129. Re: Pres is military Nov 23, 2004, 08:27 Geese

I think people are forgetting that the President dresses like a civilian, but the bulk of his activities are something that a military commander does. The guy should be wearing a full military uniform, if he wanted to be honest.

While one would have a REALLY good argument that our current POTUS has primarily focused on military activities, I don't think that can be said about the POTUS in general. You seriously think that the bulk of Clinton's activities were military? Sure, it's a funny jab to say the POTUS should be wearing a military uniform, but it's something I vehemently disagree with. Saying he (any POTUS) is dishonest because he doesn't wear a uniform is seems to be hinting that a lot of people don't actually know that he's the Commander-In-Chief of the military.

'm pretty sure it was stated before that the maps/models would not be redone for HL:S, one reason many of us were not too excited about paying extra for it.

Oh well. I actually never picked up on the HL1 port info. At least HL2 runs fine

183. HL1 Source Nov 16, 2004, 16:29 Geese

Ok - so I finally got HL1 source loaded up. It looks almost IDENTICAL to the original HL. Same textures, same models, as far as I could tell, the only upgrade to it, is that the water in the game looks like HL2 water.

Kind of a letdown...I was hoping it was going to be fully remapped and remodeled in Source engine.

Oh well...at least HL2 looks and plays awesome!

I hope HL1 source isnt an indicator of what DoD source will be.

My question is this, do I have to connect to Steam every time I want to run it?

Acccording to Valve, no. Steam will check if there is a connection each time you start it, but if there is not one, it will allow you to play in "offline" mode.

This is so relevant to Half Life 2. How about writing a book, so your long winded, POINTLESS and off topic rant could surely be appreciated by more people than Blues News readers.

And flaming is *on* topic? (note - irony alert...yes, I intend to do a flame myself in a minute) While the comment on Halo 2 might not be directly related to the thread title, it absolutely fell in place with a digression that was discussing comparisons of HL2 and Halo2.

Just my opinion, but I fail to see how his one post out of 120+ ruined your thread-reading experience. BTW - nice use of quoting his ENTIRE post.

Sure, you have 4 player splitscreen, but the maps are too huge for 1 on 1, 2 on 1 or 2 on 2. It's mostly pointless to try.

I know it's only one map, but Midship is quite adequate for 1 vs 1.

And sure, you can play online with 4 people, but it isn't too much fun to be gunned down by people you don't see because you have a quarter of a screen and they have a full one.

Agreed

The lack of bots is such an enormous letdown I don't know where to begin

I wouldn't so much call it 'enormous' (for me) - but yes, bots would be appreciated - but then again, not every PC FPS has bots either...

Live is meaningless to me. I'm not a fan of using the gamepad over the mouse and keyboard

You know, I used to be the same way. I was a hardcore PC FPS only / mouse-kb user. I will never argue that the gamepad is superior to the kb/m combo....but in the past 2 years I have managed to adapt to using the gamepad, and achieved a level that I feel quite comfortable with. I definitely don't like it OVER the kb/m, but I also dont mind using it either. It was an acquired taste, however. I forced myself to play and finish Halo 1 and a few other console FPS to get the hang of it. Now I'm glad I did, because I know I enjoy Halo 2 a LOT more because of it.

I honetly cannot fathom how anyone could objectively play both games and say that they prefer Halo 2. I don't even think they're in the same league, and I say this as someone who was looking forward to both games equally.

Let me start by saying that I have yet to play Half Life 2 (will do when I get home tonight) - but from my perspective, they are two totally different games. There is no doubt in my mind that I will love HL2 single player over Halo 2, but I'm also completely in love with Halo 2 multiplayer on Xbox live. (yes, it's possible to both love PC & Console games). Being able to party up with my friends and seamlessly use voice chat, all while lounging on my couch is awesome. It's just a different experience. Not necessarily better...just different, but easily as entertaining.

I think his point is that you were MADE to want it BECAUSE you are corporate-whipped. I don't think that's such a baseless argument personally, I think it's fairly interesting and is not really flaming/trolling.

I like how you conveniently left out the part where I responed to "how do you like being Valve's bitch?"

And anyways, how the F do you know I was MADE to want this game? Guess it has nothing to do with playing the original and liking it, huh? Have you never seen a movie the day it was released? Do you watch TV every day? Guess you are corporate whipped by that too, and your PC, and your refrigerator as well. I like how this donkey claims to be non-corporate whipped because they are going to play the game down the road a bit instead of today. F-that! If they are so non-corporate whipped, then how bout not playing the game AT ALL?

thats fucking hilarious, everyone having a hissy fit about NOT being able to play it right away when the retailers broke it, now doing a total flip flop and advocating that you must be patient for the unlock.

That's funny...I never complained about not being able to play it yesterday. And I didn't have any issue "unlocking" it. Yes, it took about 5 minutes, but I would assume thats akin to unzipping a 2GB file...some people's harddrives are just faster than others.

you guys are totally corporate-whipped

I guess I don't see how pre-ordering a game and then playing it is being corporate whipped.

I'm sure to play HL2 down the road, but I'll buy it when I say so

And I bought it when *I* wanted to. When I get home from work today, I'll play it...which is when *I* want to. I don't even see your point, other than to simply harrass.

what's it like being valve's bitch?

I don't know...what's it like never having kissed a girl? I'm going to assume since you spend your extra time trolling instead of asking for or giving useful information, that you don't actually have a woman (or man) to go home to.

And why is everyone in such a fervor over HL:Source? Playing through that game a second time was more than enough for me. I just don't get it.

I don't know. *Is* everyone in a fervor over it? I asked the question because I didn't see anyone else talking about it and was interested. And as far as playing it, I haven't played HL1 since I finished it when it originally came out (so I haven't even played it twice). My wife, on the other hand, has never played HL1, so I figured this would be a good way for her to experience it.

HL1 Source moved from "coming soon" to "now playing". I had it downloading as I left for work this morning. Anyone played it yet? Is it a faithful representation of the original, or does it look like a hack-job using the source engine? Anyone...anyone?

There is nothing you can take away from his show and say, hay, that was a great show, I am glad I listened in.

What a joke. If no one is glad they listened, then how does he have 18 million listeners? This is stupid. Shame on me. I fed the troll.

Any moron can but naked girls on his show and talk about how hot their ass and tits are.

But not all of them can make it funny. (although I think Opie and Anthony do a much better job...just my opinion) - I would wager that most people aren't tuning into Stern's show to whack their bag while he talks to strippers. It's funny, not necessarily sexy. It's a damn comedy show!

But as far as what he has done for radio?

WTF cares? Why can't he just put on a show that people enjoy listening to? And don't give me the crap about kids being able to listen to it. That's just called bad parenting. You have done nothing for this forum, yet you are still allowed to post.

I understand that some of you like Stern, what a pity, there are better things to do with your time than listen to him.

Like trolling the forums and telling people who like anything different than you that you pity them, and calling them uneducated.

If you park your car on a city street overnight,
and you leave the keys in the ignition,
whose fault is it when the car gets stolen?

Yours and the person who stole it. The keys being in the ignition doesn't somehow make the theft legal.

MS is definitely high on the blame list for possible shoddy security, but please don't act like the thieves are blameless.

18. just maybe Oct 12, 2004, 09:29 Geese

What would be the fun in developing only ONE vapor-ware game at a time? I'm sure they are hard at work at simultaneously developing Prey. - Little known trivia about the Prey engine: originally conceived in the Quake 1 engine, 3DR continually changed engines as more an more technology became available. Some of the engines have included the likes of Battlezone 2, Sims Makin Magic, and Chessmaster 8. In an ironic twist, it seems that DNF is now being developed on the Prey engine.

I cant seem to get the internal server browser to work.It wont show ANY servers for CS:Source. However, the external steam server browser does seem to work. Played on a 64 player level of CS, and remember why I hate it. Sucks to get killed 20 seconds in, and sit out for the next 3 minutes. - Definitely looking more forward to Day of Defeat: Source

"If you're not able to purchase it on release day because of heavy traffic, you probably won't be able to play even if you've already paid for it . "

But that's why you can pre-load the game right now. I already have the game pre-loaded on my system (and it didn't cost anything). You do NOT have to pre-order the game to pre-LOAD it. You only need a valid steam ID (which is free). Then you can pre-order (or even wait and just purchase it online the day of release and then the pre-load will be unlocked.

99. Re: Why I won't do steam... Oct 7, 2004, 07:59 Geese

Two reasons. Reason 1, my computer dies, gets stolen, etc. and I'm left dealing with Valve about how to get my game back. Have you ever dealt with Valve because of a Steam issue? It's a pain in the ass!

Not sure what you are referring to. If you lose your entire computer, its as simple as re-downloading the Steam client and then logging back into steam on your new computer. Steam knows what games you "own" based on your ID, not on what is downloaded to your local PC. Yes, you might have to wait a while for the games to download, but its extremely easy to get that all set back up. And you can even burn the .GCF files to a CD/DVD and have those available also to make the restoral process faster.

Steam may be a pain in the ass for some things (like when it's down for service) but "losing" your game is not one of them.

Your other comments are valid for things like not being able to "sell" the game...but then that applies to any type of software you purchase online, like Norton, etc. While many may not agree with purchasing online with no physical CD, it certainly is not new concept.

I just read about the Nero/Alcohol/etc issues this game has.

I'm also not familiar with these issues. I have Alcohol running a (legitimate) image of the Sims2 DVD and have no issue with it.

I agree that the amount of "expansions" that come out for the Sims franchise is a little overboard. Lots of those should probably have been released as freebies.

I agree that the optimization of this game isn't up to par yet. Had to drop to 1024x768 to get a decent feel to it - and this is on a P4 3.2ghz - 6800GT. Most everything else I can run at 1280x1040 with all bells and whistles on. Could be something decent here, but not too impressed as of yet. Looks and feels almost identical to the Xbox demo.
