everyone who plays FPS's know the best control methods, and everything has been exploited to the max. Why not add Barrel rolls, hanging from pipes/objects (ala splinter cell), trimping off of walls, diving, and combinations of everything, dive rolling. Obviously there would need to be a system in place to limit excessive usage of these moves, like a stamina bar or such, But come on, i'm really sick of picking up any FPS and knowing everything in terms of control. Give us something new dammit.

Please don't pretend that there is anything revolutionary about Doom 3 beyond the engine.

Again Xombie, you are basing your conclusion on rumors, and i have been following doom3's progress very closely, and i have not seen id make 1 statement claiming any of this...

"id has admitted that they are doing only bare-bones design tecniques for Doom 3. They're using the classic survival-horror style: poor AI, dark rooms, slow pace, etc."

If you can prove me wrong, paste me some proof, but i'm sure you're again just talking out of a hatred for Id. I am at no means defending Id, in fact, i don't defend any company. Personally... (which btw you should state in your posts before you make an opinion), i think Valve is a one-hit wonder company (+expans off the same game), and will not be able to duplicate their success with Hl2. I lost a lot of my confidence in them when they announced Tf2 for quake2, then hl, then it's own game, then finally abandonware. GG valve, the only reason i even bought Hl initially was due to promises of TF2.

83. Re: Followers!!! The lot of you! May 9, 12:52 Xombie

For years now, all that has been posted is, "Valve Sucks".

I don't remember saying anything about Valve before the announcement of HL2. I remember most people simply believing that Valve wasn't actually doing anything but feeding off the profits from HL1 and its addons/mods/etc, which it seems is exactly what Valve wanted people to think.

Oh & the hype! D3 is going to be a kick ass game. It will be different from HL2, but in ways much better.

id has admitted that they are doing only bare-bones design tecniques for Doom 3. They're using the classic survival-horror style: poor AI, dark rooms, slow pace, etc. Please don't pretend that there is anything revolutionary about Doom 3 beyond the engine.

did you ever play the original doom maps dude? there were freakin trees everywhere. I don't give a rats ass about the scientific explaination.. i was merely speculating a possible way id could do it without actually doing the research. And if Mars was Terraformed, they would need to cut down trees, as they would grow normally as they do on Earth.

PLAY THE ORIGINAL DOOM. There is obviously an atmosphere, trees, grass and such, if you don't know that, you're not a doomer. I realize it has never been explained why by Id, but hopefully they'll realize this in Doom3.

Umm, Doom1 and Doom2 both had trees. Did it ever occur to you,Trees could be used as an oxygen supply. Or even the entire atmosphere on mars has changed due to the advances in technology supporting life?

"No. Only young forests act as carbon sponges. Trees eventually become old growth, which don't. If they were going to terraform, they would more likely be planting grass or moss. So if you're going to use that argument, there should be a weedwacker instead of a chainsaw. And I think we can both agree that would be just as silly.
And no, since trees are not indiginous to mars, they would not just start growing there. Just like lawn grass never grew in America until it was brought over."

Please, people like weapons that feel real to them. The shotgun, supershotgun, chaingun, pistol would all be outdated in the future by lazer/plasma/fusion weapons. But would it really be that fun to go around only shooting lasers in Doom?.. I don't think so.

It's pretty sad that they have all these fixes and they don't just release another patch. There's a lot of people who have no clue how to edit the system registry and what not.. i find it pretty ridiculous.. that been said.. no one who paid good money for this game should be required to do anything more than download a patch off the internet. They obviously released this patch too soon... I'll be making these changes, but still, it's a pain in the ass.. and more so for people who are not informed on how to edit the registry. blah

For all those people complaining about lag/choppiness i have a suggestion for you. Turn off lightmaps from the video options menu. The game will run at least 30% faster, if it's only a matter of video lag.

#37 are you comparing the singleplayer game with the multiplayer demo?.. Because if so, there's a huge difference in performance.. Multiplayer maps tend to be a lot less detailed and a lot simpler than singleplayer maps. I noticed there was a massive system hit on the singleplayer demo and nearly none in the multiplayer.. Anywho, i got my copy.. installing/downloading patch now. i'll upgrade my damn system for this game if needed.
