2. Re: Joke of a game Sep 22, 2005, 13:31 Geese

Offending for the sake of realism is still offending. It's not 'needed' in a Sim any more than it's needed in this arcade game. And apparently the ESRB doesn't find it offensive dialogue, as they rated the game "T" and not mature.

And for that matter...shooting bullets into a plane and exploding the human inside it into a ball of fire is perfectly acceptable, but calling them a "Jap" is offensive?

I didn't find anything offensive about this game based on the context it's presented in.

Ahhh myst. I played the original, Riven, Exile, and Revelation all without any online hints or outside assitance.

Wow! You solved the entire Spider Chair puzzle on Spire without any clues? Man...I felt like you had to be Sherlock Holmes to figure that one out. I was so bummed I didn't figure that one out because it was such an intricate puzzle. It really was the beautiful work of a mad genius (Sirrus). Congrats!

The demo will be made available to the public at 10:00 AM EDT, and not a minute sooner

But maybe 26 minutes sooner.

There is more to add but the point is that many people enjoy joining a LAN or IP game with their friends to play within a story line and achieve a goal together.

I heartily agree. I recommend Doom3 Opencoop mod as well. They did a really nice job with this.

Yea Quake was great. I dont suppose there are some updated models and textures for Quake are there? \

While not new textures or models, the Tenebrae project adds per pixel lighting to the quake engine. It's quite impressive looking (considering it's Quake 1)

I wonder why they dont have screenshots

Gamespot has had screenshots for almost 3 months now.

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/rpg/xmenlegendsiiriseofapocalypse/screenindex.html

and just release this on us like they did

Interesting...Gamestop and EBgames had the game listed as being released tomorrow for a couple of months now. I knew about it and pre-ordered it.

feast your eyes on cutting edge

Graphics don't have to be cutting edge to be interesting.

these graphics look like Sega Master system stuff

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you weren't even old enough to buy your own SMS when it was new.

BTW, we get it...you don't like Marvel or this game.

My wife and I enjoyed the first one a lot. Even multiplayer was pretty fun. My biggest complaint was the game-crashing bugs that were never worked out. Seeing B&W2 demo crash during an E3 interview wasn't too heartwarming.

But, I *am* looking forward to it.

In the demo you pick many different paths, I think I went through 3 distinct endings.

Three? I gotta get my demo back out! I got arrested, and got away in the cab. What was the third ending? (this is a really short demo, so I don't think spoiler rules apply here)

Modern graphics effects
Ok great, it has light bloom.

3 different opposing races
Which means 3 identical races, with different models.

About 30 creatures with unique animations
7 is about 30, right?

Upgradeable characteristics of protagonist and his weapons
Whee! My sword is blue now instead of red.

Partially nonlinear level structure leads to 3 different endings (+ 1 hidden)
This means in the last room you can kill on of 3 differnt creatures...or that 4th one hidden under the table.

Thoroughly developed storyline, supported by a large number of cut scenes
Supported by a lot of boring inactivity.

Game logo and web site are yet under development
'Nuff said

I've been using DOSbox lately, and it runs great

http://dosbox.cjb.net/

It emulates all the old school soundcards like Roland and Ad-lib, and emulates CDdrives as well as all the extended/expanded memory thingys of the DOS era.

but every so often it's just fun to play a game that requires no major thought or intelligence to play.

Agreed...but that can be done on both PC and console. Mindless games are rife on BOTH platforms. While it's safe to say there are more thought provoking games on PC, I think it's ridiculous to think there are none at all on consoles.

5: Publishers rush games out the door on PC and console, so that is an invalid point. The valid point however is that us PC gamers want a certain level of quality in a finished game. Console users just dont care. If it engages the "action" part of the brain they're happy.

Console gamers aren't complaining day and night about bugs because there SIMPLY ARENT AS MANY buggy console games. And that's just because devs have one set of hardware to create and test for.

...i am more looking forward to the Xbox 360 and the games coming out for that...

Why would you smash console gamers in the face and then admit that you are looking forward to X360? (as a multi-platform gamer I just get offended when one side blasts another with blanket statements that aren't even true)

Because it'd be nice to say to your friends "Hey look at how damn good this game looks". Who wants to play Oblivion on minimal graphics settings if you cant see the forests in all their glory? I wouldn't.

I guess that part is subjective. I will probably get Oblivion for 360 over my pc (which is a decent gaming rig). While you can definitely say that the PC puts out a higher crisper picture, I can argue that watching the same scene 6 feet from my widescreen HDTV sitting on my comfortable couch is just as *enjoyable*.

Anyways, I agree with most of your comments why PC gaming is dying out...mostly because consoles are getting closer and closer to the quality of PCs.

will the police have sting operations like they do with alcohol? -
pay some 15-yr-old to go in and buy an AO game, then rush in and arrest the cashier? Tonite on America's Most Wanted.

Or worse...I'm waiting for the first parent to go to jail because they let the neighbor's kid play GTA with their kid.

Publishers can risk releasing their game to the PC market and face possible losses to pirates, or they can release to the larger console market where piracy is limited to a few thousand people that mod their consoles.

Publishers who choose to release to the console market aren't doing so because they fear loss of sales to pirates. They are doing so because of like you said the 'larger console market'.

Or that I worked for the Department of Defense before that

Me too. Guess who else works for the DoD. Sanitation workers, accountants, cafeteria attendants, lawyers, security guards...the list goes on. Don't kid yourself. Plenty of us have "prestigious" (lol) jobs like you, we just don't go spouting them like they mean anything.

Yes, I am having Fun with this because you guys are a bunch of freaking foul mouthed yahoo's who post mostly one crap post after the next in thread after thread here. Then you treat people who actually *do* know what the hell they are talking about with loads of disrespect because you guys live in your own little bubble universe where you think your kings.

Holy crap. Someone has a perfectly legitimate explanation for why they dislike starforce, and you, in your first post label the guy as being a pirate based on the fact that his reasoning for why he was losing CPU cycles differed from yours.

Okay let me explain it again this time more succinctly. Demo with starforce >>>> retail with starforce that is extremely hard to crack. Demo without starforce >>>>> retail with starforce that is easy to crack. That's why they put in starforce in demos.

I got it. I understood *what* you were saying. I didn't understand *why* your explanation made sense. However, Optimaximal explained it quite well.

How do I know all this? I was one of the instigators of the witchhunt against StarForce on the Codemasters Soldiers forum which resulted in one of the lead developers from StarForce themselves coming forward and explaining it all

Thanks, I appreciate the SF explanation. That actually made sense.

Before you start arguing with me consider that I am Microsoft System Engineer, and Cisco engineer.

Be honest. You steal software and this gets in your way so you cry about it.

Be honest. You troll elementary schools looking for little lost boys.

Get real. Whether or not his claims about resource usage are valid, you can't just assume that his motives for hating starforce are criminal related.

Read Overon's post.

I did, and it still doesn't really make sense. How does starforce protect the files? I thought most any copy protection was to verify that a store-bought CD was in the tray. Far as I know people can still hack into the .exe all day long whether or not SF is there or not. I don't see how SF keeps hackers out of the code.

Basically, it's one huge rant about nothing these days

I wouldn't call it exactly nothing. Some of us have had non-warez issues in the past with Starforce...lockups-etc. While it's quite possible those are fixed now, lots of us still have a bad taste over it, and squirm when we see the starforce logo come up. I still worry that my other games will lock up for some reason over having SF installed. Maybe it's baseless today, but the thought is still there. There's something weird about having copy protection in a demo anyways. Call me paranoid.

Glad to hear that problems with Starforce have been ironed out.
