News Comments > DOOM 3 Patch
67. Re: No subject Sep 29, 2004, 08:51 Geese

Space Captain...I think I was the first poster who responded to your original message in this thread. Specifically to the part of your message that read

this game was forgotten in less than 3 weeks

I still think its odd that you can even logically make that statement. Ok...perhaps I'm reading it too literally. I see now that you meant that the 'popularity' of the game waned in 3 weeks. Ok...can't necessarily disagree with you there. However, one has to wonder if your motivation is to improve the game, or simply bash it. Negative criticism in hopes to improve the game is welcome, but how is continual bashing for what seems to be just for the sake of bashing, helpful? Someone else posted that they had never read Space Captains comments before...ok, fair enough. But the whole purpose of this thread was to discuss a bug patch for Doom3. Space Captain obviously isn't playing the game anymore, and probably won't no matter how many bug patches come out. So why show up in a patch thread and bash the game based on 2 month old information? Doesn't seem very helpful. Again, I don't question his right to say what he wants. I only question the value of seemingly hatred (of the game) driven comments.

this game was forgotten in less than 3 weeks..

and yet you are still talking about it nearly two months later.

Here's a thought. If you bashed the game 2 months ago because you hated it...more power to ya. But why do you feel the need to CONTINUE to bash it? Some of us actually like the game. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying "dont say anything if you have nothing nice to say" .... I'm definitely not saying that. But I just don't understand the need to keep on and on with the negative stuff about a game that supposedly was "forgotton in less than 3 weeks". Is the mere existence of this game actually causing you pain and sorrow somehow? I pity you if it is.

fly in, land..capture and fly off

Also want to add that I think they made a good decision to REQUIRE you to exit a vehicle to take a command point. You can't just march up in an AT-AT and sit on the flag, you actually have to put your fragile head in danger to capture in this game. - There's no question that this isn't the be-all-end-all of FPS/vehicle games...but it also isn't utter crap (in my opinion). It does a great job of immersing you in the SW universe. Do I like BFV better overall? ... probably... but I'm enjoying SW:B a lot too

now this is just a decent console port, I mean you cant even choose how many bots you want to play with or how hard they going to be wtf?

I can't speak for the PC version, but in the Xbox version you CAN specify how many bots are in the game as well as their difficulty level. Not to the extent of UT2Kx customization of indiviual bots, but yes, you can control the total # and their overall difficulty.

"So what happens if you run out of space on it for any reason?"

If you run out of space, then you need to erase some things to free it up, just like any hard drive on PC. However, I seriously doubt anyone will fill up their drive with game saves and patches though. The most likely reason for the drive filling up is massive amounts of ripped music. I have plenty of downloaded content as well as around 3 hours of ripped music, and I'm no where near filling up my drive.

The Co-op isn't just a set of side missions. It's a full campaign that 2 people can play together over Xbox Live or PC/PS2 internet. The fact that they decided to include the adversarial MP is icing on the cake now.

5. you have got to be kidding Sep 24, 2004, 10:30 Geese

I had to read this post 3 times before I realized that they were serious about voodoo 3. I feel for folks with lesser systems...but Voodoo 3? Come on. There's a point where you have to cut some folks out in order to make the game awesome for mid-range to high range systems, as opposed to making the game mediocre for everyone. I'm already upset enought that the "mutilplayer" mode of HL2 will be Counterstrike, as opposed to vanilla DM. Great work valve. Cater to the masses that probably pirated HL in the first place to play CS. (yes, I know its a broad-sweeping, ignorant jab as CS players...but I don't really care. Flame me all you want)

3. too many MXs Sep 22, 2004, 08:27 Geese

I think the saddest thing about the survey so far...is that the majority of folks seem to have Geforce 4 MX cards...ugh. I'm a big Nvidia fan...but I seriously think that the 4-MX is a line that never should have been made. Or at least not call it a "4".

21. Re: regarding steam.. Sep 20, 2004, 12:15 Geese

1. Not having control of what goes on - not seeing exactly what STEAM is doing to your files makes some users uneasy.
- but lets face it...running an exe patch file doesnt exactly tell you what files are being updated either

a. Being able to patch your game at your own leisure is sometimes necessary if there are side effects of the patch (losing save games for one).

- you can set games in steam to not auto update, and then force them to update when you want them to

b. Theoretically it may be possible to not only download files, but also upload files.. using your PC and bandwidth as a file server.
- and if they did this without our knowledge, that would be illegal

Imagine not being able to play your favorite single player FPS because of this.
- You can set steam to offline mode. when in this mode a connection is not necesary. LAN games can be played and SP can be played without an internet connection, once it is placed in offline mode.

c. LAN games - will they happen with HL2?
- they happen with every other STEAM game, so I don't see why not with HL2

Amazing...it took merely 7 posts to change this thread from Sacred Expansion to something Doom 3 related.

LOL

Looking forward to Sacred Expansion. Apart from its shoddy LAN support/stability, I really enjoy Sacred.

36. Re: No subject Aug 9, 2004, 08:44 Geese

"Eah, still haven't purchased the game yet."

Check.

" These are welcome mods, screw how Id wanted you to play the game, it's retarted. "

Interesting comment coming from someone who hasn't even played the game yet. I can understand those who played and determined they didn't like the feel of it...but to slam the game before even playing it? I also felt that the flashlight /gun thing was going to be a little clunky before I played it...then I *did* play it, and I happen to love it.

"Half Life 2 can't come out soon enough. I need a game with substance and technology."

Let's not forget that HL2 has been in development for a whole 2 years longer than Doom 3. And *its* still not out yet. I find it interesting how you can simultaneously slam one game and praise another without having played either of them. - Just my lame observation.

I happen to love what they did with Doom 3, and I'm also looking forward to what other game dev companies can do with the engine, by developing it further...

Happy gaming!

135. Only 1 model bleeds in MP? Aug 7, 2004, 16:02 Geese

Ok...off topic here...but anyone notice that the default model in MP is the only one that bleeds? We tested it out today with 3 pcs on LAN. The blue, red, yellow, etc models do not bleed when shot. Only the default (brown I think) model bleeds. Anyone else experiencing this?

(Yes, we are running with legal bought versions of the game without any cracks or patches whatsoever)

"Instead of making people choose between the flashlight or a gun as a way of adding tension what if id had made the flashlight crappy/unreliable? "

Hey, I agree with you. However, all the people that complained that not being able to tape a flashlight to a gun was "unrealistic", would now probably complain that there's no way a flashlight in the future would be unreliable.

I like your idea, but I don't think it's gonna satisfy the group that wants the beam on all the time.

I'd have to say its similar, but leans to the side of 'not as good'. For everything that I was able to shoot, push, etc...it seemed, well, 'good enough'. I definitely wouldn't say their proprietary physics engine is as good as Havok's dedicated engine. It gets the job done, however.

"not only would it be unscary, but the framerates would drop to zero,"

Gotta disagree here. I haven't even finished the game, but I've seen PLENTY of rooms that did not require the flashlight to see, and the framerate didn't drop at all.

I think it's pretty obvious the flashlight mechanic was done solely for theme, not for lack of rendering power. Come on...at the expense of sounding like an iD fanboy...does anyone seriously think that the D3 engine is a piece of crap? Sure, it requires a lot of horsepower to run it...but saying that they went with the flashlight thing to save frames is stretching it a bit.

"If this game had been released by a less respected company than iD folks would be ripping it a new one."

Isn't that what you're doing right now?

"I don't want to play it as intended I want to play it so I can see it. It's my $50."

Fair enough. Thank goodness for the quick mod availability.

"iD dropped the ball on this one. "

Have to disagree with you on that one. Now, if they made modding the game impossible...then THAT might be dropping the ball. But delivering a game that they (as well as quite a lot of us) enjoy, isn't dropping the ball, in my opinion.

3. It was bound to happen Aug 6, 2004, 10:15 Geese

I'm actually surprised it took a whole 4 days for someone to come out with this I personally like playing the game as intended, having to switch between light and weapon...but perhaps this will allow others to enjoy the game as well. - My thematic justification for 'not' having a flashlight taped to a weapon is simply that the hero doesn't have time to look for tape and attach a flashlight to each weapon he has once the action starts. Lame...perhaps..but it works for me!

"Again, it's wrong, but if you don't understand the difference then we're going to continue to get really shitty laws like DMCA, proposed laws like INDUCE, and insane sentences where someone convicted of pirating a bunch of songs or games winds up behind bars for longer than a rapist. Who do you think is really a bigger threat to society?"

When this discussion started out, and when I joined it, we were at the point where we were simply debating if downloading the game without paying for it was WRONG. Guess I made the mistake of using the term "stealing". What bothers me is when all these 'its not stealing...yes it is..no it isnt..its copyright infringement" gets started...all the pirates jump in with the "yeah right...I'm not stealing" and go with that. It sucks that to get a point across here you have to speak in freaking Latin lawyer terms and have a PhD in whatever the F you guys went to school for while I didn't.

That aside, I never said I supported the RIAA/MPAA, whatever. And I definitely don't support death senences or life terms for small-time pirates while rapists walk out of jail sooner.

Oh F this...this is ridiculous.

Whatever....I'm an idiot for thinking that downloading the game is stealing. Go figure. Society is doomed because of my morally correct, yet technically wrong view of what stealing is and isnt.

Have fun trashing me and bitching what a bunch of jerks iD is for not releasing a demo.

Forums suck and are the coolest thing at the same time.

I'm done rambling.

I hate people.

Have a good day.

God bless.
